Be a part of the first world-class pinball and classic arcade expo in the Southeast!
What is the Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo?
The first-ever Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo (SFGE) will be held June 20-22, 2014 at the Marriott Century Center in Atlanta, Georgia. SFGE is a gaming convention that focuses on the nostalgia of the classic arcade and the shift towards modern-day home gamerooms. This event will feature over 100 vintage (and newer) arcade games and pinball machines set on free play, exciting guest speakers and seminars, film screenings, vendors, an outdoor swap meet, and even a world-class PAPA Circuit pinball tournament.
We already have some great guests lined up to be a part of the show. Our featured speakers include pinball designers Barry Ousler and John Trudeau, “Video Game Player of the Century” and “King of Kong” star Billy Mitchell, and even Pac-Man fever recording artist Jerry Buckner. You can enjoy in-depth panel discussions, celebrity Q & A sessions, repair seminars, and live podcasts. There will also be plenty of vendors offering everything from t-shirts and game parts to custom game cabinets and gameroom décor. Additionally, we’ll be screening noteworthy documentaries including “The Video Craze” and “The Space Invaders.” We’ve secured over 10,000 square feet of floor space to allow for a maximum number of games, exhibitors, and fun for everyone during the weekend!
Why we think this show will succeed
When our friend Tim started testing the waters of a gaming-specific event by hosting the Atlanta Pin Swap two years ago, he proved that there was local interest. By expanding the size, duration, features, exhibitors, and number and types of games available for play, the Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo will be an even larger success and draw crowds from near and far.
Gaming is still a part of our culture, but the dynamic has shifted. The arcade culture, or that of gaming out in public with your friends and family, is either in decline or completely nonexistent in most parts of the country. The Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo will give those with nostalgia for the by-gone era of arcades a chance to relive that wonderful experience and give them an opportunity to play games they remember, along with plenty of games they have never experienced before. SFGE is a family-friendly show that will allow parents who experienced the arcade culture first-hand an opportunity to pass on a unique experience and instill a love of gaming with their children.
And of course there’s our location… Atlanta’s southern charm and world-class sophistication makes it one of the most popular destinations in the Southeast to visit. Originally built as the terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, Atlanta remains a hub for transportation with the world’s busiest airport. That means there are plenty of flights available from wherever you are in the world! Getting here by car is a breeze too, because we’re situated at the crossroads of three major Interstates: I-75, I-85 and I-20.
We want this, our first event, to be a tremendous success, but we know we need some help in order to do so. That’s why we’re coming to you, the Kickstarter community, to help us ensure this expo goes off without a hitch. The more funding we can secure before the show, the better the show will be - so we're using crowdfunding as a platform to raise the capital needed to put on the best show we can! It also offers rewards and incentives to supporters that would otherwise be unavailable in return for supporting our expo. Don’t worry – the Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo will still happen, regardless of the success of the Kickstarter campaign (it just may not be as awesome as it could be with your help).
What we’ll use the money for
Putting on a show like this costs a LOT of money, and our Kickstarter goal doesn’t even cover all of it. Therefore, we intend to use the money for 100% show-related costs such as hotel convention space rental, celebrity guest travel and expenses, and electrical power. As you can imagine, it takes a bunch of electricity to power over 100 games! We will NOT be using this money for personal payouts.
Thanks to your amazing support and contributions, our Kickstarter funding goal has been met, and the first annual Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo is well on its way to being an epic event! We want to keep making SFGE even better for you, so we're not stopping at $4,000. Here's what we have planned for when we meet the following 'stretch' goals:
$4,500 (Achievement Unlocked) - Early admission for ALL ticketed Kickstarter backers PLUS a commemorative Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo vinyl decal, perfect for displaying on your refrigerator, vehicle, backpack or suitcase - but never, ever on your classic coin-op game! ;)
$5,000 - Friday night Kickstarter Party in the Gameroom for all backers! After the expo is officially closed to the general public, we'll keep the Gameroom open for an extra hour just for you so you can continue playing all the Free Play games. We'll bring the 80s music to add to the fun!
$5,250 - Downloadable desktop wallpaper version of the PinBot Minimalist poster. For Kickstarter backers only.
$5,500 - Downloadable desktop wallpaper version of the Bride of PinBot Minimalist poster. For Kickstarter backers only.
$5,750 - Downloadable and printable 11x17 "Arcade Etiquette" poster - a must for every gameroom!
$6,000 - Everyone who attends the 2014 Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo will be invited to an exclusive mini-concert by the world-renowned Buckner & Garcia Band! Not only will they play their hits from the 80s like "Pac-Man Fever" and "Do the Donkey Kong", it will also be their very first live, onstage performance of "Wreck It, Wreck-It Ralph" from the popular Disney animated movie, "Wreck-It Ralph". (appearance based on the band's availability at the time this goal is met.)
Follow our Progress
We want to keep you informed of not only our campaign, but the expo in general. We've made it easy for you to keep up with us: sign up for our newsletter on our website, "Like" us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter.
Risks and challenges
As stated earlier, this event will happen in 2014 regardless of the outcome of the Kickstarter campaign. However, if we fail to reach our goal, an expo in 2015 may be in question. If we don’t meet our goal, our Expo will still be awesome, but if we meet our goal it can be really, REALLY awesome! Our team includes talented, knowledgeable individuals with one goal in mind: hosting a great inaugural event for you in 2014 - we won’t settle for anything less!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
