Yokai Septet is a 3 to 4 player trick-taking game about capturing Yokai, spirits that appear in Japanese folklore. When playing with 4 players, the game is played in 2 vs 2 partnership, whereas when playing with 3 players, the game is played free-for-all.

If you read nothing else, then here is a 60-second overview of the game.

  • You will have a hand of cards, and you will play 1 card each turn.
  • The first player of each turn can play any card from their hand.
  • Remaining players in clockwise order play a card of the same suit as the first player. If you don't have a card of the same suit, then you can play any card.
  • The player who played the highest card of the same suit as the first player's card wins that turn and takes cards played that turn.
  • The goal of the game is to win four or more value 7 cards, before winning seven times!

In Yokai Septet, your goal is to capture high scoring Boss Yokai by strategically playing cards from your hand. Each turn (called a "trick"), players play a card from their hand following the rules of the "trick-taking games." What this means is that the first player of each turn can play any card from their hand. Remaining players in clockwise order must play a card of the same suit as the first player. If they don't have a card of the same suit, then they get to play any card from their hand.

After everyone has played a card, the player who played the strongest card matching the suit of the first player's card takes all the cards played this turn. A new turn continues until one of the round's end condition is met. At the end of the round, the winner of that round is determined.

In a 4-player game, the game is played as a team battle of two players versus two players, whereas in a 3-player game, all players play individually competing. The winner of the round is the team that captured four or more Boss Yokai in a 4-player game, and three or more Boss Yokai in a 3-player game.

The winner of the round scores points based on the Boss Yokai they captured. New rounds are played until the game's end condition is met, which can be either 2 points for a basic game or 7 points for an advanced game.

Here is a quick overview of how a four-player game is played.

1) At the start of the game, you will divide into 2 teams of 2 players. Teammates sit across from each other.

2) Each round you will be dealt a hand of 12 cards.

3) The one remaining card is revealed to everyone. This card establishes the trump suit for this round.

4) Carefully analyze your cards and decide on 3 cards to pass to your partner. You and your partner trade the chosen cards at the same time.

4) You will then play your cards in a series of turns called "tricks". The first card played each trick establishes a suit, and all other players must match that suit if they can.

5) The highest valued card of that suit takes the trick... unless someone played a trump suit card!

6) The round ends and the winner is determined when a team collected four or more 7's, a team took 7 tricks, or players have played all twelve cards in their hand.

Yokai Septet is a category of a game called Trick-Taking Games. There are a ton of trick-taking games in the world, such as Hearts, Bridge, and so on. In fact, Board Game Geek lists over 1000 games categorized as a trick-taking game! So how is Yokai Septet different?

Collecting 7's

In this game, it isn't all about winning the trick, but instead, it's about collecting the 7's. Winning tricks without 7's aren't really beneficial for you. Therefore, you need to be very strategic on which trick to win, and when to play your 7's!

7 suits, 7 cards

The game uses a deck of 49 cards. There are 7 suits, and each suit has 7 cards. Each suit has a different range in their values, for example, Wind suit has cards of values A through 7, whereas Fire suit has cards of values 4 through 10.

Each suit has a card of value 7, and the goal of the game is to collect these cards. However, since the range of values is different between suits, the relative strengths of 7 are different between suits.

For example, in a suit with values 2 through 8, 7 is the second strongest card. But, in a suit with values 7 through 13, 7 is the weakest card. You will need to strategically play your cards so that you can win the 7's!

Partnership

In a 4-player game, this game is played as a 2 versus 2. This means that you will need to coordinate with your partner to win the game. It is no longer about how you can win the 7's, but how you and your partner can work together to win the 7's!

Two Scoring Rules

The game comes with two scoring rules to accommodate beginner and advanced trick-taking players.

In the basic scoring rules, simply collect as many 7's as you can to win the game. The team (or the player, in a 3-player game) with the most 7's score 1 point. The game is over when 1 team (or 1 player) scored 2 points.

In the advanced scoring rules, you will need to pay attention to which 7's you take as they have different point values. Each 7's have a point value between 0 and 2 points (0 and 3 points for 3-player games).

The game is over when a team (or a player) scores a total of 7 or more points.

