Funded! This project was successfully funded on April 29, 2012.

From the creator of Chip’s Challenge comes a new take on an old classic game that lets you create & share your own puzzles.

Update #1 After over 20 years of silence Chip’s Challenge creator Chuck Sommerville explains why there is no Chip’s Challenge 2.

Update #4 How’s Chuck’s Challenge 3D going to be sold?

We’ve been getting lots of comments & questions about what the right-hand $5 reward tier means.

Pre-order the PC or Mac version of Chuck's Challenge 3D. This will either include the full game or $10 worth of in-game credits depending how the game is finally sold.

We wanted you guys to decide how we should sell the game. Listening to your feedback it’s very clear that you want to just buy the game for PC & Mac. So we can officially say that it is going to be a straight one-off purchase of at least $10. That means if you pledge $5 you are pre-ordering the game for at least half price.

Also, regarding where the game will be available to download from, this will hopefully be from Steam. However, ultimately it is Steam who choose what games they sell. But this is something we shall try very hard to make happen.

P.S. Once a Kickstarter project starts you can’t change the reward text, hence why we’ve not updated the $5 reward pledge text.

Hello Kickstarters

We are team Niffler an indie game development studio, and we've been working on a new version of Chuck's Challenge for the PC & Mac called Chuck's Challenge 3D.

The Game
Chuck’s Challenge 3D is a puzzle game to tease the brain and challenge the fingers, walking through the evolution of gaming: move from A to B, collect items, the red key opens the red door, etc. But, like Lego, knowing what each piece does is only the beginning of the game’s fun, as players can also create and share their own levels using a simple paint-style interface.

Asida Level 3 - DoOrbs

Chuck's Challenge 3D - Alpha build in Unity

Cloottie Level C24 - Dodgeball

Chuck’s Challenge includes four different game modes:

  • Single Player play the main story and your best times are stored online.
  • Race a multi-player mode where you see who can finish first.
  • Create an editing tool to build your own levels & share them.
  • Weekly Puzzle each week a single player puzzle can be downloaded.

Why Kickstarter?
Well we're making a game for you, so we thought we should make it with you. So you can either choose to simply pre-order Chuck's Challenge at a discount, or get involved with the game development.

We're also going to use the amount of money raised as a measure of how much extra stuff we should add to the game. So if we are lucky enough to reach our goal that's enough to build the game's foundations. However if we exceed the goal, then we can add extra cool features such as:

  • Full Facebook integration such as friend list, profile images & notifications if one of you friends plays or beats you on a level.
  • New Game Elements including laser, mirrors and bots.
  • Enhanced search which learns the levels that you like.
  • Co-operative player with multiple players on a single screen

We've got a mixture of digital and physical rewards for your pledges, including obviously Chuck's Challenge 3D. Have a look on the righthand side of this page.

The Characters
There are three main character (groups) in the game:

  • Chuck who Woop has 'summoned' to create games for him to play.
  • Woop a being that can alter time and space who likes to play games.
  • Woop's Pets that he's collected from various planets.

The Team
We're a small team based around the globe that believe games can be more than a passive experience and that they can be creative too. So we build games that are fun to make and play for both us and the player.

I’m Chuck Sommerville and I wrote the first version of Chip’s Challenge and created the game. I’m also co-founder of Niffler Ltd.

I had this idea for a game that I always wanted to do. So I built a prototype of it at home in my own spare time. Then I got the green light to go ahead and do it for the Lynx. So I made the game and then put it out there and it was a huge success.

So I decided to try and do a sequel to Chip’s Challenge since it was so successful. And I got permission to go ahead with that. And I worked for like two years really hard and got it all published. Got it just the way I wanted it. Went back to the people who owned the name and just found out that they wanted me to upfront all the marketing costs. And they asked for $100,000 or so in advance. I couldn’t afford that. I was really sad about it for a long time and I decided eventually to just move on and count it as one of those life lessons. It wasn’t going to happen.

Niffler is an independent game studio that I co-founded along with some friends of mine: Barn Cleave and Kevin Furry.

Well there are lots of exciting things going on in development right now. You can get funding through groups like Kickstarter. And with digital distribution it's easy to get the game out there. And with mobile devices there are even more game players out there than ever.

Well we though about that, so we looked into it. And Barn spent months negotiating with the right's owners, but it turned out now they wanted even more money than they wanted 20 years ago. And it just wasn’t reasonable. Our only option really was to sell the game for $50 and give $40 to the right holders. Just so we could have the name Chip instead of Chuck.

First the title wasn’t suggested by me, it was suggested by the team. So I went with it. Chuck’s Challenge is a Chip’s Challenge style game with the same type of philosophies, but for mobile device like the iPhone and iPad. But it’s got some great new features like the ability to undo, it’s got a built-in level editor and you can share the levels you create with your friends. We use some of the new technologies like cloud based computing and rapid development for mobile devices.

We’re doing a Kickstarter project to raise money to take the iPhone version and move it over to the PC and Mac. The PC and Mac version are written in a Unity3D engine, which is an industry standard for gaming development. So it looks really good.

If Chuck’s Challenge is successful we’ll also move it to other platforms like say the Android.

Well this is the red shirt. And what happened was the art team for Chuck’s Challenge tried me in a variety of different outfits and the Hawaiian shirt was one of them. And they liked it the best and so did I.

What they didn’t know was I already had a red shirt that looked just like it. So it was kind of a chicken and egg kind of thing. We all laughed about it and thought yeah that pretty good.

  • Making Chuck’s Challenge 3D for other devices is dependent on two elements:

    1) What platforms Unity3D (the game engine Chuck’s Challenge 3D is built in) can export to.

    2) Time to polish the game so it works really well on the platform.

So for Linux it looks like Unity3D does not support Linux yet, however we might be able to export the game to Flash so Linux users maybe able to play it in a browser.

Whereas Android is supported by Unity3D, so it's just a case of fine-tuning the game for each and every device. However there are loads and loads of different Android devices. So porting Chuck’s Challenge 3D to Android can be done once we’ve built the PC & Mac version. This is one of the first things we’d look at doing if we exceed our Kickstarter project funding goal.
