About

Beagles and Lox was inspired by an icy Cleveland winter. Creative director and dog father, Nolan Beck, had run out of food for his cane corso, Penelope. He had planned on making Nigella Lawson's spaghetti and meatballs recipe for himself, and realized that by making a few modifications to the recipe he could make a meal for Penelope that she'd enjoy, that they could eat together, and that would prevent him from having to de-ice his car and drive through a snowstorm. Thus, he began cooking (very occasionally) for Penelope.

After Nolan posted these meals on social media, some people asked for dog-safe, human-friendly recipes, and Beagles and Lox was born. The book will feature (at least) 75 recipes inspired by (at least) 25 real-life dogs and their humans. The recipes are for food that you'll enjoy eating and can safely share with your pup. The nature of what a dog can safely eat means that most of these recipes will be classic and simple, meaning you can whip up a meal for your pup if you run out of food like Nolan did or if it's your adoption anniversary and you feel like celebrating, make it a night to remember.

The A-Team

The more we raise, the more puppies we can include. Each dog will have a bio so you can get to know their character a little bit, and recipes for a starter, main, and dessert based on each of their personalities and breeds. Each puppy's section will also include photos of them devouring their carefully prepared and plated meal, and I that's why we're all really here, right?

The majority of our funding will go towards funding the photography and styling behind the incredible images you see here, as well as developing a pretty substantial number of vet-approved recipes that are safe for our friends to eat. The team we've assembled for the project is really incredible, and we're so excited to get moving with them.

The photography team is headed by Nathan Dreimiller at Gris Studio, and includes Heidi Robb and Dana Sobota (who are honestly the best in the business of making food look beautiful.) Their work has been featured all over the world, in advertisements, cookbooks, packaging, and a thousand other forms. We are so lucky to have them involved in this project, because the resulting photos are going to be artful and beautiful.

Recipe development will be tackled by Aubrey Johansen. Aubrey is a personal chef and recipe developer in Cleveland whose puppy, Queso, will be featured in the book.

Emily Labes, a Cleveland native who now works in New York as a Creative Communications Specialist, will collaborate with Nolan on copywriting and drive the publication process.

Lastly, Dr. Bob is a fantastic vet at Tremont Animal Clinic, who is overseeing the recipe development. He will help modify and approve recipes to make sure that no harm comes to any dogs.

Special Rewards

The main reward for backing this project is the book, which you can see mocked up above. You can also join us in the photo studio, or even get your dog in the book. We'll also be unveiling new rewards throughout the campaign.

How cute is Jelly?
How cute is Jelly?

This is Jelly. Her dad, Brian Giniewski, is a super talented ceramicist from Philly who will be making ceramic water bowls for a certain reward level. There are only a limited number available, so make sure you snatch one up!

We've also asked a local printmaker to create a very limited run of this 12.5x19 poster for you. Available with and without a copy of the book. We actually thought about naming the book this but thought it was a little too punny, and decided it'd be best as a print.

Unfortunately, we're unable to donate to charity directly from a crowd-funding campaign, but once this creation project is closed out and the book is published, we're going to donate a chunk of sales profits to two charities. Many of the dogs in the book were adopted at the Cleveland Kennel, so we'll be donating 10% to Friends of the Cleveland Kennel. The other 10% will be donated to The Grey Muzzle Organization, which gives a second chance to senior dogs.

Risks and challenges

I know what you're thinking. Dogs shouldn't be eating human food all the time, which is true. These recipes are intended for special occasions or when the gravity of life hits you really hard and you realize that you've been cooking for one for several years and it might be nice to share a meal with someone, and all you have is your puppy, who you love to the end of the world and back but can never fill the void that a loving partner could. These recipes are not intended to replace regular meals for your dog. They should only be made on occasion.

Every recipe is developed excluding ingredients that dogs can't eat, like onion, garlic, grapes, certain nuts, avocado, chocolate, and more. They've also all been reviewed and vetted (pun intended) by Dr. Bob Litkovitz, DVM, who is Penelope's vet, as well as a few other dogs' in the book.

It's also worth noting that like humans, some of our dogs have allergies that we might not be aware of. While each of the recipes in the book has been approved by a vet as generally safe for dogs, know your dog and what they can eat before cooking for them.
