Get to know the Slatewood Lamp™
The color and texture of wood brings life to any surface, product, and room. We designed the Slatewood Lamp as an adaptable platform that accommodates all types of media. Both soft and hard Wood is at the core of this design but Glass and Carbon Fiber are also available. Having such an open slate ensures that there is a perfect match for your favorite desk, end table, night stand, living room set, the paint on your walls, or anything else that brings pleasure to your locality.
All of our patented lamp shades are hand fabricated by our illustrious and experienced team of craftsmen. There are two distinct styles, let's get you acquainted...
We tried to keep the backer levels as simple as possible. If you feel that we have left out a level that you can't live without, just let us know and we will see what we can do.
UPDATE - New levels added. You can now by 2 Lamps or Shades from each category. If you request 2 of the same type of shades or lamps, they are guaranteed to match.
Starting with the first level and including all other levels, backers will receive an entry into our Backer Mosaic. You can send us a picture of your choice or we can pick one for you. For each time that you pledge you will receive one image entered into the mosaic. The mosaic that we create will resemble the Slatewood Lamps! The more backers we get, the more detailed the mosaic will become. Its our way of showing that our backers are a real part of what we create.
Engraved Pen Set - Ships in May / With your Lamp
At the second level, backers will receive a refillable roller ball pen Laser Engraved with the NoEnd Designs Logo. It comes with a stand that was designed in house and handmade by a local woodworker. The stand comes in your choice of dark Walnut or light Maple (the left two stands in the picture below). If you buy any of the higher levels we will automatically match the wood of the pen stand to the wood of your lamp shade. For example, the Ebony and Redwood Burl varieties below. These sets will only be available on this Kickstarter!
The Slatewood Series - Ships in July

The Maple shade is handcrafted with American sourced wood. We use only specific types of maple with smooth undulating “curls” visible during the daylight hours. When lit the shade glows yellow-orange with its normally subdued grain greatly enhanced. Pairs well with both light and dark colored furniture. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Cherry shade is handcrafted with American sourced wood. It has a light pinkish-brown color when cut but darkens with time to a rich reddish-brown. When lit the shade glows vibrant orange. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Red Oak shade is handcrafted with American sourced wood. Red oak has a distinctly porous grain that makes for a unique texture of light. A heavy pattern of darks and lights glow orange when lit. The lamp looks great with light colored furniture, especially oak. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Walnut shade is handmade from American wood. Similar to the mahogany in its gentle coloration, it accents most furniture quite nicely. When lit, it produces a soft clean light. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Sapele shade is one of our most flashy shades. Its deep reds give it a highly distinctive look. When lit the shade lets off a reddish-gold light. Just like all our lamps, it is handmade. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Mahogany shade is the definitive wood color. Its smooth brown tone is more subtle than some of our other Razor hardwoods and is sure to look good in any setting. This handmade shade lets off a beautiful golden brown tone when lit. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.

The Redwood Burl shade is painstakingly handcrafted. The delicate nature of burl wood calls for additional coatings and reinforcements. The wood for each lamp is hand picked. We believe the additional time and energy invested in this lamp are justified by its brilliant and unmatched colors. The comment we get most is that it looks like “Fire“. The dark reds in the wood create a sensual and moody atmosphere. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Ebony shade is truly unique. With impressive black and brown stripes there is nothing quite like it. You will find that it looks fantastic with most colors of furniture especially black furniture. If placed in a corner, several of the “blades” can be removed on the back side for an even more dramatic play of light and shadows. This will also increase the amount of light that filters into the room. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
Designed to be an adaptable platform, the Slatewood Lamp can come in a wide range of materials. This variant is unlike any other. Lavish use of real Carbon Fiber gives this lamp a distinctly futuristic design. Each lamp is painstakingly hand crafted and only limited numbers are available. Both the Arc and the Razor are available in carbon fiber. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
The Slatewood Singular - Hand Delivered in May
The Slatewood Singular was designed in collaboration with a local glass blower. We will only produce ONE of these exclusive shades. To accommodate for the extra weight of the glass we designed and machined a more robust aluminum support. As an additional reward, it will be hand delivered and assembled on site by the designer. It is only available in the continental US. Click the image for more pictures of this lamp.
A quick note on wood: The grain and color of wood is like a fingerprint. No two trees are exactly alike. We choose our woods to match the example pieces as closely as possible but we cannot guarantee that your lamp will look exactly like this. With that said, we can guarantee that your lamp will be one of a kind.
Our lamps require an LED or Compact Fluorescent bulb. A 100-150 watt incandescent equivalent bulb produces a satisfying amount of light depending on the size of you room. For all photos on the website a 2700K - 2150 lumen - 125 watt equivalent CFL was used. It's our favorite of many tested.
Do not use an incandescent bulb with our lamps. Why? Because of HEAT, and lots of it. Wood naturally absorbs the moisture present in the air. When heated, the wood releases this moisture and contracts. When the lamp is turned off, it cools and the moisture returns. This expansion/contraction process can dry out and damage the wood over time. We want your lamp to last forever, so please be kind to it and do not use an incandescent bulb.
At NoEnd Designs™ we are committed to responsible product development. We want to ensure the health and survival of the natural world; it's the only way to run a business.
- Back at any level over $1 and we will plant a tree for you. We plan to personally plant them here in the Atlanta area with our own two hands. In every year of life your tree will absorb several pounds of CO2. If it lives to maturity it could absorb over 1 Ton of CO2.
