About this project
"Ken Eppstein is a comix force of nature. He and his NIX co-conspirators crank out great books at a rate that makes slow-moving scribblers like myself look like the hipster slugs we are. These are comix made for the love of comix. You can't go wrong when you start at that karmic spot!" – Derf Backderf: My Friend Dahmer, Trashed, Punk Rock Trailer Parks
"Nix rocks! Any comic that has the "Stones" to put Brian Jones on the cover is something I want to rave about!" -Michael Allred: Madman, Atomics, Red Rocket 7, iZombie
"These comics are serious about being fun in the way comics used to be." -Michael Kupperman: Tales Designed To Thrizzle, The Autobiography of Mark Twain 1910-2010
"Ken has the fire in the belly - - for comix AND for Columbus! Go Nix Comics!"
-Jeff Smith: Bone, RASL
What Is Nix Comics?
Nix Comics is a small indie comics publisher in Columbus, Ohio, specializing in tried and true pulp genres now overlooked by a mainstream comic market dominated by conventional superhero fare and corporate advertising power.
To date Nix has published four issues of Nix Comics Quarterly and one issue of each Nix Western Comics, Nix Comics for Kids and Astonishing Tech Tales (The latter for Columbus based IT service provider, Network Logix).
Have a look! It'll give you a feel for what you're signing up for!
In addition, watch for Artist Previews for Nix Comics Quarterly #5 at nixcomics.com!
Why the Big Ask?
I don't think that it's a big secret that the number one impediment to small press publishing on a regular basis is a lack of funds. I've done okay so far on my own; I'm a local success and word about Nix is starting to spread beyond the Columbus community. Left to my own devices, I'd manage to churn out two or three more comics in 2013.
But you know what? I don't want to "do okay."
In fact, I wanna drag OK out in middle of the street and run it over with multiple truck loads of awesome! Then, I want to hire the Fleshtones to throw a super rock dance party on Okay's grave. I want to hire a whole mess of artists, make a ton of comics and hustle them into stores across this country. I need your help to do that!
If the Kickstarter goal is achieved, this is the anticipated release schedule:
Additionally, if all goals are met, Nix Comics for Kids #2 will be funded out of my own pocket and available for purchase for those of you with young ‘uns.
Nix Comics has achieved so much over the past two years, but there is still so much to do! With your help, I’ll be able to put out at least seven new comic books and have money left over to market them as well as they deserve!
HOW THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT:
A question frequently asked by Kickstarter skeptics is 'Where will all of this money go?" In this case, nearly 40% of the money brought in will go towards paying the artists involved in Nix Projects. I'm a firm believer in publishers paying artists as much as possible up front. I'm a firm believer in publishers paying artists as much as possible up front.
Another 40% will go towards the steps necessary to getting the books into the hands of fans (printing, shipping, packaging, etc.), 10% will be used to pay Kickstarter and Amazon Payments fees and a final 10% will go towards marketing Nix Comics!
Another 40% roughly will go towards the steps necessary to getting the books into the hands of fans (printing, shipping, packaging, etc.) and 10% each towards the Kickstarter and Amazon Payments fees and a final 10% towards marketing Nix Comics!
This is of course a rough cut, estimates based on my years of experience as an on-line retailer, non-profit program administrator and self publisher. You may follow how money is being spent via links at the bottom of the "About" page at http://nixcomics.com/about.html
ON TAP FOR 2013:
What stories are going to be offered in NCQ in 2013? Well, it's an open submission magazine, so it's hard to say for sure this early in the game. (Heck, maybe your story will appear in an issue!) One thing is for sure, though: Every issue will have one story about the monster hunting Vicar and everybody's favorite public transit rant-machine, Bus Stop Ned

Call me an optimist... Heck, call me presumptuous... But I hope that the high goal of $25,000 for this campaign will be exceeded. A lot of comic campaigns offer additional doo-dads like stickers or buttons when certain milestones over the main goal have been reached. Others, variations on the product itself... Like upgrading all of the comics into a hardcover or oversized edition. I don’t know about you... But I have enough doo-dads lying around the house and I just love me some good old fashioned floppy comic books! So here’s my stretch goal pledge to you: For every $3000 past the main goal, I will publish another full length comic book. Everybody who signs up for a full ride subscription will automatically receive this comic book.
More comics. More artists getting paid. More fun for everybody!
What stretch goal titles will get published? I’ll let the subscribers decide in a poll immediately after the Kickstarter ends! Options will include:
Nix Strange Love Comics:
Crazy kids from all over the map seek love in this strange modern world in twin tales of amore so wrong that they have to be right! Thrill to tales like “I Uploaded My Baby” where a young scientist encodes her dead lover’s psyche on to her home computer and “Why Can’t I Marry This Monkey?” in which a lawyer argues for the most rights of love and marriage for the super intelligent Jo-Jo the Bonobo!
Nix Noir Comics:
Life is tough for former college football star turned private dick with a limp, Jet Matthews. Nothing but a gin-blurred swirl of cheaters, killers and curs. And that’s just his client list! In Issue #1 Jet helped track down the original contract for 60s girl group phenom Calliope Green, unraveling the sordid history of gamblers, mobsters and corporate thugs.
Nix Space Adventure Comics
Tired of the oh-so-dark and serious sci-fi of today? Return to the days of rockets ‘n rayguns with Nix Space Adventure Comics! Can astronaut and adventurer Deke Ventura and his crew stop the invading aliens from a planet orbiting the fabled binary Nemesis Star?
Nix True Crime Comics: Hall of Lame

Nix Cooking Comics

Hi-Jinks in the Supermarket, food fights at the dinner table and best of all… Recipe cards! Eat yer heart out, Food Network! Issue #1: “Buck’s BBQ Feast!”
Risks and challenges
Publishing six or more full length comic books would be no small feat. Organizing a dozen or more artists, writing and editing the scripts, shipping out the books, soliciting sales, wrangling the printers... It’s all a lot of work and requires a lot of planning and work to be done on a relatively small budget. (Even if the kickstarter goes through!)
I know that it ends up being more than a lot of comic creators can handle, as they are usually more experienced with writing and illustration than program planning. I also know that I’ve spent the last twenty years studying to be a comic book publisher without even knowing it at the time.
As a non-profit program administrator and a small business veteran, I know how to plan large programs on a limited budget and how to hustle for more funds if things run short. For many years I ran my own website selling collectible punk/garage rock records, so I am an expert with shipping and customer service. In short, I can see most of the potential pitfalls with each step of the process and keep a level head for problem solving for the pitfalls I miss.
Above all else, I know what it’s like to be broke and how to treat money.
I know full well that if you’ve pledged for my kickstarter, it’s with money you’ve worked hard to earn. I feel obligated to fulfill all the promises I’ve made in return for that hard earned dough… And to do so in a timely and rewarding manner.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
