Hi, we are Alessandra and Coty, the co-founders of Nomadnoos a luxurious yarn brand with a mission.
With our brand we propose beautiful soft yarns and we create awareness and change the approach to fashion, which considers the processes and resources required to make clothing, particularly focusing on sustainability.
Both coming from different directions, our path crossed in the Swiss mountains, and brought us to Mongolia and Nepal.
By creating the Nomadnoos brand, we want to show that it is possible to deliver a beautiful yarn which add value to your own hand knitting or crochet project. Nomadnoos creates value while proposing hand spun sustainably sourced yarns while following the Slow Fashion principles. We integrate transparency and produce yarns that will last and values the fair treatment of people, animals, and our planet.
When you are selecting your knitting project and start to cast on, you also take your time right? Our yarns are made in the same way. We follow the seasons and source with respect for the environment and the animals. We only use animals which are not degrading the environment and we work only with nomads who respect their rangeland.
Yak and camels are losing their warm winter hair in spring and that is the time our nomadic herders in Mongolia are starting to comb their animals.
For our High Mountain Yak yarn, we work with nomads from the Khangay and Arkhangay area. It is a province 4 hours driving from Ulaan Bator, the capital of Mongolia.
Our Dry desert Camel yarn comes from the Gobi desert. From the capital, it takes at least 8 hours drive, much in the desert, where it is easy to get lost!
Our Smooth Sartuul Sheep yarn, comes from the Sartuul sheep, which is a special Mongolian breed with an extremely soft undercoat and a cashmere touch, comes from the province of Zavhkan.
After combing and selecting the best fibers they are brought to a factory in Ulaan Bator where they are washed and carded. Also here sustainability is integrated, the factory we work with recycles all his water and uses only environmental friendly soaps.
The washed and carded fibers are shipped to Nepal where they are transformed in beautiful yarns by qualified spinners, spinning besides their household tasks. A spinner can spin 3 kg per month, which is approximatively 12 days of spinning. The salary we pay them is fair to pay and equivalent to the salary of one and a half month of working at a factory. In this way, we create jobs and empower women. On a regular base, other women are trained and once they finish the training they can integrate our spinning team.
The work is not finished yet! Dyeing is done by hand, and we use a dyeing brand following the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) standards. And also here, our dyeing workshop, even small, has water recycle plant. All dyeing water is recycled and reused for either sanitary usage or to water the vegetable garden.
Our labels are made from Lokta paper, a paper hand made in Nepal, coming from the Daphne plant. On each label, you find all the information needed for your skein and also the name and the face of the spinner who made your yarn!
With our project Nomad noos we aim to:
Help nomads to have additional incomes with other more sustainable fibers as our yak and camel and sheep fiber and be less dependent on cashmere fibers that way we help them to preserve their environment.
The life of a nomad is not easy, and more and more nomads abandon their way of life to live in the city. On the other hand often they sink in poverty because in town there is not enough work and in addition, there is great pollution of air. By buying our yarn you will support to keep alive this way of nomadic living and have a positive impact on the environment!
Empower women in Nepal by creating jobs. Increase the number of women in Nepal who spin and transform the fiber into Nomadnoos yarns according to our specifications. In Nepal is still a lot of poverty and often women are affected. By working for us, women can work at home or in a workshop, once they finish their household tasks, and increase their income and become financially more independent. With our fair pay, women will become financially more independent and can send their children to better schools and give them better food.
The 15,000 francs we wish to collect with your help through this campaign will help us to implement the following activities:
- Reserve the yak, camel and sheep fiber and pay the herders a down-payment in advance, which will help them to continue their nomadic lifestyle.
- Create a cozy workspace in Nepal, Kathmandu where the women can spin while bringing their children.
- Test different spinning wheels in Nepal, in order to develop a more comfortable way of spinning
If we reach our goal, the adventure will only begin! By participating in this campaign you will join us in a long-term project that you will be able to follow step by step.
Become a part of our community and #Knit4good with our beautiful yarns!
Risks and challenges
Over the past 2 years, we have been carefully working with confirmed spinner trainers in Nepal to develop our first yarn collection and we defined the best quality for spinning.
Our spinning trainers are training women on a regular base and once they are on a level of spinning in "a run" 50 grams of regular handspun yarn, they can integrate our supply chain.
Our colors are following approved lab dips, but since the hair of the animals is not completely white, and we overdye our fibers, there can be a slight difference in colors from lot to lot. But we are carying lot numbers in order to give every customer skeins of the same color so that they will not have different shades in their product.
We have confidence in our herders and are familiar with the process and potential risks involved in this first phase of production. Meaning selecting the best fibers quality we need to have for our yarns.
Creating a product that is coming from different countries implementing environmental and social impact isn’t easy, there is always a way to improve and we are working hard on that!
We aim to stay transparent and share our story with our customers. We believe in creating and investing in value, the same as our customer is also creating value while knitting or crochet their own personal products!
