Project update XV: Mass Production!
Your messages have been very considerate and have helped us develop the type of updates that are critical to you. You have helped us grow as a company overall. It is such a daunting but rewarding experience to be transparent; we feel as if you all have been the fourth co-founder in our company pushing and cheering us on.
We have been knee deep in mass production. This is the final step in manufacturing before we ship and is one that has required every ounce of our mental and physical energy. It feels like we just finished a marathon and are now being rewarded with a triathlon. To keep you up to date we are updating our FB page multiple times a week in order to show our production process. In this update we will go in depth.
A critical point in mass production is communication. We have trained line engineers who in turn train line workers. It has been important for us to work side-by-side with our line especially at this final stage since this will be the first time Nomikus have been mass produced on planet earth and the people who know how to put it together best is us. At the beginning of mass production we were not satisfied with some conditions (lighting, cleanliness, etc) on our line and spent the effort to move quickly to a better site. This has produced happier workers and a better yield.
Currently we have made our first 300 shippable 120V Nomikus and this number will only increase faster as workers get more familiar with the process. As soon as we have 500 Nomikus pass AQL (Acceptance Quality Limits) we will make our first shipment to you, our Kickstarter backers. You will get an email from us when we are shipping your Nom. We will continue to ship after that in batches of 1,000. Our line will run continuously and we will ship Nomikus in the order that you backed. Because it is so early in production, we cannot give a firm shipping date at the moment, but shipping is imminent and you will be the first to know when we ship.
Mechanically we have successful fixtures that take a lot of the guesswork out of how to put together a Nomiku for workers that have never put one together before. Throughout the process we have learned from watching them on what makes their jobs more efficient and adjust our fixtures accordingly.
As with every build we have ever had, whether it was EVT (Engineering Verification Testing), DVT (Design Verification Testing), or PVT (Production Verification Testing) there comes a testing process. What is unique to mass production is we take an AQL. This process allows us to not accept any critical defects (totally unacceptable: a user might get harmed, or regulations are not respected), weed out major defects (these products would usually not be considered acceptable by the end user), and keep minor defects (minor departure from specifications) to a minimum.