Please check the rulebook for details on scoring rules and for more examples!

Will I be charged VAT / GST / Customs duty?

While we cannot guarantee you that you will not be charged a VAT / GST / Customs duty, the most strict threshold for VAT / GST we found is $10. For most countries in EU, the threshold is around $22. Our invoice price for the game is way lower than that since we are covering part of the shipping. So we cannot guarantee that you won't be hit with VAT / GST / Customs duty, but we are pretty sure you will be fine.

Sweets Stack is a competitive puzzle game where your goal is to overfill your opponent’s candy buckets first while cleverly placing candies into your bucket to prevent it from overflowing.

Each round you will start with a new candy bucket sheet. Players will be passing around candy cards and each player must mark the shape of the candy they receive in their candy bucket sheet. If you plan well and stuff your candies efficiently you will be able to put many candies in your bucket. Each candy you successfully put in your bucket will score you points.

After three rounds, each player adds up their total score, and the player with the highest score wins!

This is a Japanese game but includes English rulebook. Most components are language independent. Language dependent components have both Japanese and English texts.

Arkham Ritual is a deduction, bluffing, and press your luck card game about escaping from a horrific ritual worshiping the Great Old One.

In this game, you don’t see the card you are holding. Instead, you see the cards other players are holding. You must guess the card you are holding by looking at other players’ cards and the cards that have been played.

The game is played over a course of multiple rounds and each round consists of multiple turns. Each turn one player draws the top card of the deck, looks at it, and passes it to another player. The player who receives the card has a choice either to a) discard the card he / she is holding face up and take the new card without looking at it, or b) pass the card to another player without looking at it. After a player takes a turn, another player takes his / her turn.

The round continues until one of the round end conditions is met, at which point all players reveal their cards. At this time, if you are holding a cursed (red) card, then the card corrupts your mind and you lose sanity. If you are holding a sane (blue) artifact card but some other player is also holding the same artifact card (regardless of their color), the artifacts create unpleasant resonance and corrupt your mind, losing sanity. You successfully survive the ritual only if you are holding a unique sane (blue) card.

Players lose sanity by discarding sanity markers. The next round is played until one or more players have lost all their sanity markers. All players who still have sanity markers survived the ritual, and the winner is the player with the most sanity markers!

Shipping for Add-on

Add-on games will be shipped separately from Yokai Septet. US backers will have their games shipped from within the US. Everyone else will have their games shipped out from our international fulfillment partners.

Shipping cost for international backers is bit higher. We tried our best to keep it low but this is the best we can do.

These are shipping rates for add-on only. Rewards including the add-ons include these rates. If you would like to add add-ons to any other rewards, please add the shipping rates above.

  • By the end of November: Game arrives at your door!

Ninja Star Games has delivered 3 successful games, The Majority Complete Edition, Wolf & Hound, and Arkham Ritual over the past few years. However, we are still a very small company with a limited resource. Your support is crucial in publishing "Yokai Septet" at the highest production quality that we've always offered at a competitive price.

This game was previously released in Japan as "7 Nations, 7 Symbols" in a limited quantity. It was extremely well received among the Japanese community and trick-taking fans worldwide. We strongly believe that this is an excellent game that needs to be played by more people.

We have closely worked with the designer to redevelop the game as "Yokai Septet". We've also contracted a very talented illustrator and graphics designer to make the game visually compelling. We need your help in raising the fund necessary to publish and market the game to the international audience!

We are estimating that it will cost us about $8,000 total to manufacture this game and ship them to you. We have invested about $3,000 plus our time at no cost to the project already. We need the other $5,000 from you to bring this game to life!

Risks and challenges

This is our fourth Kickstarter with three successfully delivered games behind our back. There is no real said risk if we meet our funding goal. The game has been designed, developed, and released already in Japan, though in very limited quantity.

Anyone missing anything from our previous projects, please message us here on Kickstarter so that we can get you a replacement sent out. We've had thousands of backers from all over the world so it is possible that some of you fell through the crack.

The game will be manufactured in China, so there will be the usual risks in ocean freight delay, customs delay, shipping delay, and such that will be outside our control. This is why we have a conservative estimated delivery date.
