About this project
What is this?
First, let's make this clear - you're not buying the DVD here. That's not what you're doing. What you're doing is supporting this project because you believe in it and want to see it made. In return for that support you're going to get a reward, the finished DVD for example, that I hope, you think is worth your investment.
Look out over the next week or so for highlight trailers of some of the footage I hope to turn into my finished documentary. Here's the first highlight trailer to whet your appetite:
Over six weeks, at the end of 2011, I completed my retirement tour. I have over sixty hours of footage that I either shot myself or with the help of whatever friend or stranger I could find. It was not ideal - not like I'd hoped or imagined - but then neither was my career.
What is was, however, was an intimate and heartfelt insight into the industry I spent my life pursuing and the final step of my childhood dream as I traveled the world on my journey. Part documentary, part shoot DVD, you will see the amazing characters I met along the way and the emotional journey I took.
Who's in it?
While it of course focuses on me, it has an ecclectic mix of my friends, family and acquaintances, discussing professional wrestling from every level:
Billy Gunn, Evan Bourne, Carlito, Austin Aries, Shark Boy, Eddie Edwards, the Young Bucks, Jimmy Jacobs; MMA legend Dan Severn; British wrestling legend Robbie Brookside; Colt Cabana, Paul London, Brian Kendrick and so many more fantastic characters such as Shasta McNasty, Cody Hawk, Mad Man Manson, Chad Collyer, Daizee Haze, Lenny Leonard, and my lovely family.
Here's another highlight video so you can have an idea of the content:
Why I need the money
To make a presentable finished documentary I need money to cover the cost of,
1. editing the massive amount of footage,
2. getting rights to other footage and music if feasible,
3. actually producing/shipping the DVD, and fulfilling all the other rewards,
4. the fees taken out by kickstarter/amazon,
5. paying taxes on the money, and
6. supporting myself while I do it.
When you factor in all of the above, it's really a break even project at this amount. Please remember, you're not buying the DVD, you're supporting the project because you believe in the story and want to see it made:
Why it's important I make it
Most of us who were professional wrestlers never made it to the heights of fame and fortune in WWE. For us, the world of independent professional wrestling was our life. Away from the lights and TV cameras, away from sports entertainment, it is our piece of the dream we all had when we were fans, shared with the fans that get it. And this is one of our stories.
Moving on from wrestling is the toughest decision I have ever had to make. I am looking to get the funding, not only to make the documentary, but also to learn the skills to be able to explore other avenues beyond the ring in the future.
More than this though, I think it's a story everyone will enjoy and learn from. I know I did.
If you want to see this documentary made; if you're a fan of Nigel McGuinness; if you wondered why I stopped wrestling; or if you're just a fan of independent professional wrestling, please support this project and help ensure our story is told. This belongs to us:
You can read the blogs of the tour and read updates on Nigelwrestling.com.
If this project is funded and the documentary made it is due to the support of everyone who pledged money, but I also have to thank my awesome friend Trever who helped me buy the camera, both he and my wonderful girlfriend Marilyn who let me use their computers and offered their opinion; my parents who supported me, as always, in every way possible; and Colt, Dan, Sal, Eddie, Cary, Alex, Steve, Matt, Scott, Kevin, Amanda, Frank and everyone else whose opinion I sought out.
Credit also goes to Tony Knox, Lee South, George Tahinos, Scott Finkelstein, Jessica Patel, The Daily Star, Fighting Spirit Magazine, Pro Wrestling Illustrated and ROH for photos/video used in the trailers for this documentary; and Kevin MacLeod, Jamie Rumley and The Verandas, whose royalty free music added so much to them.
Also, I'd be amiss if I didn't mention my best friend Alan. If I can't trust you, who can I trust?
And as this thing moves on, I am reminded how blessed I am to have the friends I do. My great friend Zia is championing my cause from the hilltops - No doesn't mean no; it just means "I need more information."
Goal Reached! - Thank You All
Last night, sat in the bleachers after a show, I checked online and discovered we had reached the funding goal. A quiet calm came over me and I felt genuinely blessed. I can not tell you how touched I am that we did this in just three days, I can't find the words, but I'll try:
