About this project
Hello! We are Melle Koot and Volken de Vlas. Nockstone has sprung from our joint interest for sustainable solutions in designs. Our own studios also revolve around sustainability. To see other examples of our work check out www.mellekoot.nl and www.volkendevlas.nl
A little bit of history.
Four years ago we were triggered by the idea of a building block. One single interlocking piece to build and change designs. We challenged ourselves to design one that would easily assemble and disassemble yet would be light, strong and durable, recyclable and producable.
Cooperation with Pezy Development.
Based in our home town we met the people of Pezy. They became our valued partner. As they state it, Pezy is "pushing the technological boundaries in the fields of mechanics and applied plastics." People at Pezy are passionate about creating innovative products and really nice people too.
The first drawings.
We started sketching, working on several types of blocks and ideas. Our goal was a building block that would we able to share multiple connections on all sides, giving it the ability to build dense and strong constructions in stead of creating only planes or hollow spaces.
The first prototypes.
Once we came up with our final concept, Pezy started developing the technical aspects.
We wanted the material to comply to the highest standards of sustainability. For our translucent stones we choose a brand new high-tech material called Ecozen. It is the worlds first eco-friendly and high-temperature co-polyester. It is non-toxic and has excellent high-clarity and gloss properties. It received the Cradle to Cradle Gold certificate.
The pilot run.
All looked promising and jointly we decided to invest in a small injection mold to produce a pilot run of the first prototypes.
The results were great. The nockstones were strong and light. Easy to handle, easy to assemble and disassemble and re-usable over and over again. It actually worked!
PIT joined up.
Then we met the great team of PIT, a collective of artists who got enthousiastic about the concept and joined the nockstone campaign. They are a joy to work with and have been shooting all the film and doing the artwork, website and photography
Premiere at Milan.
At Salone di Mobile in Milan we had a chance to show our first results in the great environment of San Gregorio Docet, organized by Leclettico. We used our first range of several hundreds of prototypes to show some possibilities with Nockstone. The reactions were great and it was really nice to finally show our project out in the open.
Ready for production!
This is where the community of Kickstarter kicks in. Nockstone is ready for production, what we need is a production mold and the ability to order a large quantity of stones.
Each stone is a small product in it's own right, with very high quality engineering behind it. A really innovative and extremely durable designproduct.
First production of nockstones for our backers.
Only when we reach our target of at least 50.000 we can order enough Nockstones for a first production run. We believe in this direct contact between makers and users where all pledges go straight to the project without any brokering. Together with the Kickstarter community we can make this happen!
With each reward we ship our buildingschemes for all items we've already made. Buildingschemes will also be available in a section on our website soon!
Risks and challenges
With Pezy we have a partner with great and trustworthy contacts. Through their network we've made contact with well equiped producers where we can order our production mold and subsequently the nockstones in any desired quantity.
Our biggest task lies in setting up the processing and distribution of all this. First of all to get the rewards to our backers, and we plan to do this worldwide though major parcel services. Luckily we found many tips already in the Kickstarter community and related blogs so we're confident in making it work. It will all be hard work which we're happy to do.
Secondly we want to keep the community alive after the campaign and build up a network of retailers where Nockstone will be available in the future when our campaign is finished.
We plan to make Nockstone a company where we can develop new types of building block for different uses. A future of different types of building blocks for e.g. housebuilding or gardening.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
