A Sign Painter’s Sketchbook is a hand-drawn book by one of the world’s most talented and inspiring sign painters: Noel B. Weber. In supporting this project at the $65 level, you will receive a hardcover book filled with Noel's hand-drawn letters, creative layouts, and unique ideas.
A Sign Painter’s Sketchbook is an instant keepsake for anyone interested in lettering, typography, graphic design, and sign painting.
Noel's sign painting and gold leaf glass gilding are recognized and loved by sign painters around the world. During his 45-year career he has designed and produced signs for countless cafes, bakeries, toy stores, tattoo shops, casinos, and even Disney theme parks. Noel is respected for the quality of his work and his commitment to sharing his knowledge as a teacher, mentor, and friend.
Now, for the first time, Noel’s production sketches and lettering are available for anyone to appreciate in this beautiful new collection: A Sign Painter’s Sketchbook.
Noel’s production sketches make up the majority of the book. They are the basis for projects produced at his shop. You'll find sketches for gilded windows, dimensional signs, wall signs, and boat lettering. Noel has also included many personal drawings with designs that are free from the constraints of commercial application. These include monograms for friends, odes to Idaho rivers, and love letters to his wife, Lucy.
With your help, we can complete the book's production at a printer we know and trust in the United Kingdom. A Sign Painter’s Sketchbook is being manufactured at the highest level of quality with fabric covers, foil stamped spines, beautiful end pages, head and tail bands, and protective dust jackets. We’re drawing inspiration from the great sign painting books of the early 1900s in order to bring a new classic to life.
A Sign Painter’s Sketchbook is an intimate glimpse into Noel B. Weber's skill, his creative mindset, and above all, his passion for drawing letters.
A Keeper of the Craft:
The art of hand lettering and the craft of sign painting were almost abandoned for the convenience of digital design and cheap vinyl signs. Suddenly, traditional approaches are enjoying a renaissance, especially among young, self-taught artists who are rediscovering the pencil and the brush. Noel B. Weber is one of the few working sign painters who can still claim a formal education in technical hand lettering.
Praise from Dave Smith, Sign Painter and Illustrator:
“I met Noel in 1995 at the Letterheads’ 20th Anniversary. I was very excited to attend a glass gilding workshop led by one of the original seven Letterheads. It was a turning point for my creative outlook - I could see that it was possible to create works of art with type. Over the years, I have been astounded by Noel’s lettering and designs. I have also come to know him as a close friend. This book of beautifully rendered art will be a wealthy source of knowledge for years to come.”
From the foreword by Mark Oatis, original Letterhead and Sign Painter:
"In your hands, reader, you hold an intimate and personal gift, one usually reserved for a small audience: the development drawings which reveal the artist’s own process of creation. Here are thumbnail roughs and tightened drafts, experiments and explorations, graphite marks that allow us to glimpse their maker, caught in the act of dreaming."
Noel graduated from Chicago’s Institute of Lettering and Design (‘71) and began his apprenticeship at Diamond Outdoor in Des Plaines, Illinois. He continued in the trade in Denver and became one of the founding members of the Letterhead sign painting movement. In the 1980s, Noel moved to Boise, Idaho and founded Classic Design Studio. Classic’s client list includes Disney, Whole Foods Market, the City of Boise, and hundreds of small businesses. Noel’s work has been featured repeatedly in trade publications such as Signs of the Times, Sign Craft, Sign Business and Letterheads Magazine, as well as recent editions of The Speedball Textbook.
From the introduction by Noel B. Weber:
"Up until a few years ago I rarely shared production sketches with anyone outside the shop, other than a client. Then my daughter Anna gave me a book of architectural drawings with a simple note: It would be so nice to have a book of your sketches. I love that people will be able to hold this book and see these sketches just as I do in my studio."
A Sign Painter’s Sketchbook also has sketches designed for The Letterheads, a sign movement that Noel co-founded in 1974. The Letterheads are still dedicated to keeping the craft of sign painting alive. The 2018 London Letterheads event brought together 150 sign painters from 30 countries.

Risks and challenges
We had a short run of books produced by our UK based printer, and we have established an excellent relationship with their self publishing team. Although we are confident about our delivery goals, there is a small chance that unforeseen production issues could delay our timeline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
