iPhone 5 Update - Complete Re-Design

You made ChargeCard possible. Thank you.

If you pledged for ChargeCard for iPhone 4 or Android, you received your ChargeCards quite some time ago.

But If you swapped your reward for an iPhone 5 ChargeCard, then there's a good chance you haven't received your reward...yet.

Though we did deliver several hundred ChargeCards for iPhone 5, most of you haven't received your rewards yet. This is because we had to make a really tough decision: we had to halt production of ChargeCard for iPhone 5.

When we launched ChargeCard on Kickstarter last summer, iPhone 5 didn't exist.

Shortly after our fundraising campaign ended, we heard the announcement that Apple had developed a new connector for the upcoming iPhone 5: Lightning.

As a bootstrapped, Kickstarter-backed team, the news of Lighting's release couldn't have come at a worse time. Just as we'd begun making our molds for ChargeCard for iPhone 4, we learned that ChargeCard for iPhone 4 would soon be made obsolete.

We were stuck between a rock and a hard place. We'd spent months developing ChargeCard for iPhone 4 and Android, but now there was a new, yet unreleased connector for the upcoming iPhone. And we knew that many of you, our backers, were early adopters and would be some of the first to make the switch to iPhone 5.

While we're strong proponents of USB cable innovation (and we'll gladly admit that we think both the smaller size and reversibility of the new Lightning connector are great innovations), this threw a big wrench in our gears.

We immediately began searching for a way to make iPhone 5 using our original iPhone 4 and Android designs. And we thought we'd found one. We thought we could modify our iPhone 4 and Android tooling for ChargeCard for iPhone 5.

But after a lot of troubles in making our first several hundred iPhone 5 units, we were faced with an uncomfortable reality: the shape of iPhone 5's new Lightning cable didn't work well with our previous design.

We had a tough decision to make: We could either continue with the previous design or halt production and do a complete redesign and retooling of ChargeCard for iPhone 5.

As a young company, this wasn't an easy decision for us. We knew it would be a huge cost and commitment to design and create a completely new version of ChargeCard.
We also knew that this would cause another delay in delivering ChargeCard for iPhone 5, and we hate delays as much as you do.

After much deliberation, we knew what we had to do. As a team focused on innovative design, we decided to move forward with creating a new and improved ChargeCard for iPhone 5.

We're excited to announce the new ChargeCard for iPhone 5. Our new sleek, sexy and stealthy design ensures an even easier fit into your wallet. It also works on iOS 7 and future versions of iPhone (iPad and iPod, too).

For those of you awaiting a ChargeCard for iPhone 5, we've automatically switched your reward to the new ChargeCard for iPhone 5.

We'll be shipping out your order by October 15th, and we're pushing hard to deliver before this date.

Kickstarter backers will be first to receive the new ChargeCard for iPhone 5.

Thanks for supporting us and for being part of our team.

Please write back with any thoughts.

      Still waiting! How long?

    2. Creator jmonty on November 10, 2013

This product desperately needs an update!

    3. Creator Paul Rabinowitz on November 8, 2013

Great for you Ryan. At least that's one person here who's got one. For the ones of you who say it doesn't work on the 5s, is that the charge card that was sent out in the summer or the revised one going out now?

    4. Creator Ryan Bertrand on November 8, 2013

Finally got mine in the mail. I am happy it is over...

P.S. Works just fine on my 5S with iOS7

    5. Creator ep2002 on November 7, 2013

I also wanted to voice my concern about the product as it doesn't work on my iPhone 5s at all, but will charge my wife's iPhone 5 with a warning.

Just as a previous poster commented, "the Chargecard iPhone 5 does not work with iOS7/ iPhone 5s. I know this for a fact! Pity as this was a good idea. Just extremely bad execution. 1st time I felt cheated big time supporting a Kickstarter project"

Noah, Brian, Dave, and Chloe, any thoughts?

    6. Creator Rob Sauter on November 6, 2013

Wow - so I just noticed that they have gone and made a brand new product and haven't even shipped the chargecard to us original backers.

