This deck started off as a personal project that combined two things I was interested in: illustration and tarot. As the deck came together and friends who saw the cards commented on how cool it would be to have a copy, I started to think that bringing it to life might actually be possible.
To me birds have always been meaningful, and I hope that the species I chose and the stories they carry with them from around the world can make them meaningful to others too. The title of the deck and the inclusion of the extra card come from the poem of the same name written by Farid al-Din Attar, a Sufi poet from the 12th century, and actually came much later than the idea for the deck itself, after the rest of the cards were completed. So after months of drawing and writing up the guide, I present to you The Conference of the Birds Tarot.
I chose Kickstarter as the platform for launching this project because of how it connects creators to backers. This project was meaningful to me and I wanted a way to get people involved and excited in its final stretch.
Kickstarter's system also minimizes risk for both the creator and the backer: You'll only be charged if and when the campaign is successful after 30 days. If the campaign ends without reaching its goal you don't lose any of your investment.
The Good Stuff
The deck will be printed on gloss cardstock and come in a custom tuckbox. The tuckbox design isn’t finalized just yet but it will be completed and posted before the funding period ends.
The guide will be printed as a 44-page saddle bound booklet, and will include two common tarot spreads as well as two I created and use personally. Each card is listed with the species represented on it, a short description of the card’s meaning, and, where possible, a fact about the bird species. The guide has been written and is currently being edited and formatted.
In addition to those two, there are the print and the stickers. The prints will be 8.5 x 11” and printed on archival paper and the stickers will be 1.5” tall and made of high-quality vinyl.
Add-ons are available for all tiers with the prices listed below:
- 2 Stickers $3
- 8.5 x 11” Print $10
- Species Guide $15
- Deck $30
To add one of these to your pledge, add the amount to your pledge without changing your tier and at the end of the campaign, you'll be able to put which ones you want in the survey.
The funding will be split up between production, shipping, and fees. Production here includes shipping from the manufacturers, Shipping is from me to you, the backers!
Production can be further broken down into the decks, guides, stickers, and prints. The companies I’ve contacted and plan to work with for the decks and guides are both women-owned businesses certified by the WBENC. The prints will be made by hand on archival paper, and the stickers are will be produced by a company I’ve worked with before and have produced quality products.
*Custom Art is listed as 0% as the cost for supplies is very small compared to the other components.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter project, however, I've managed other large projects before and I feel confident that I can deliver the deck on time. I'm dedicated to seeing this project come to life!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
