Hi! I'm Noah Cebuliak - Montréal-based singer, multi-instrumentalist and poet. This Kickstarter project aims to cover the cost of printing a minimum of 100 copies of my first book.
About The Project
The book is a collection of my meditations, reflections and streams of consciousness on subjects primarily concerning the maturing masculine psyche: adventure, initiation, loss, women, brotherhood, anger, ecstasy. Many of the poems are set in the context of the Canadian wilderness, in which I have personally discovered great wealth, both in myself and in the energetic space of nature. The book is an ode to rediscovering sacred masculinity in the most vulnerable, outrageous and passionate modes available.
The Winter of My Mind is a step forward from my previous work, which has until now been rooted in music and song. In November 2012 I released my first EP, Saltwater, as Ghost Lights. Folky and softly spoken, the record represented my very first attempts at addressing the issues I tackle more firmly in this book.
Here's a track from the album:
Below is a video of me playing live in Kingston, ON, shot last summer for Southern Souls.

Mission & Purpose
Although my songwriting is very lyrical, the boundaries of song often restrict the temporal flow that simple poetry allows. In other words, with this book I was able to say some things I had wanted to say in a way not previously available to me.
Through the process of creating music and poetry, I have discovered my purpose: to investigate, distill and communicate those treasures and gifts offered by the most remote and infrequently travelled parts of psyche, the world, and human experience, however inconvenient or uncomfortable. This book is a culmination of that process. Obviously, I'm really excited for its' release. However, printing books is expensive, and thus our convergence here on Kickstarter.
Numbers & Stretch Goals
Goal # 1 = 100 books = $1000
Goal # 2 = 200 books = $1800
Goal # 3 = 200 books and recoup expenses** = $2300
Goal # 4 = 300 books, recoup and small book tour = $3000
**Expenses for my book designer, copy editing, promotion and administration fees have been paid in advance from my pocket.
As an expression of my excitement and gratitude for your involvement in the project, I'm offering some nifty perks. These include a rare Ghost Lights demo EP, music lessons, astrology readings, poems written just for you on vintage maps, stickers...and the book itself. I've tried to make the perks as unique to the project as possible - it would make me really happy to personally give back to those that are supporting me here.
I aim to print the books in the last week of September, providing the campaign is doing well. I have secured a proof of the project from a reputable and efficient Montréal printing house (Rubiks), so printing would take 2 - 4 days maximum.
For the official launch, I have booked the beautiful Casa del Popolo in Montréal for Friday, October 3rd, 2014. I'll do some selected readings from the book, and then I will play a set with my band, Ghost Lights. Following us will be a very gifted poet and bandleader, John Jacob Magistery.
For more info, check out Facebook.
After the launch, I will set about fulfilling perks. Because Kickstarter has a 2 week window to clear all pledges and funds, perk fulfillment realistically would be between the second half of October and end of November. I will obviously do everything in my power to expedite the delivery of perks.
Publishing a book will aid me in my continuing quest to create many kinds of art that speaks of depth and passion. This is important step in my career as a multi-disciplinary artist. Successfully publishing The Winter of My Mind will give me great momentum toward my next major efforts and will allow me to share my ideas and perspectives with an even greater number of open ears and eyes.
To conclude, thank you for reading this far! Thank you for showing interest in supporting poetry and the contemplative arts. Any support you can give, whether it be moral, monetary, or simply sharing the campaign with other art lovers over social media, email and in conversation - any and all of it would mean so much to me.
Risks and challenges
I am navigating the self-publishing world for the first time with the release of this book, so invariably there will be obstacles and details I haven't thought to plan for. However, this book has been a work in progress and planning for the last 9 months, so I am confident that I will be able to work through any challenges that may arise. Because the book is already formatted and ready to print, and in the hands of a very reputable printing house, it is really just a question of raising the funds, and then guaranteeing efficient fulfilment of perks. For thisI may recruit others on my team to help with the process, depending on the scope of mailings we'll have to do. In any case, from my previous experience in organizing tours, radio campaigns for records, festival and grant applications, I believe in my ability to complete this campaign in all aspects.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
