Ignition Zero is a queer, urban fantasy webcomic that started on January 28, 2011 and ended on October 17, 2016! This Kickstarter will fund the print costs for the final installment of the comic, Volume 3. It will also fund a re-printing of Volumes 1 and 2. With this campaign, you can complete your collection of volumes or buy the entire comic at once!
I will not do another large print run of this comic in the future. This campaign is the only surefire way to get Ignition Zero in print, and will ensure I have these books to sell for years to come, even as I move on to other projects!
Ignition Zero is a comic about a group of college-age friends who get mixed up with faeries and spirits. It takes place in the fictitious city of Glory, Maryland, and covers the adventure Robbie, Orson, Neve, and Martin have with the spirit of the city, a being they call Ivory. The story begins when Robbie moves to Glory to go to school, and gets to meet his internet-friend Orson in person for the first time. But Robbie gets more than he bargains for when Orson reveals that some of his friends aren't human!
When Robbie meets Ivory, she immediately accepts him as one of her protectors; she gives him her avatar light, which lets her connect to him for more powerful magic. She needs this magic to defend herself from a vengeful spirit called Vaidya, who seems intent on attacking Ivory at every turn....or is she? As they get drawn deeper into the conflict, Robbie & co. become less certain about which side to take in the fight. Is there a "right side" in this story?
As the gang starts to unravel the truth of the situation, they reveal truths about themselves as well. Sometimes in other people's conflicts, we unexpectedly find ourselves staring into a mirror, forced to admit who we really are. It's hard to face difficult truths about our friends, and even harder to face the shadows within ourselves. How Orson, Robbie, Neve, Martin, and their friends deal with these revelations is the real challenge they must face. Can they find compassion and understanding not just for each other, but for themselves?
The cast of Ignition Zero is largely queer-identified in some way, and there is definitely some adorable queer/ace romance involved in the story! However, this is not a story ABOUT being queer and all that can entail. It is simply an urban fantasy story with a queer cast.
As a queer, nonbinary, ace-spectrum person myself, I know how important this kind of representation is. I don't always want to read coming-out stories, as important as they are, and personally I have trouble reading stories featuring the difficulties and discrimination of being queer. I face enough of that in real life! I want to read about characters l can identify with doing cool things that relate to other parts of my life, or that are fun and fantastical. I know many people feel the same way. Thus, my approach with this story!
- Volume 1 (Chapters 1-3, bonus content) - 108 pages
- Volume 2 (Chapters 4-6, bonus content) - 160 pages
- Volume 3 (Chapters 7-9 + Epilogue, bonus content) - 140 pages
Get them as PDFs or as physical, softcover books! All three volumes come with exclusive bonus content you can't read anywhere else. Bonus content includes extra worldbuilding info, short stories, bonus comics, and a peek at the comic making process.
The physical books are printed in full color, with glossy covers, at magazine size (8"x10.5"). PDFs will be a high-resolution, DRM-free web format you can read on any computer. PDFs also include all the same bonus content as the physical books!
- "We're All Right" sew-on patch
This 4.5"x4.5" cotton patch takes a quote and important symbols from the comic and turns them into something you can sew on your bag, a shirt, or anywhere you like! If you've read through to the end of the comic, you'll know what it's referencing. If you haven't, I don't want to spoil it! But I think you'll like the sentiment once you have.
- Custom portrait of you in IZ style
For this reward, I'll draw and paint you (or a friend/relative/original character) in the style of an Ignition Zero character! Ink and watercolor, very simple background. You'll receive the physical drawing in the mail along with your books.
- Original comic page/art
Ignition Zero was created entirely in traditional media, which means that every page has an original physical form! For this reward, you get to pick a comic page and I will mail you the original art for it. Like a certain moment in the comic? Now you can hang the original art for it on your wall, maybe even put it in a frame! Watercolor doesn't scan very well, despite my adjustments, and so you'll get to see the page in all its natural glory.
Specifically, Ignition Zero was made with ink and watercolor, on 140lb watercolor paper. Original pages for Chapters 1-5 are 9"x12" and Chapters 6-9 + the Epilogue are 11"x15" in size.
NOTES ON ORIGINAL PAGES:
- Page choices will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-serve basis (you'll be able to list 3 pages in order of preference, so if your first choice is gone, you will get your second choice, etc).
- Includes chapter covers and single splash pages*!
- Excludes double-page splash spreads**.
- Some early pages are not available because they were rewards in the IZ Volume 1 Kickstarter back in 2012.
- Some pages may have minor mistakes on them that I later fixed in Photoshop (ink blots, missing speech bubbles, etc).
- Some earlier parts of the comic had speech bubbles done digitally, and so contain no dialogue, just empty bubbles.
*A splash page is a page that is one big illustration, with no panels.
**A double splash page is a big illustration that goes across two pages in the physical book. It's not eligible for this reward tier because it is two pages, not one!
Ignition Zero has been a huge part of my life for the last six years. I started it not intending to make a career in comics, but quickly learned that this is exactly where I belong. Your support of this Kickstarter makes my dreams possible. It also funds more representation of queer and trans characters written by a queer and trans author! Whether you're a long-time reader or brand new to the story, I hope you enjoy this comic and find a little bit of yourself in it.

Risks and challenges
All of the rewards are complete and ready to go; all I need to know is how many of each thing to order! I learned a lot from my first Kickstarter in 2012 and have come to this one fully prepared.
Therefore, the only real risk lies in delays from the printer or unexpected, uncontrollable life events. I promise to communicate any and all such delays to all backers in a timely manner, so you all know what to expect and when you will get your rewards. Even without delays, I promise to keep everyone updated on how fulfillment is going on my end.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
