Project Update XI: Submitted to UL, onwards to builds!

Dear Backers,


We hope spring has at last sprung near you. Here in China, we’ve sprung into our updated the design to banish steam forever, built and tested three perfect units, and submitted those units to the UL testing agency. Having focused on this issue non-stop since January, we are relieved the process is complete and brings Nomiku one BIG step closer to your kitchens.

The next step is to power ahead with assembling larger batches. We’ll be producing 60 units next week to finish everything needed for our own testing. Then, we’ll do some final tooling modification and finish the fixtures to do a pilot run in late May. That should set us up for production after UL finishes testing in early June and we will have an accurate timeline of when you can get your hands on Nomiku. 


We greatly appreciate your patience – it has been a much longer journey than we expected and we are sorry for that. We’re pushing our schedule everywhere to get Nomiku to you just as soon as we can after the testing finishes and then will update you with delivery dates. But know we will never push so hard that we'd break our promise to you to deliver a beautifully designed, top quality product that will last.


For our Canadian backers, we now expect that you’ll receive your units at the same time as US backers. European and other international backers, we will have updates soon about when we will be able to ship your units out, probably a month after the US units ship.

      I backed Nomiku for two reasons: 1) I wanted to bring sous vide to a broad audience; 2) I find the process of manufacturing physical items interesting (I work in software). Thank you for sharing #2 with us as we go along, and I can't wait to show off my beautiful Nomiku soon. I'd rather it be 9 months late and last 10 years than on time and break in 1.

      A lot of high profile delayed Kickstarters (such as Pebble and OUYA) could learn a lot about open and transparent communication from you guys. While no one wants delays, especially ones > 6 months, it is very good to see both *why* the delays are happening and quick communication once you determine there will be a delay.

      Also good to know that us Canucks will get our Nomikus without additional delays.

      Hey guys,

      Keep up the good work. Unlike a product in the high-tech world, I don't anticipate the nomiku becoming obsolete in the near or distant future, so I'd rather you make a great product that you're proud of than necessarily meeting a certain timeline. Manufacturing a product like this takes time and is bound to hit bumps in the road, but keep up the good work and make a product to last a lifetime!

      Are you saying that in June units will start shipping? Or that in June you will know more about when units will start shipping?

      I remember, in June last year, that you were predicting to ship units in December 2012. This project got way, way, off the rails.
