There is a great scene in the Ramones Documentary "End of the Century" where Dee Dee Ramone talks about how listening to records in pre-MTV days. He waxed about how a person would just lay back with eyes closed and imagine stories that went with the music. (At least that's what I took away from it!)
The comics and zines I publish with Nix Comics very much come from a similar inspiration. They are stories informed by my years of love for punk rock bands, record store and b-movies. for this kickstarter I am offering two subscription levels: Basic and De-Luxe.
Basic subscribers will receive 7 printed comic books and zines: Nix Comics Quarterly. Nix Western Comics, Jenny Mae & Jerry Wick, Buck Slaughter's Book of Rock N Roll Facts, the Collected Pander Bear, Tales From The Crate and Return of Belligerent Kitties. US Subscribers will receive their books in May, July and September. International subscribers will receive their complete subscription in September.
De-Luxe subscribers will receive 7 printed comic books and zines: Nix Comics Quarterly. Nix Western Comics, Jenny Mae & Jerry Wick (comic and record set), Buck Slaughter's Book of Rock N Roll Facts, the Collected Pander Bear (comic and record set), Tales From The Crate and Return of Belligerent Kitties and the 120 page art and poetry collection, Beauty Found in Darkness. US Subscribers will receive their books in May, July and September. International subscribers will receive their complete subscription in September.
Not into the subscription thing? You can still pick up individual issues!
Nix Comics Quarterly #10: The "flagship" title of Nix Comics is an anthology in the same format of pre-code horror horror comics like Tales from the Crypt. Each issues has 6 or more stories inspired and informed by rock music and record store culture. The tenth issue of the Nix Comics flagship title will be a 28 page, full color comic with the following stories:
- Eddie & Squid Return from the Dead by Ken Eppstein and Gideon Kendall:The outlaw bikers who learned the truth about the afterlife in issue #4 make their return when summoned back from the dead by a vengeful police detective.
- The Vicar: Night of A 1000 Eyes by Ken Eppstein and Michael Neno: A strange noise that only the Vicar can hear is permeating a suburban development. As he and his guitarist Alberto approach the source, they soon find that they are being watched by an unearthly presence!
- The Vicar by Michael Neno
- Ana Satsura Meets Josephine Six-Fifteen by ken Eppstein & Pat Redding Scanlon: The world's greatest sinner stops off for a drink at a honky tonk only to get caught up defending a struggling young artist modern from country music squares and a creature from hell!
- Bus Stop Ned Is Off The Grid by Matt Miner and Matt LeJeune: Ever get the feeling you're being watched? Ned does... ALL THE TIME...
- Did It Really Happen: Klaus Nomi Plays The Midwest by Ken Eppstein & Mark Rudolph: What happens when Contra Tenor Klaus Nomi, beloved by fans of David Bowie and the New York City Art Scene, gets stuck at an Ohio nightclub? Probably not what you think!
- Bus Stop Ned Is Worried About His Appearance : Hey, you may think that it's easy to look as suave as Ned does at the bus stop every morning, but sometimes he needs a little reaffirmation from his fellow commuters...
Nix Western Comics #4: Nix Western Comics is a spaghetti western themed collection of stories that takes advantage of the out of time quality of period pieces by telling the stories of two protagonists who died in conflict with each other in issue #1. Nix Western Comics #4 is a 24 page color comic book. This issue will be the (for now) final stories about the two main characters: Sheriff Earl Vance and outlaw Johnny Skell.
- Nightmare by Ken Eppstein and Bob Ray Starker: What drives a maniac like Johnny Skell to become a killer? Take a trip with him through the ether and find out!
- Touched in the Head by Ken Eppstein and Rich Trask: A modern day writer is researching Earl Vance and New Stockholm by reading her Great-Great-Aunt Mae's letters, which are so vividly written as to transport her back to the old west.
Jenny Mae & Jerry Comic & Record Set :
The third and final comic book in the series of adaptations of the writings of Bela Koe Krompecher. In this 24 page B&W comic, Bela reflects on his friendships with late musicians Jerry Wick and Jenny Mae.
Thanks to Anyway Records, this issue will be available in standard and deluxe versions. (withthe De-Luxe featuring a record featuring the unreleased song "To Love" by Jenny Mae and "Love Death & Photosynthesis" by Jerry Wick, which previously has only been released on the Anyway Records CD comp titled " I Stayed Up All Night Listening to Records")

Collected Pander Bear Comic & Record Set:
From 2011 to 2012, the Nix Comics website featured a gag comic about the somewhat despicable Nix Comics mascot and spokesman, Pander Bear. Basically, Pander bear was a creature from my Id bent on stooping to whatever scummy marketing trick he thought would sell some comics.
The book will print relettered, cleaned up and annotated versions of the original webcomic run, reprint his wholesale catalog appearance only seen previously by retailers.
The Collected Pander bear is available with and without a 7" record by cartoonist Matt Wyatt's band... dubbed the Unbearables for this release. (Produced by Nick Schuld.)

I Want You To Want Nix:
I'm An Evil Bear:
Tales from the Crate #4:What happens when I go to a record sale with $50 in my pocket? That's the question I try to answer in every issue of Tales from the Crate. In this issue I examine a bonanza of garage rock and power pop 45s found on a trip to Columbus's quarterly record show hosted by Colleen's collectibles.
The Return of Belligerent Kitties:
I regret to announce the return of Nix Comics' best selling zine... Which is fitting since it's a total sell out! Whereas other Nix titles are thoughtful pieces informed by music, b-movie and record store culture, Belligerent Kitties just plays to what people want... Pictures of cute cats spewing hateful soundbites. It's not the comic I want to make, but it's the comic you deserve!
Beauty Found in Darkness:
This year's most ambitious project is Beauty Found In Darkness, an art book featuring the Haiku of Nix Comics cover contributor, painter and musician Kent Grosswiler paired with visual interpretations by his artistic comrades Rob Jones and Alli MacGregor. While not a comic or zine, this 128 page color book pushes the perimeters of both.
Buck Slaughter's Book of Rock N Roll Facts #3 by Ken Eppstein Buck Slaughter is the owner of the smallest and saddest record store in town... and that's how he likes it! Too bad success is starting to come his way thanks to the support of his two enthusiastic regular customers. Buck Slaughter's Book of Rock n Roll Facts #3 is a 32 page B&W pamphlet sized comic book.

Risks and challenges
I have based my goal for this campaign based on my hope to get 200 or more subscribers for 2018. This is approximately double the number of subscribers I have had in the past and will take new levels and methods of outreach.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
