Twenty-six years on, under the oppressive rain-filled skies of Mort City, the downtrodden masses have spoken as one and with a single resounding message: It's time for SLA Industries 2nd Edition.
SLA Industries (pronounced "Slay Industries") is an award-winning pen-and-paper role-playing game that was first published in Scotland in 1993. The game is a horror noir science-fiction setting set in a dystopian reality in which the majority of the known universe is either owned or indirectly controlled by the eponymous corporation SLA Industries. The game incorporates themes from the cyberpunk, gothic horror and conspiracy genres, and has always been praised on the quality of writing and art. SLA Industries is considered one of the first and best examples of the Splatterpunk genre in RPGs.
The World of Progress, the universe in which SLA Industries operates, is a science-fiction image of the 1980s, where the fax machine spews out information alongside green-screen computers and vat-grown biogenetic monsters, who compete with humans and exotic alien races for work in an overgrown city that plunges deep underground.
We are very lucky to still have the original creative team at the core of this RPG. Dave Allsop and Jared Earle have been here from the beginning and have a clear vision for the future of SLA Industries. As with all of the SLA Industries publications, there will be high-quality art, brief stories, character quotes and other in-game content to bring The World of Progress to life. SLA Industries 2nd Edition will be crammed full of full-colour art, presenting one of the best visualised worlds in the RPG arena and the the most stunningly visual representation of The World of Progress to date.
Players in SLA Industries take on the role of an Operative, the highly-trained and well-equipped freelancers that serve as the company's agents, investigators and enforcers. Operatives perform tasks for both a pay packet and the promise of an increase in their security clearance, as both provide them access to an increased standard of living, better equipment, progression up the corporate ladder and sponsorship opportunities. Most of all though, they strive for the one thing that everyone in the media-driven World of Progress wants: Notoriety.
Characters progress along with the campaign, gaining credits, security clearance and notoriety, and can spend their hard-earned rewards on better equipment, stronger armour, more deadly weapons, powerful combat drugs or something a little bit different, like a down-payment on a Life After Death account, ensuring that even death can't stop them. Each of the nine different races offers its own play style, each armed with unique racial abilities, from the studious Neophron to the drug-addled Frother, from the brutish Stormer to the quick-witted Wraithen, from the versatile Human to the honour-bound Shaktar, pick the race that suits you best and bring them to life.
SLA Industries 2nd Edition features an entirely new d10-based rules system, built from the ground up and designed to offer a more streamlined and cinematic gaming experience than the old system, while remaining true to the setting. Ratings Points are a new mechanic for 2nd Ed, earned from face time in front of the camera, or through bravery, extreme success and spectacular failure. These points enable players to perform cinematic feats that defy the norm and impress audiences, and when things don't quite work out, there's the new Luck mechanism that allows players to alter or re-roll dice results. Both Ratings Points and Luck are a finite resource, however, and should not be used frivolously.
In the following video Shep talks about a few of the changes between 1st and 2nd Edition, as well as some of the new additions to the system...
SLA Industries 2nd Edition will be a 192-page hardcover book with lavish full-colour illustrations throughout. Most of the pages have been written and the roadmap for the book is complete. In the book, there will be a comprehensive look at the structure of the company and a deep dive into Threat Analysis, which will cover all the major rivals, cults, critters and dangers that SLA and its Operatives face on a day to day basis.
You can read more about the contents here.
This Quickstart PDF offers a 'rules lite' look at the new system and provides five pre-generated characters and an introductory scenario for up to five players. Go give it a whirl!
To make things easy, we have organised the campaign into a number of simple tiers. Pick the tier you want from the menu on the right of the page. The following graphic explains the content related to each of those tiers (note, many of the images are mock-ups, the campaign is to make them happen):
To add any of the following items to your pledge just increase your pledge by the amount shown for the items you want:
Two supporting source books are available: Hunter Sheets Issue Two, an eighty-page book which includes targets that SLA Industries wants you to take care of, and SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1, a massive 352-page tome for those that wish to take their adventure out of the city and into the infamous sectors surrounding it. Conversion documents for both of these books to bring them in line with the new 2nd Edition rules system are included as a part of this campaign.