- The majority of our domestic woods are sustainably sourced.
- We use modern design techniques that limit the use of wood and eliminate waste.
Another issue we stand firm on is Nickel Plating. It gives a great look but has a dark side. Nickel plating is done through a process that uses toxic chemicals. It is some pretty nasty stuff and must be dealt with in an environmentally friendly way and that dramatically increases production costs. In the US the EPA mandates this disposal process. In China and other manufacturing nations, there are no similar standards. The chemicals from the nickel plating process are often not properly disposed of and the resulting product is significantly cheaper as a result. We can not justify a lower priced product over the health and well being of the people of the world.
A note on production: Our lamps are hand made. Unlike plastic products, there is no simple or inexpensive way to develop tooling that will crank out thousands of parts in just a few hours. The wood must be hand selected and then cared for throughout the whole production process. Several environmentally friendly coatings are applied to the wood at different stages. This ensures that the wood will maintain its beautiful color and luster.
With the Slatewood Lamp™ you are not getting your typical Ikea® lamp shade... not that we dont like Ikea®! When our craftsmen build these, we like to think of them as works of art. We spend a lot of time and energy on them so that they can be enjoyed in your home or apartment for decades to come.
A note on shipping: We ship lamp shades and pen sets to anywhere in the world. International backers are responsible for applicable tariffs and customs fees.
A lot of people helped us get to this point. A huge thanks to Cole Dobson - technical drawing, David W-S - graphic design and music (davidws.com) Justin Romo - design services. The Slatewood Lamp could not have happened with out you guys!
A big thanks to the Dobson's and Rawlins' for opening up their home for us to take pictures. Max Heller for voice overs. Craig Myers and Ryan Smith for machining and advice. And everyone else that helped along the way.
An extra special thanks to Georgina Anton for the painting "Midsummer" georginaanton.com
A equally big thanks to Lorena Pugh for her painting "Wave Tryptic #1" lorenapugh.com
On a trip to my apartment's dumpster I found a cool lamp stand without a shade. I brought it back and gave it a home all the while thinking about what could be done to diffuse the light. Buying one never came to mind, this was an opportunity to make something new and interesting. Eventually the material was chosen, and it was wood. One sample pack of veneers later, I had a direction to go in.
The Razor was first but it didn't quite work for the lighter woods. We wanted to see through them and capture more of their forms in one piece. The team and I deliberated on what could be done for a few days and eventually, the Arc was born. After 12 prototypes the designs were finalized and the manufacturing techniques were tweaked. Another 20 versions were created for testing and use in the visual material you see here today.
During the process of making the lamps and the video we spent some time on a few fun projects. For some interesting shots for the video, we knew we would need some equipment to work with. An old drafting printer, a retro skate board, a drill guide, an unfinished lamp base, a circular saw guide, and parts from 2 VCRs dismantled long ago went into this rig. With the rotating base and the stabilizing bar we were able to get the nice revolve, track, and pan shots that you see in the video.
In planing for the classy bedroom shots and a nice setting for the floor lamp, we whipped up this creation. The headboard actually detaches from the bed frame and becomes faux wood floor! After a few renders to decided on what colors and patters to use, we put 30 hours of veneer work into it (don't worry, we like woodworking). Not long after we were snapping pictures in two different scenes.
Designing and innovating is our passion. Given the chance, we will show you what else we can do. By pledging, this is how you will make a huge difference:
- You enable us to immediately secure a larger workshop for our craftsmen. The plans are already in place, we just need to hit the GO button.
- The ability to produce products in house and employ local artists is very important to us. We are close to our goals, you can help us make the final step.
- Despite all the fun we had making things like the "retro skateboard camera truck", we need more professional tools like: Camera equipment, more grinders, a power metal shear, a coatings station, a tumbler, the list goes on. If you pledge we can achieve high production numbers and help reduce costs of production all the while returning the favor with all the stretch goals we can muster.
Risks and challenges
The PRODUCT and PRODUCTION
We have spent a huge amount of time building partnerships with experienced craftsman, suppliers, and manufacturers of all sizes to reduce risks as much as possible. Local and National manufactures will handle high volume orders over 1000 units. The products for the upper Backer levels will be made in house regardless of pledge numbers.
For low volume sales of up to 1000 (actual number varies by part) we have put together an extraordinary team of metal and wood workers that will handle the manufacturing process.
In house our production times per lamp are accurate to the 5 minute mark and with improved tooling we can produce lamps in a fraction of the time that we do now.
We have spent 2 years analyzing exactly how to construct these lamps. They have been through hot, cold, and damp testing. They have had every imaginable coating applied to them. Every kink has been worked out and we can now proudly say that they have been engineered to last a lifetime.
All electrical components used in the manufacture of the Slatewood Lamps are UL® listed. If you help our campaign become beyond successful, we can get UL® listed too.
Despite having built several dozen Lamps during the prototyping phase, we know there can still be unexpected challenges along the way. We will always be transparent and inform our backers of any hurdles that we encounter.
The PACKAGING and SHIPPING
With 10 years of packaging and shipping experience we know how to send delicate, heavy, and large items all over the world. Our crowning achievement was the packaging design and shipment of bouquets of dried wildflowers in 5lb glass vases. We know packaging.
On occasion, shipping companies will run over a box, maybe twice! Rest assured that your item is fully insured against damage in shipment.
Our ship dates are conservative. We have added in additional time for any unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event that things take longer than planned, we will keep you up to date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
