Our band, the Crow Quill Night Owls is a string band that is devoted to the revival and preservation of pre-war American music. We mostly learn our songs from old shellac records, that spin at 78rpm. We dig these up from the graveyards of yester-year. They are treasures that teach us songs from people that have slipped through the cracks of history, and the only print they left behind are in the grooves these old records.
Check out this American Standard Time artist portrait/documentary just released, about our band! It was just accepted into a Film Festival in N.C.!
We are doing this kickstarter so we can take our music out to the east coast on a tour. We want to be able to promote our band, (and our new album) , tour the East coast autonomously, and, collaborate with some of the few people in America that play this music today.
We recently recorded a new album, that took us a year to complete. This Album ,"Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams", is a collection of different recording sessions we made through out that time. Some of the people featured on this album live out on the east coast. Finding people who play this music is almost as rare as finding the records themselves. We thank our lucky stars that we have found friends who also have their heads steeped in the sound waves of this almost forgotten music, and style of playing.
Our East Coast Tour…
We are a D.I.Y. band, we do everything from creating our own artwork to booking ...The one thing we have not been able to do ourselves is get out to the East Coast to tour.
Although we've been out east a hand full of times, we've never made it out there on our own steam. It has only been when we've ganged up with other projects and the extended members of our group, that we have had the chance to braise that side of the country.
We've had the pleasure of teaming up with the Indigo Dance Co., as Le Serpent Rouge, the Spiders Nest Clown Show, including Blind Boy Chocolate and the Milk Sheiks, and Brody Douglas Hunt. Some of us even, joined Maria Muldaur on her US and Canada tour as her Garden of joy jug band. Because of these few trips we have had requests to return, and want to answer those requests with a "coming near you" tour schedule.
Our Plan is to return to to Louisville, KY, and play the Jug Band Jubilee, for our second year, on September 21st. After that we hope to head to Asheville,NC, play some shows and busk, and then head down to New Orleans, LA. Depending on the weather and venue availability, we will then head north to New York stopping in various towns along the way.
For the past 6 years that we've been a band, we've been touring and playing this music, mainly in the North West due to the fact that our trusty steed, Busephalis Nordskag is sadly dying. It is only a matter of time that he will Putt putt no more.
Since the beginning we always new we were limited to the West coast, because of warnings from our mechanic, and the way our van struggles on the road. We've been push starting our van since the day we got it, and the problems have only ripened with age. Presently our touring territory has shrunk to exclusively the North West, and even that tour route is diminishing. We won't be able complete this project, unless we get a new ride.
We are a full time working, touring band. It is important for us to be able to promote our music and art by getting it out there. Our most important tool is having a reliable touring vehicle, that we can call home on the road, and that will get us to your town.
What are we gonna do with the dough?
To go out east, and take a month long tour from NOLA to New York, say, the average cost would be anywhere from $2,500 to $3,000. This is a low estimate that includes only gas, touring costs, promotion expenses, and not other other costs that can pop up on a tour.
Touring is expensive! When you are going to towns that are unfamiliar with your music, or have a small fan base, coupled with the cost of gas being at an all time high, you end up doing what we call "pay to play". Not to mention the fact that times are hard, and most people can't afford to pay musicians well!
If we reach our goal, the funds raised will go to the cost of touring, promotion for that tour , kickstarter & Amazon fees, rewards creation and distribution, and last but not least , a dependable touring van, that will take us out on our East Coast Tour.
We will be able to get to the towns and people we have been unable to reach with our music, and collaborate with some of the few musicians that play this music in the US. JAM!
That's ALOTTA dough!... Break it down, Night Owls.....
All the dependable looking vans we've had our eye on, although used, don't come cheap!
$5,000- $8,000 - damn well better get us a trusty steed!
$3,000 - will cover our expenses to take this tour
$2,000 will cover the costs of completing this campaign, creating gifts, and sending them out... at least by our estimations.
If our costs are less, or if we make over our goal (one can only hope...!), all excess money will go right back into our band. Creating more merchandise, posters for promotion, AND making this tour all the more grand!
This project is a dream we've had for a long time. We've had to put it on the back burner, because we've never had the means to fund it. It's a big deal, and alotta dough!!! We have been reluctant to do something like this for years, because we ARE so used to being D.I.Y., but have come to the realization that we can't do this with out help. Kickstarter is a rare and wonderful platform that provides artists a chance to reach otherwise unattainable goals. We are thankful to have this opportunity. This is a scary and exciting venture for us, and we can't do this with out your help and support!
Wish us luck! And if you can't donate, pass this project link on!!!
THANK YOU soooo much for checking out our campaign!
And our sincere adoration and graditude to all our friends, family and fans that believe in us, and have encouraged this project to live!

All These Could Be Yours! And So Much More!
So that's all folks! Thanks so much for your time and support, and wish us Owls luck!
Risks and challenges
Being in a touring band, there is always risk, challenges.. and..luck, glorious luck! Completing a project like this takes a lot of time and planning. We will have a small window of time to book a tour, promote it, send off our gifts and find our new van before the weather turns.
However, like Night Owls, we are used to burning the midnight oil, and pedal to the metal planning. If we need to send out gifts while we're on the road, so be it. If unknowingly we find a lemon, and our van busts, we'll fix it. If for some off chance, Godzilla is real, and happens to find us irresistibly tantalizing, at a truck stop at 4 in the morning, as we innocently are refueling ourselves with coffee on a all night drive to the next town, we will run.
Our point is, we have faith that we can stand the test, and can figure out the best was to keep our vision afloat.
