Adults and children alike enjoy coloring. So, what if you could turn your coloring projects into 3-D Shapes too? Our 3-D Geometrics Coloring and Logic Puzzles Book includes over 40 (single sided) detailed 3-Dimensional Designs. Color the 2-Dimensional Net, cut it out, fold it up and glue it together.
As you color each page, work through one of three different logic puzzles to uncover the mystery behind 3-D geometry. You will answer questions such as: What shape will this 2-Dimensional net make? What is a vertex? an edge? a face? What attributes do various prisms, pyramids and platonic solids possess? How can I use this to derive my own equations for surface area and volume? You will also discover amazing patterns, line symmetry and rotational symmetry. When you finish coloring and assembling all 40 designs, you will possess heightened spatial reasoning skills and an in-depth understanding of geometry.
The 9 inch by 12 inch coil bound book will be printed on 100# matte, un-coated, white cover stock. This paper is perfect for every medium -- markers, colored pencils, gel pens and even watercolors! Designs are single sided to avoid problems with bleeding and to allow for assembly.

The Math Behind the Coloring
3D Geometric Coloring and Logic Puzzles began as a math manipulative for our classrooms at HEROES Academy. We realized that students could spit out memorized formulas to solve for the surface area of 3-D Geometric shapes but they had no idea what they meant or where they came from. By coloring, folding, and manipulating the 2-Dimensional nets, the students were able to gain an in-depth understanding of geometric shapes. As students created their own designs, they were able to apply, and understand the relationship of, rotational and line symmetry from previous lessons.
Our original lessons contained simplistic designs with circles on the vertices and columns along the edges, as you will see in the beginning lessons of this book. This was a great introduction but we wanted to expand the lesson and manipulative to create something the students would continue to work on at home in their spare time. So, the designing began! I released a couple of designs, similar to the ones in this book, to our students and they fell in love. Students were, and still are, asking for geometry 'homework' to bring home!
Then, the parents started to ask for them! Adult coloring books are currently the best selling books on the market. This coloring book lets both adult and children enjoy their coloring in a new creative way. We've found that the 3-D shapes make great ornaments and decorations too!

The sparkle in a child's eyes that accompanies a "Aha" moment is my addiction. As I prepare each lesson, I ponder ways to bring the concept to life, to make it real to each student. at times that may require building a beanstalk number line, sending a student on an imaginary Segway tour, or making a game.
I do not believe in giving students formulas to memorize or to allow them to use formulae or procedures that they do not understand. For my 5th grade and pre-algebra geometry lessons, I wanted students to develop their own formulae for surface area and volume. Even with the use of K'nex, Geo-Shapes and other geometry manipulatives, some students still had difficulty visualizing how specific nets would be be transformed into 3-Dimensional shapes.
I created nets with circles at their vertices and columns along their edges to create a new logic puzzle. I spent my vacation coloring and modge-podging these nets to hang throughout the classroom.
Students loved these! Even students from other classes asked for copies to take home. I was thrilled with the outcome, but that didn't mean that I couldn't find a way to further improve the project. There are multiple nets for every 3D solid. For example, there are 11 unique nets for a cube. I wanted to be able to distinguish between cubes assembled using different nets. This exceeded by capabilities using Paint and Microsoft Word. So, I enlisted the help of my daughter, Danielle -- my business partner, school librarian and language arts teacher. Danielle worked as a graphic designer for a local printer before she was even old enough to drive. This project suddenly took on an entirely new life. Soon, we had nets with mandalas, gardens, fireworks, stars and even Pokemon. Each weekend, students now rush to the library after class to find her newest creations. As the school librarian, Danielle strives to put books in each child's hand that will transform "Did you do your 15 minutes of reading?" into "Stop reading and go to sleep!" As the math teacher, I strive to connect children to the beauty of logic that is the core of math, to help them see the rules of math not as confusing constraints but as guides to use for their own creations. Our children live in a 3D world but are increasingly learning in the flat world of 2D screens. Today, many children type and text but do not cut, fold or paste. Risks and challenges
We have already designed and edited the majority of the designs for this project. We have a complete sample book, printed and bound on the same paper that we will be publishing with. The major risk with this project is the printing timeline. I have estimated the delivery for February 2017 which allows for a buffer in case the printer is late to deliver the material. We are using Alphagraphics for publishing. I've been working with this printer for a number of years.
