You asked for it, and you’re getting it: a gameplay demo of BLACKROOM.
The team is at work on a demo which demonstrates the kind of gameplay, look and innovative, cool features that make BLACKROOM truly unique — the things we’ve waited years to put into an FPS and which make us incredibly excited about this game.
There’s a hitch here, a hitch that’s making us do something that’s right for the game, the team, and the community: we’re pressing “PAUSE” on the fundraising campaign for BLACKROOM to complete this gameplay demo. Simply put, this will take more time than the Kickstarter has left, so we’ve decided to suspend the campaign and launch a new one when the gameplay demo is ready. We believe, however, it is the right choice. We know you do, too. Thanks to your feedback, we know we should have included it at launch.
To all of our backers: your support has been incredible and valuable. We will, of course, honor backer achievements in the next campaign (and an extra something for those of you who continue to support us in the next campaign).
While we're working on the first gameplay demo, we welcome you to stay in touch with us at nightworkgames.com and @nightworkgames. Sign up for our newsletter for regular updates. You’re also welcome to email us at info@nightworkgames.com.
John Romero and fellow id Software co-founder Adrian Carmack proudly announce BLACKROOM™, a visceral, varied and violent shooter that harkens back to classic FPS play with a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense, weaponized combat. Use fast, skillful movement to dodge enemy attacks, circle-strafe your foes, and rule the air as you rocket jump in the single- and multiplayer modes. BLACKROOM launches with unique multiplayer maps and robust modding support for the community to make diabolical creations of their own design - Coming Winter 2018 to WIN and MAC!
BLACKROOM is the FPS you have been waiting for: a return to fast, violent and masterful play on the PC. In BLACKROOM, you reign supreme in a variety of multiplayer modes, including co-op, 1-on-1 deathmatch and free-for-all arena in a motley mix of locations including hardcore military sims, hellish infernos and interstellar space. If you prefer a single-player experience, delve into an intense 10+ hour campaign, spanning wildly varied environments, from ruined Victorian mansions to Wild West ghost towns to treacherous pirate galleons and beyond.
BLACKROOM is the FPS you know we can make. Master fast, skillful movement with rocket jumping, strafe jumping and circle strafing. Wield intricately balanced weapons where each one has a specific use and does the damage that makes you feel good. Challenge yourself with expert abstract level design, invented and perfected by John Romero and fully realized by Adrian Carmack’s dark and unique style. Master six built-in multiplayer maps, as well as countless maps created by the community. In BLACKROOM, Romero is designing every level.
BLACKROOM is what the FPS community asked for. Community is and has always been at the core of FPS, and BLACKROOM allows for an incredible range of modding opportunities. Beyond the levels in the game, extend your experience with full mod support (no additional DLC or subscriptions) and dedicated servers. Put your skills to the test in Challenge Modes (speedrunning and more) that present unique and demanding goals.
BLACKROOM is unique because it is shifting. Change your environment from within the game with the proprietary Boxel, a device only allocated to HOXAR engineers. Influence the environment, your weapons and your enemies.
BLACKROOM is metal. It features a new soundtrack and compositions by acclaimed metal guitarist George Lynch, frequently cited as one of the best metal guitarists in the world.
BLACKROOM™ takes place at one of the world’s leading tech companies, HOXAR™. HOXAR has created a technology that allows people to be anywhere at any time, creating fully-realized holographic worlds that are indistinguishable from reality, all inside of a giant black room.
Finding early favor amongst military and police organizations, BLACKROOM continues to be prized for its life-like ability to train specialists against the horrors of war and urban terror. Even commercial clients have lined up to develop HoloSims that might terrify adults and delight children. Now, though, simulations are being twisted and warped into each other, and blending with something even more sinister.
In the single-player campaign, you step into the shoes of Dr. Santiago Sonora, Chief hNode Engineer at HOXAR. When testing of their new, leading-edge Predictive Memory technology reveals troubling anomalies that blend the real world with the virtual, you’re sent in with both Boxel and gun to investigate and are swept across a staggering and dangerous array of simulations. Peering into your mind and tapping into your deepest memories and fears, however, it’s clear that the BLACKROOM is not all fun and games.
Your combat and perceptual skills will be put to the test as you run, gun and strafe your way through BLACKROOM’S abstract and sometimes surrealistic levels. Lifts, switches, secret rooms, and twisted hidden passageways challenge your skill. Increasingly, more depraved and terrifying aberrations enter the world around you. Are you prepared to destroy what BLACKROOM has made real? Or will you lose sense of what is real and what is not within BLACKROOM?
Well balanced weapons are an important part of every FPS, and they are a key focus for this game. In addition to the classic weapons you expect from an FPS, BLACKROOM features weapons with some incredible abilities and destructive potential. Here are some of the exciting weapons you will find in BLACKROOM.
GLOXEL: Your basic handgun that traces a hoxelray straight through your target. Light damage.
HOXSAW: Shoots a wide, blurry beam of hoxelight out to 10 feet in front of it and is deadly while it’s on. Similar to a chainsaw made of light. Time-based use.
RECODE: Shoots a canister of AI up to 30 feet away. When it explodes, it will force any hit by it to turn on their nearest AI friend.
HOXELIGHT: Shoots a hoxelbeam that stays in the air for 10 seconds before disappearing. Deadly to the touch the entire time.
BLACKHOLE BOMB: Create a micro-singularity in a room, pulling everything into it within a radius for 10 seconds.
One of the unique features of BLACKROOM is that in addition to an arsenal of lethal weapons, you also have the Boxel, a device that lets you alter the reality of BLACKROOM itself. Initially intended as a debug tool for developers and testers of BLACKROOM, the Boxel gives you a variety of tools to give you an edge against your opponents. Some examples of the Boxel in action are below:
Primarily intended for the single-player campaign, the Boxel will have some limited use in multiplayer as well. The Boxel isn’t a replacement for a good weapon, but using them both in conjunction, you’ll truly be able to master the action-packed challenges and mysteries you encounter in BLACKROOM.

