We are Proper Pie Co. and we are bringing the savory pie to RVA!
Hi there! Nikki from Proper Pie Co. here. Some of you out there might have heard of us, but for those that haven’t, or don’t know what we consider to be a proper pie; it is a delicious savory-style pie common in regions of the world like New Zealand and Australia. It’s a hand-sized, hand-held, handmade meat and/or veggie pie that can serve as a snack or a meal. Our goal is to bring that kind of pie to this part of the world, Richmond, Virginia.
It’s a crucial time and our goal for opening is just over a month away. There are still a few more major purchases to make, and commercial kitchen equipment is certainly not cheap. Plus, we need the most important part: ingredients! So we are reaching out to ask for your help.
Quite a number of folks have approached us and asked how they could help, and would we please do a Kickstarter campaign so that they could contribute? It feels a bit strange to be asking for money, but we hope you will think of it as contributing to your future happiness through PIE! Plus you will have the gratification of knowing that you helped make a dream become a reality for two very grateful people (and also, you get cool stuff!)
We really can’t wait to get our doors open and do what we do best, serve up some delicious pies with a smile! (And if you’re lucky Neil will call you mate and charm you with his kiwi accent!)
About Team NN:
Neil comes from New Zealand, but has spent the better part of the last 10 years traveling all over the place. Since moving away, besides missing his family and friends, he has really been pining for a taste of home. Back in New Zealand, if the pie craving struck, it would be easy to grab a pie just about anywhere. Not so much in this neck of the woods! However, it just so happens that Neil is a seriously great chef, and so has decided to take matters into his own hands.
Pretty much since the day we met, we have been talking about someday opening a place of our own. We’ve both been in the food business for quite some time, and so after 6 years of talking about it, we are finally making the leap. We’re going to open a pie shop of course! Over the last year, we’ve been working on perfecting our pie crusts and fillings to make our pies truly proper, and have had some great feedback from some very important pie-tasters (thanks guys!)
We have found a great location in Richmond’s historic Church Hill neighborhood, right near the corner of 25th and Broad, and we are hard at work turning it into a pie shop. We are working with a pretty small budget (and the help of some amazing friends and family--you know who you are and we love you!) and turning a virtually empty space into a commercial kitchen is no small task. But, we’re getting close. We have been madly searching for and buying the equipment that we need (most of which we’ve gotten used to make our dollars stretch as far as they can). We are priming and painting and wiring and plumbing and building and cleaning and ALL the other things that go along with an endeavor such as this. There are just so many things to think about and do!
Thank you so much for backing us, please help us spread the word! In the meantime, keep it Proper! xox
**Pie awards must be picked up at the shop. At this point we cannot ship pies.**
***Also, please add extra for any international shipping. And if you're overseas, or just far away, let's discuss some options to make you happy!***
****Special thanks to Daniel Wrightson for his famous and fabulous voice talents! (We're so lucky he's our brother-in-law!)****