    7. Creator Bruce on November 5, 2013

An update on this is way overdue, hope you guys will furnish us with one very shortly....

    8. Creator Bear Cruz on November 3, 2013

Nov 3rd and haven't received my iPhone 5 card.

    9. Creator Dennis Kenike Dockx on November 2, 2013

I haven't received my product yet, I'm a bit beyond excitement at this point and I'm always on the go with a lightning cable that has many wear and broken isolations at the connectors, works pretty much for me.

I think the creators should make an update SOON, better yesterday then tomorrow! this update is about a month and half old and doesn't say much about how things are. I had many better experiences with other kickstarter projects where I had personal contact with the creators themselves to discuss about ideas and other kinds of shit. Learn out of your mistakes guys, it is us that are the key to your success as a company.

    10. Creator Paul Rabinowitz on November 2, 2013

Here it is November- need I say more? While I appreciate Noah thanking me for my patience, I'm about at the end. I've waited so long for the cards, that at this point, I don't even care about the product anymore.

    11. Creator Ryan Bertrand on November 1, 2013

How the F do you guys go and make a new product without even finishing your first?! Seriously guys.

    12. Creator Jason Veach on October 31, 2013

Yes-please provide an update as to those of use still awaiting the iphone 5 chargecards.

    13. Creator Lennart on October 28, 2013

@Ryan, you realize the chargekey is from the very same guys that have still not delivered the chargecard to us? Update please!

    14. Creator David Keogh on October 28, 2013

Hi guys anyone actually received their charge card since they were shipped on the 15th October ??

    15. Creator Paul Rabinowitz on October 27, 2013

Here's a reply I got from Noah today when I asked if the charge card works with the 5s-
Not to worry, works great on iPhone 5/5S and will work on the 6, too (as Apple will be using the Lightning cable for some years to come now on future versions of its iPhones, iPads and iPods).

    16. Creator Dennis Kenike Dockx on October 27, 2013

When do we receive a new update with the iOS7 compatible chargecards? It has been a while since we received some news.

    17. Creator Magdalene Teo on October 25, 2013

Chargecard iPhone 5 does not work with iOS7/ iPhone 5s. I know this for a fact! Pity as this was a good idea. Just extremely bad execution. 1st time I felt cheated big time supporting a Kickstarter project

    18. Creator Keith Tomlinson on October 24, 2013

Any updates on this? Getting bored of waiting now - it's been over a year. If it takes much longer I am going to ask for my money back.

    19. Creator Maikel Lodewijk on October 24, 2013

LoL @Ryan that product is also from Noah and Adam ;)

But I also changed to the charge key

    20. Creator Ryan Bertrand on October 24, 2013

Just backed this instead of waiting here for more non-updates.

    21. Creator Paul Rabinowitz on October 23, 2013

I believe most people would be more understanding if we had more frequent updates. Last update- cards being shipped October 15. Nothing received so far. Communication with customers is critical.

    22. Creator Carlos Mayne on October 21, 2013

      Any NEWS?

    23. Creator Ryan Bertrand on October 19, 2013

My guess is they never got shipped... So can we get another update?

    24. Creator Stuart Blackburn on October 14, 2013

      Shipping tomorrow?

    25. Creator hxlworkshop on October 8, 2013

      plz plz plz

    26. Creator Jake Cassidy on October 1, 2013

When I backed this, my girlfriend and I each had an iPhone 5. We since converted to Android phones. Can I change my order from iPhone 5 ChargeCards to Android versions?

    27. Creator Ed Lynch on September 27, 2013

I've been waiting since 8/22/2012 for 1 card. I hope October 15 marks the end of my waiting. 15 months... That's long enough I think.

    28. Creator Diego Momotiuk on September 20, 2013

I'm still waiting for mine. I pledged for the iPhone 5 charger. I hope october will be the end for my waiting...

    29. Creator Mike Poulos on September 11, 2013

      Hi Noah and Adam,

Just got my three cards today. Impressed it arrived in Indonesia. Was sent 07/10/2013. Took a while but got here.
      Thanks Guys.