NOTE: As we noted in the reward tiers - since shipping of physical rewards is a long way off, we're going to use Pledge Manager to help everyone get the right shipping amount. Kickstarter requires charging an initial fee for shipping of physical rewards (which we set at $5), but the final amount will be charged through Pledge Manager. This will help everyone save money in the long run since we won't be estimating what costs will be a year or two from now.

John and Adrian have been making games and running teams for decades. John and Adrian combined have shipped well over 100 games. They are at the top of their field and recognize that even with the best team things can still crop up. Delays can occur at every level of innovation. To address this, a full-time producer is assigned to the project. Furthermore, a game with such unique and in-depth gameplay as this certainly requires a lot of QA. That said, this isn't their first rodeo, and they're confident given the funding and their team they are able to deliver the game they and the backers want.
When it comes to fulfillment on digital and physical rewards they've teamed up with DDM and Breadpig, two teams that have overseen dozens of campaigns and tens of thousands of happy backers.
Näheres zur Rechenschaftspflicht auf KickstarterNo. BLACKROOM is a complete, all new first-person shooter that has nothing to do with id Software and its Doom and Quake video game franchises or Ion Storm and Daikatana. Inspired by a wide range of first-person shooter titles and developed by John Romero and Adrian Carmack who have worked on Doom, Quake, and Daikatana in the past, BLACKROOM shares no characters, code, fiction, or anything else with these titles besides the genre.
The current plan is to go back to the original king of platforms for shooters: PC! Backers will have the option to choose PC/MAC via Steam or PC/MAC DRM-Free. Additional platforms may be added depending on the Kickstarter's performance.
Yes, a DRM-free option will be available to backers. After the campaign closes, we will survey backers for their chosen platform: PC/MAC on Steam or PC/MAC DRM-free.
Unreal 4. We want to focus on gameplay and not building an engine from scratch. Classic FPS gameplay at a blistering speed and a high framerate demands a C-based engine.

Yes! If you're backing at HOXAR GAMER or higher you're going to get access to alpha and beta builds as we get into development. We'll be looking at feedback and how you play the game to make it even better.
A game like this couldn't be made for only $700,000. We mentioned in the video that we've also been talking to partners who want to see a proven interest in game. If the Kickstarter funds they'll provide the additional funding we need to complete the game.
How about we just make you all a game.
