We're making a sequel to the successful web game Kingdom → PLAY NOW ← primarily for iOS, but potentially for Android and PC too. We're not just porting the original, we have listened to your feedback and we're building a brand new game. Kingdom is an experimental game with a focus on aesthetics, and gameplay that emerges from a few simple actions. You've asked us for more, and this campaign is your chance to make it happen!
We're grabbing all the things that were good about the original game, and taking it much further. First of all, we've heard a lot of you say that the A.I. in the original was pretty horrible. That is the first thing we'll fix. We're making the citizens smarter without turning them into predictable robots.
Second, the game will be bigger and more varied. The world will feel alive with citizens and critters going about their business, all with their effect on gameplay. There will be more jobs and more dramatic changes in environment. Think of things like the weather having an impact on crop harvest, shepherds with herds of sheep. And fire, both the good and bad kind.
Exploration is a big part of the original game: figuring out what to do and how the world reacts to your actions. We're adding a very strong new component to that: the forest. The forest surrounds your kingdom on all sides and contains a lot of surprises for the player. Including random encounters, and perks and technologies for the Kingdom to use. We won't spoil too much, because discovering these things and how they work is a big part of what makes the game fun.
And of course, we're not losing sight of what made the original good. Though we're adding a lot of stuff to the world, there still will be no buttons, no HUD, no cursor, no unit commands. You are the King and gold is how you talk.
We're including the "spend time with the developers" perk at the LEGACY level, because we actually think it's really cool if you want to meet us! We'd love to talk about the game with you and show you what we're working on.
As you might have noticed, most of the rewards don't include the actual game. We can't give the iOS game as a reward because Apple doesn't allow international gifting in any way, shape or form. We really hate this kind of restriction too. We've had multiple conversations with Apple about the subject and didn't find a solution.
The Dutch are lucky this time, as we can gift it to them directly. They needed a lucky break though: season 2 of Orange is the new Black isn't even on Netflix here ;).
All rewards from € 5 upwards include the Mac, Android and PC game, if we reach the stretch goals for making them.
The YAY STICKERS reward will get you a sheet of stickers with different characters and props from Kingdom. We will print them nice and big, the archer should be the size of a thumb. A preview is below, but the final stickers will of course include sprites from the new game.
With our initial goal, we're aiming at the lowest sum of money that will allow us to finish the game. However, if you love us so much that we exceed that goal, the game can be bigger & better. Help the King finish his tower below.
(€ 11000) Backer-Exclusive Content: We'll add a bunch of special features to the game to thank those who made all this possible: you! Unlockable by our backers only. Some of these will be cosmetic, like the ability to play under a special coat of arms. Others will be gameplay-related, like a random encounter that backers can discover in the forest.
(€ 13000) Mac Build: With this much money we can take some time to enable keyboard controls—LEFT, RIGHT, DOWN maybe?—and rework the interface to get a smooth experience on big screens. We'll distribute this Mac version of the game for free, to all backers of the € 5 level and above.
(€ 17000) An Even BIGGER Game: At this moment, the gameplay is still quite similar to that of the original Flash game. We're planning to expand on that, but given funds, we could expand even more! We're not going to bloat the game with random add-ons, but there are some gameplay and aesthetic features that can make Kingdom an even greater experience.
(€ 20000) Android Version: With this level of love & support we'll build the game for the Android-owners out there. Oh, and we'll send it for free, to all backers of the € 5 level and above.
(€ 37000) PC Version (update!): You have been telling us you want a PC version of the sequel, so if we can collect the funds, we'll start building Kingdom as a cross-platform game immediately! We're offering this PC version for free to all the YOU'RE GOLD backers and above. With your support and a little luck, our backers (including you) will be getting the game for almost every platform at once!
Thanks to Thomas Jongstra for the filming & editing of our video.
Risks and challenges
The biggest danger at this point is inflating the scope of the game too much. There is a delicate balance in giving the player "more" while keeping the spirit of the original. Additionally, if the game gets too big, development will take longer and we'd like to get this game to you sooner rather than later!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