    30. Creator Daniel Giovanni on September 4, 2013

Thank you guys, got some issue as well with the old iPhone 5 ChargeCard. Sent the email for the upgrade just now.

    31. Creator Anant on August 30, 2013

Thanks guys. Sent you an email for the upgrade.

    32. Creator Noah Dentzel + Adam Miller on August 27, 2013

If you've already received your iPhone 5 ChargeCard and you'd like to be upgraded to this new version, please email

    33. Creator Noah Dentzel + Adam Miller on August 26, 2013

ChargeCard for iPhone 5 works with iOS7 and future versions of iPhone/iPad/iPod.

    34. Creator Aaron on August 24, 2013

I appreciate your realization that the current iPhone 5 design doesn't work, but what about people like me who have theirs already? Are you offering a swap to the new design? The fact that you JUST started sending these out makes me think you saw this problem at the beginning and kept quiet for a while just to move products and shut people up.

    35. Creator HUGO TELLEZ on August 23, 2013

so... the ones that already have their chargecards... are kinda obsolete now that u've upgraded the new version???? or how's things... ???

    36. Creator Mark Ramdarass on August 22, 2013

Sometimes you wait for something good, but must wait a little longer for something better. These guys are doing great things. I gladly support and advocate great design + execution. Well worth the improvements. Good job guys!

    37. Creator Ryan Lindsley on August 22, 2013

I haven't got mine yet, so I hope I'm on the list for the newer version. It looks much better!

    38. Creator Juan Carlos Santana on August 22, 2013

I agree with the comments here... You should make the lightning plug longer so that it works with cases.. Also I received an Iphone 5 card and I'm currently using IOS7 and it's not working with my devices... Is there any way to get the new one?

    39. Creator David Iglesias (ditman) on August 22, 2013

Good job with the redesign! I'm really looking forward to getting mine! :D

    40. Creator demure on August 22, 2013

Having received a lightening version, I would strongly recommend making the updated version work with cases like lifeproof. I doubt I will have a chance to use this, as it doesn't fit with the case :(

    41. Creator Maxx on August 22, 2013

I received the IPhone 5 version and did not use it for a while, because It was just in my wallet as a backup. I kind of relied on it and when I needed it, it broke and put me in some kind of shitty situation. Thats actually not how its supposed to work. How do I get a replacement?

    42. Creator aaron Churchill on August 22, 2013

Great questions from the below. I did get a lightning card, but would definitely appreciate and enjoy the updated version. Willing to ship back or whatever is necessary to get the newer version. Thank you for the communication and information. You have been great to date.

    43. Creator Maikel Lodewijk on August 22, 2013

Is the new design Made For iPhone certified?

    44. Creator Anant on August 22, 2013

Hi guys, could you please add me to the list of those who would like a replacement lightning cable if possible. I have the same problems as Ben does below.

    45. Creator Jesse Grushack on August 22, 2013

Do the people who have received their iphone 5 charge charges receive the new design in october? or do we get to switch it out?

    46. Creator James on August 22, 2013

Same thought as others who have received the original IPhone 5 version, do we receive the updated version that will work with the new IOS? I only think that it is the right thing to do as none of the iPhone 5 cards should have shipped with any manufacturing issues.

    47. Creator Doug Otto on August 22, 2013

Worst case scenario, I guess I can leave it to my heirs; if it ships by then.

    48. Creator Kelli Garnett on August 22, 2013

I enjoy your candid transparency. It is much appreciated. Excited to receive the new design!

    49. Creator Ben Herzberg on August 22, 2013

I received my Lightning ChargeCard and it works, but not very efficiently. It easily disconnects and stops the charging process. It's also hard to get in & out of my wallet. Every time I plug it into my phone, my phone displays a pop-up saying that the accessory is not Apple certified and may not work as expected.

My assumption is that these issues will be resolved with the new, redesign of the Lightning ChargeCard. However, what I'm wondering is if I will be able to exchange my current Lightning ChargeCard for the new model once it becomes available. I surely hope I can! :)

    50. Creator Adam Klaff on August 22, 2013

I, too, am wondering if my initial iPhone 5 design will be replaced with the new design?
