The goal of No Mother, No Child is to tell the stories of the natural mothers of Colombia whose children have been adopted internationally.

I aim to make these women visible through mixed visual media and pop up exhibitions at locations where the adoptees and their families live now starting in June with Cologne.

Through No Mother, No Child, anonymous women with fictional stories will become real and present persons.

The papers and documents of Adoptees are classified but can be hidden, falsified or lost, and only with a lot of emotional and financial effort is it possible for Adoptees to reunite with their mothers, yet most will never have the chance to do so.

"My natural mother became a fictional character I only knew from my fantasy, fragmented memory and incomplete documents written in a foreign language.“

The stories of mothers subjected to loss through adoption aren’t told from the first-hand perspective very often. The distance to the country of origin, the language barrier and the circumstances of the adoptions make it easy to overlook the perspective, experiences, and reasons of those mothers.

My photographic work and a pop up exhibition will reduce the distance between the natural mothers on one side and the adoptees and adoptive families on the other side.

_

The project begins in November 2017 in Medellín, Colombia. From there I will make contact with 20 birth mothers who have forfeited their children to adoption.

My main focus lies on women between the age of 40 and 60, who already lived a life without their children. I hope to be welcomed and befriended by these women, to learn and understand why the adoption took place and how they are living nowyears later.

A portrait exhibition of the natural mothers will make them accessible again. Present in the reality of the adoptees and their adoptive families.

These women are more than a footnote about the beginning of the Colombian adoptees' life. These women are real humans with their own individual stories

Those stories are worth to be seen, because those mothers are the only reasons and the beginning of our stories of adoption:

No Mother, No Child.

_

Your support will help me fund travel, foreign language interpretation and high resolution equipment to work with, so I can create large-format prints for the exhibition.

To further create their presence through this project I need to create large-format prints of the photographs. Therefore, parts of the fundraiser will be invested into a high resolution digital camera and lenses to accurately and faithfully depict these amazing women.

(3.000€)

The aim to meet up and work with 20 natural mothers can only be reached with your support.

Even though traveling through Colombia is cheaper than traveling in Europe, I will still need to cover some costs because I would like to visit those mothers in their homes, in Colombia. With the use of couch surfing I can lower these costs.

(600€)

To create results worthy of the topic, I will work on that project full-time in

Therefore, parts of the fundraiser will be used for my subsistence in Colombia.

(1.400€)

To get in contact with 20 mothers of adoption loss will be a great challenge, but there are wonderful contact people who offered help.

First of all Marcia Engel, the founder of Plan Angel. She is in contact with hundreds of natural families in Colombia, who are searching for their lost children. Thanks to Abby Forero-Hilty and DecodingOrigins.com I can provide some free DNA-Tests to the mothers I visit if they are still searching for their children. This is how we can help reunite families.

From this point on I need your support. Make your donation and choose from the different rewards I prepared especially for you.

The platform is easy to use and there are a lot of different possibilities to make a contribution. Lastschrift is open for anyone donating from Germany. To use that possibility you need to register on kickstarter and say on your profile you are from Germany. For any further donation on Kickstarter Lastschirft will be possible for you.

Please share this project on your social media platforms and talk, talk, talk about it! #NoMotherNoChild

It doesn’t matter whether on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, via e-mail, by phone or in person! Talk to your friends, tell them about the project and help me to get enough support to reach the needed funding. Help me to tell the stories of these amazing women and their struggles of adoption.

Since I was adopted myself in the 90s from Colombia, most of my work over the last years has been about international and interracial adoption.

Risks and challenges

I have studied the issue of international adoption deeply, theoretically and emotionally. I made a plan. I found the right contact persons to work with. Bought the tickets. I am ready to accomplish.
