Howdy, I'm Ken Eppstein, Publisher of Nix Comics. Nix Comics is a publisher in Columbus, Ohio that specializes in comic books that can sell as well in a record shop or hip gift boutique as in a comic shop. I am trying to raise the fund necessary to produce two new projects that will be released on national record store day next year.
The first book being funded is a collected edition of Darren Merinuk's Rockin' Bones comics in Nix's signature pocket TPB size. Darren is one of the premier punk, garage and surf artists in the world, who has done 100s of picture sleeves, album jackets and gig posters for bands all over the world. His Rockin' Bones comics, rife with pin-up girls, monsters and greasy rock idols are inspired by inspired by Cramps records, b-movies and teenage humor mags, are a lost gem of the 90s B&W comic explosion. This collected edition in the Nix Comics 5"x7.5" Pocket sized format will be 120 Pages long including original the original Rockin' Bones material, some new material, Darren's memories about getting started in comics and an intro by Roctober Magazine's Jake Austen.
The second project is the Pander Bear: I Want You To Want Nix Comic and Record Set. Pander Bear is the fictional Nix Comics mascot and pitch man, who I co-created with Bob Ray Starker. Basically, the character was created to provide a voice for all of the negative, nasty, crass and generally non-viable feelings I have towards doing self promotion and branding. He was a real fan favorite, but Bob and I had to put the strip on hiatus when we both ran short on money and time.
The book will print relettered, cleaned up and annotated versions of the original webcomic run, reprint his wholesale catalog appearance only see previously by retailers and include a 7" record by cartoonist Matt Wyatt's new band... dubbed the Unbearables. (Produced by Nick Schuld.)

WHERE DOES THE $11,000 GO?:
Some people have asked why I chose such an ambitious Kickstarter campaign goal. I think that’s a fair question and one that I am willing to address. Here’s how things break down Budget wise:
Printing and Record Pressing $3,760
Artist & Contributor Pay $3,500
Swag Budget $740
Amazon and Kickstarter Fees $1,100
Printing and Record Pressing: This number is for printing costs of both books and pressing the record. It also includes ancillary production costs like the plastic sleeves that comic and record set will have to be packaged in and paying for licensing rights for the cover songs.
Artist & Contributor Pay: One of the most basic tenets I try to stick to when putting a Nix Comics project is “Everybody gets paid.” Darren Merinuk will be paid for the use of his creator owned Rockin’ Bones material. Bob Ray Starker will be paid for use material he created a while back for me at no charge and for co-creating Pander Bear. Matt Wyatt’s band, the Unbearables, will get paid for their songs on the record. My social media coordinator Reed Moore Goodcomics (his real name as far as I know) will get paid for busting his ass. The social media team he has assembled will get Nix Comics merch in trade for their help. And yes, I have budgeted a slice for myself. You get great comics and everybody involved in getting them to you gets paid. That’s fair, right?
Shipping: The cost of postage and shipping materials like mailers and tape. This was the hardest budget item to estimate. Darren has a lot of Canadian and European fans and international shipping has gotten really expensive. Budgeting improperly could really put me on the spot. $1900 should be about right, but if it’s low, I should be able to make up the difference out of my own pocket. If I’ve estimated high, the contributors and I will take a look at the left over and decide the best way to divvy things up.
Swag Budget: The costs of making stickers and prints, as well as the cost of shipping items that require Darren’s signature back and forth between Columbus and Winnipeg.
Amazon and Kickstarter Fees: I suppose in my “everybody gets paid” philosophy, I ought to leave room for the people who make the platform work, huh?
Risks and challenges
The risks are fairly minimal with this project. Assuming it funds, this will be my 6th successful kickstarter and I have fulfilled all promises to date. The art is already complete with exception of some pages that need to be relettered and the songs for comic and record set are ready to go to press.
Only the unforeseeable can cause bumps, but rest assured that I appreciate you sending Nix your hard earned dough and will fulfill my commitments no matter what.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