Dave Allsop was the originator of SLA Industries and is the art director and main artist for Nightfall Games. He is an in-demand artist in the gaming industry having worked on the likes of Magic: the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, to name but a few.
Many of the regular SLA artists are still part of the team, including Jon Hodgson and Clint Langley, and we have also been joined by many newer artists at the top of their game.
Jared Earle is one of the original members of Nightfall Games and was responsible for a large portion of the original release in 1993. A vital part of the company, and lead on this Kickstarter, Jared continues to write, edit and layout SLA Industries publications around his life as a sysadmin.
Mark Rapson is the owner of Word Forge Games and has had significant creative and operational input in recent Nightfall Games releases. He was the driving force behind the completion of the SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1 kickstarter and is lead writer for Thresher, flora, fauna, diseases and the 9th Division.
Chris ‘Shep’ Shepperson is a writer and games designer responsible for the 2nd Edition rule system and is a prolific content writer, contributing significantly to SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1 book and the majority of the writing already done for 2nd Edition. He also led the development of the Cannibal Sector 1 miniature game ruleset and has also contributed heavily to the works of other publishers, including Modiphius and Red Scar publishing.
Based on past experience of our team, we will be charging shipping after the Kickstarter concludes based on the actual costs incurred to ship. We will collect this via our pledge manager after the campaign ends.
DO NOT ADD MONEY FOR SHIPPING NOW - IT WILL NEED REFUNDING AND MAY BE LIABLE TO KS CHARGES THAT CANNOT BE REFUNDED.
Shipping is charged after the campaign, separate to your pledge so we can be fair to all our backers (shipping is rarely one size fits all). We will ship your rewards at our cost to our international hubs and charge shipping from your nearest hub to you. Depending on where in the world you are, we will either ship to you from our hub in the USA (US, CA and some ROW backers), Australia (APAC), or the UK (EU & other ROW backers). As a rough estimate, for the 'HALLOWEEN JACK' level pledge, we expect shipping to look something like this:
- UK: £6 (Royal Mail 2nd class 'signed for')
- EU/US/CA: £12
- Rest of the world: £20.
Please note that while we do our best to get you your rewards in a timely manner and at the best delivery cost we can, you may not necessarily receive your rewards before the product makes it into distribution in your own country or before it's made available at conventions or through special promotion opportunities. We hope that the special price and exclusive items you will get during the Kickstarter will make up for any such possible lag. However, if this is something that is not acceptable to you, please do not back this project, and instead wait for the retail release. Thank you for your understanding.
A really good question! Nightfall Games is a small and growing company and although we have produced a lot already we want to commission artists that complement the art already created for this book. When the initial goal is met, this kickstarter funds will be used to pay external artists for their artwork (approx 1/3 of the total art we want to include: approx 50 of 150 pieces) and the production of the hardback rulebook, 'Jack' dice and GM Screen pack. Any additional funds will pay for the stretch goals and newer add-ons to be completed by manufacturers, contractors and commissioned artists and writers. The commissioned individuals will work co-currently with our core team, therefore timescales should not be affected significantly.
Note, unlike some Kickstarters, we are not running this campaign as a preorder. The money you pledge will be spent on making this game happen, including paying external artists, writers and printing companies. Check our refund policy in the FAQ section.
Risks and challenges
The rules system is completely written, play tested and has formed the basis of the recently released Quick Start PDF. Approximately 60% of all writing is complete and a significant portion of the artwork, leaving us with approximately 40% of the book to complete. The funds raised by this Kickstarter will be used to commission external artists and/or writers, to complement our team.
We have a good working relationship with our book and dice manufacturers and have used them before. Our time expectations include the fact they will produce in the same time frames they did previously.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
