A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
NJspots App: Find Your Spot.
When I started NJspots in 2015, it was only an Instagram account. There are really cool places in New Jersey that a lot of people don’t know about, and I created NJspots to show off amazing images to smash stereotypes about New Jersey. As time went on, I no longer was the one creating NJspots — you were. Over 243,000 #NJspots Instagram posts later, you have helped show off the best spots in New Jersey.
Today, NJspots has grown to over 31,000 community members sharing images, videos, and stories — but we need to do more to fill the void of discovering new places throughout the Garden State.
- Virginia, Founder of NJspots
Where We Got The Idea
When NJspots first started, Instagram allowed users to view places that photos were taken on a map, and this helped our community find spots nearby. When this feature was discontinued in 2016, it was important to us to find a way to help provide a resource like that again.
Enter NJspots Maps.In May 2018, we launched several maps on our website with waterfalls, sunset spots, lighthouses, hiking trails, sunrise vistas, and so much more to encourage you to find your spot. But this was just the beginning.
An App Made From A Map
NJspots App is all about finding your spot on the go. Whether you’re adventuring with friends, heading to the beach with family, or looking to capture that perfect sunrise, the app will allow you to access the maps and spots around our state on your iPhone or Android device. You can discover new places to check out while you’re out exploring.
Features on the NJspots App:
Several Filters for Different Spots & Interests
Easy Navigation Directly with Google Maps
Further Details like Picture, Description, & Resource Link for Spots
Ability to Submit Your Own Spot to be Added To the App
Share Spots with Friends Directly Through the App
[Phase 2] Notifications When New Spots Are Added In Your Area
[Phase 2] Favorite A Spot To Save To Your Bucket List
The Types of Spots & Filter Options:
Outdoor Sights - Explore the outdoors with parks, hiking, & more
Our app is built with you in mind — your passions, your places, your spots. With several layers of map options to cater to your interests, the NJspots App will allow you to filter through a number of different spots right in your neighborhood. Looking to go for a drive? Discover other spots around the state that you never knew existed.
How It's Going To Work & Why We Need Your Help
When building the app, we’ll be rolling it out in two phases. The first phase will allow you to begin using the maps and viewing all the spots across the state — learning more about spots with pictures, details, and resource links. During phase two, we’ll cater it more to your specific interests. You’ll then begin to receive notifications of new spots added in your area and favorite spots that you’ll want to visit on your bucket list.
We want to thank our kind and generous collaborators that are helping with our Kickstarter campaign and our app.

How Our Budget Will Be Used
Our budget for NJspots is broken down with a few factors in mind. The majority of the budget will be allocated towards the development costs of the app, to create the design of the app, the database, server, any troubleshooting in the first phases of publication, and other work regarding the app to be fully functional for our audience. A smaller portion (and remaining) of the budget will be allocated towards the marketing of the app to the NJspots community and New Jersey region which will include, but not limited to social media ads, search marketing ads, and print ads.
Huge thanks go out to the following Team Members for their great help in creating this Kickstarter Campaign!
Risks and challenges
Some challenges that we may run into are not being able to easily convert the spots into the database quick enough. However, we are working with app developers to find the easiest and most functional way to combat these possible issues.
Also, from the beginning, the user functionality has been important to us. Making sure that the user experience is easy and simple. It can be difficult to load a lot of data at once on an app for so many interests. We are keeping it easier for users to be able to filter through their interests for different spots, so it's easier to navigate.
Some other challenges we face are not being able to get the word out enough to new people to help the project reach our goal. We are working on making more media and local business connections in the New Jersey area to help spread the word. Also, we are going to be using some advertising dollars to help spread the word through our already established community.
