What do you do in the time between playing your favourite tabletop games?  How do you get your 'fix'?  I know - I feel it too... that hollowness where you just want to open a box and look at the precious things inside.  That's why I'm printing this beautiful coffee table style book, filled with pictures of over 48 different games and game store locations!

Double page layouts
Double page layouts

There are two key groups I'm aiming this book at:

  • Existing gamers: to give you a stunning book that you can flick through between the times you're actually playing the game.  It might introduce you to new games or simply be a great addition to your collection.
  • Prospective gamers: those people who know gamers and might have played a game or two, but don't really know how amazing the wider tabletop gaming hobby can be.  Here they can quickly get a feel for the richness of the styles, themes, mechanics and artwork before committing their life savings to starting their own collection.

What's it all about?

Each game will be spread across 4 pages, with an introduction image listing the name of the tabletop game, the year of release, the designer and artist(s).  Next is a double page spread showing the game at play, illustrating the components and artwork in stunning detail.  Additionally, we provide a short summary about the game, a picture of the box (so you can go grab one!) and information about game time, player numbers and target age.

Below is the base list of games that I plan to include, before any stretch goals, and those with an asterisk (*) have already been photographed:

Game List
Game List

These games have been selected as they really showcase the breadth of game types (e.g. cooperative, bluffing, miniature supported, discovery, etc) and the wide set of components (e.g. cards, tokens, tiles) that go into modern games.  Many of these games are also ideal for families.

In addition to the tabletop games themselves, I have already lined up some stretch goal content to include interviews with game designers, artists, key tabletop gaming events and more!

I'm aiming to produce an awesome book of over 240 pages, assuming we hit the stretch goals!

Book Specifications

The book will be 11-inches x 8-inches, with 157gsm cover and 140gsm internal pages.  Throughout we will have a matt finish, with a hardcover bound finish.

The digital copy will contain exactly the same content as the hard cover book.

Game retailers

I have included some options for retailers within the pledge levels.  All retail pledges include a single listing in the book for the name of their store, their state/ county/ region, country and web address, for example:

   Jake's Awesome Game Store
   New Jersey, USA
   www.jakesgames.eg

I think anything that helps people to quickly find a store to buy games, is probably a good thing for tabletop gaming as a whole.  Retailers will be listed by country, state/ region and then company name.

Stretch Goals

Goal 1: Facebook Page Likes
Goal 1: Facebook Page Likes

 1.  800 Facebook likes for thru-the-portal:  Unlocks a summary page at the end of the book that lists the games with related info (e.g. number of players, play time, game type, etc)

Shipping

For the US and most EU countries we have included shipping in the price of the backing level.  Unfortunately we have not been able to do this for all countries, but have been able to discount the usual shipping fees to these countries as a result.

About me

I have been collecting tabletop games since 2007 and I have almost 250 of them.  In 2010 my wife and I produced a free quarterly online magazine, thru-the-portal, which had around 12,000 unique downloads for each issue.

We were very fortunate to get into this amazing hobbyist community and met some interesting people along the way.  I've been very frustrated that there aren't any good books that really promote modern tabletop games, which has inspired me to publish one.

Risks and challenges

In 2010 my wife and I produced a set of quarterly ezines focused on gaming, so we have some experience at that side of publishing. Ahead of the campaign I have also reviewed several book publishers and I am confident of the quality and capability of the partners we're talking with to produce a great product.

I have already taken high quality photographs for many of the games, and don't anticipate any delays in doing the rest.

I am aiming to have all books printed and ready for dispatch by early September, so that they should be delivered to 95% of people by the end of September.

Finally, the budget also includes costs for external proofreading and editor review of the finished product before it goes to press.

As a project manager, with over 15 years experience, I am confident that the risks in delivering this book have been well considered and are relatively low.
