Inspired by eschatological literature of the postexilic period, Culminus form the third and final volume in my Light versus Darkness series of deluxe, dark art poker playing cards. Culminus aims to represent ultimate evil and ultimate good with two standalone deck designs, Infernum and Infiniti, where infernal devils are seeking to wreak havoc to neutral men, and ethereal guardians are trying to stop them. In its essence, Culminus symbolises the moral compass and ethic dilemmas that all monarchs have faced in history and time as saints and sinners.
Each edition will have a limited print run of 1,900 with only 1,800 offered via Kickstarter. Click HERE to see an overview of both decks in their entirety.

The courts of Culminus are represented by restless devils fighting tireless guardians in eternal battle. Six devils who are passionately engaged in destroying the moral compass of neutral men, and six celestial guardians, with unbreakable spirits trying to secure the justice, peace and prosperity that is the light of this world. Each character is drawn in hand in collaboration with award winning illustrator Patrick Leis, and has a unique backstory that will be available to all backers. The Infernum deck has black cards matching the Dominus Obscura deck for consistency, while the Infiniti deck has a clean, white design to match it’s predecessor, the Dominus Divinus deck. Both decks have unique, distinctive pips, and an added index ornamentation as a ‘series finale’ touch to the design.
INFERNUM - The Monarchy of Darkness (Exercitum Diaboli) is comprised of fiends, a succubus, infernal devils and Lucifer himself, who all have unique ways to corrupt the minds of neutral men. Court panel texts reads ‘Hell itself can not be conquered.”
INFINITI - The Guardians of Light (Vi Luminis), are comprised of celestial demigods who protect the weak and innocent from harm by placing themselves between the devils and their targets. Court panel texts reads ‘A passage for the crippled, and a light for the blind.”
INFERNUM - The Infernum backs have diabolic artwork in golden, metallic pantone, with a devils’ skull to represent hell and gothic demonology. The tip of the trident is placed on the head to simulate power and a kings crown taken by force and dark magic.
INFINITI - The Infiniti backs are designed as a powerful and organic artwork printed in golden, metallic pantone, and designed to represent honesty, loyalty, justice, power and peace through angel wings and fleur de lis.
Supporting the project with six or more Culminus decks will unlock a branded brick box for FREE in your pledge reward to store the decks. I will let you choose which box version you want for your decks (in a survey after the funding). They will be manufactured in a sturdy and matte quality similar to the Indictus and Dominus brick boxes, and fit either six or twelve decks (depending on your pledge tier).
Both Infernum and Infiniti has a set of two matching jokers. Here you can see one from each deck. I want the jokers to represent the path of damnation and the path of salvation.
The Culminus dealer coins are produced in solid metal with gold coating and measure 2 inches in diameter (50mm). The two sides are different in design. To grab one dealer coin, simply add +149 DKK to your pledge, and send me a private message to confirm your choice of add-ons.
Soft to the touch, the branded satin pouches are ideal for the storing of your Culminus decks with style. The deluxe satin pouches are manufactured in black and white and have gold foil icons hot stamped to match and represent Infernum and Infiniti. The pouches are manufactured specifically to hold one deck of poker sized playing cards. To grab one pouch, simply add +30 DKK to your pledge, and send me a private message to confirm your choice of add-ons.
The Culminus booklet is ideal for you if you want to enjoy the court illustrations in a bigger, uncropped format. This is a printed booklet in A6 format. To grab one booklet, simply add +79 DKK to your pledge, and send me a private message to confirm your choice of add-ons.
To have your decks signed, simply add +25 DKK to your pledge, and send me a private message to confirm your choice of add-ons. This amount covers any and all the decks in your pledge tier. If you don't want all your decks signed, you must be sure to notify me.
With the signature add-on, I'll be signing the decks with a metal paint marker on the back of the tuck itself (after removing the factory cellophane).
I only have a very limited stock of my Indictus private reserves left. You will find these offered as a supplement in some pledge tiers. Some of my private reserves don't have a numbered tuck seal.
I only have a very limited stock of my Dominus private reserves left. You will find these offered as a supplement in some pledge tiers. Some of my private reserves don't have a numbered tuck seal.
As the lead artist of several, succesful deck projects I am no novice in the world of custom playing cards. I have in-depth knowledge on most printer companies and the strengths and weaknesses of each. I am an avid backer on Kickstarter and know how things work.
With Culminus I am hoping to end a series of playing cards with the style. I have never worked as much on a deck project as I have with Culminus. My earliest sketches were formed 14 months ago, and the designs have changed much since then. The courts are co-illustrated with a world champion in creative painting, and I already paid him in full for his involvement in the process. Culminus is the most advanced deck design I have been involved with, and I have invested a quite significant sum of my profit from earlier projects to give it the attention that it deserves. Culminus is the 'finale' of my Light vs Darkness series, and it will have embossed, foiled tucks, metallic ink for cards and seals as per default. Also, Culminus decks will not be offered to any third party retailers, but remain 'backer-exclusive' in that sense.
Culminus will only be made with your support to help cover the costs of investments, setup fees, proof charges, printing, design, freight, shipping and the time to create all the pieces of art. I am launching this deck on Kickstarter as an artist, a deck collector, and an active fan of the crowdfunding concept. Let's do this together and create something unique!
With senior artists, better packaging, deluxe tuck stocks, etc, I've invested more in this project, than in all previous projects to further up the scale. Rest assured that I will go the extra mile to deliver the decks as advertised!
All artwork is basically complete and awaiting your support. I've set a plan to have all rewards delivered by late February 2018 and here's how I am going to make it happen:
All decks will be manufactured by NPCC during July-December and shipped to me in January 2018. That is when I am going to start my fulfilment, with everything well prepared in advance. This should allow all parcels to ship and transit without much hassle. If everything goes according to plan the decks should be well delivered to all backers by late February 2018. In other words I've made a plan with buffers and some wiggle room. It may actually be conservative, but I care much for my reputation and credibility.
I require top service, manageable production/import costs, and an efficient production flow. NPCC is the obvious choice for me for this deck project and I have a good communication with them. NPCC are always looking for ways to improve themselves, and you can expect a product on par with (or even better) than my Indictus and Dominus decks.
I've tested the quality of the Culminus cards and chosen tuck stocks. If for some obscure reason my cooperation with NPCC fails, I will simply turn towards another printer and secure the best possible deck quality, composition and fulfilment for all backers. Presented artwork is subject to minor tweaks and updates.
Risks and challenges
This is my fourth Kickstarter project and I know how things work. All presented features have been technically confirmed, and formally quoted by NPCC prior to launching this kickstarter. My last project, Dominus was manufactured by NPCC and did live up to my high ambitions of quality. I have much reason to use them again for Culminus.
I've spent many months researching, designing and budgetting. However, obstacles can arise unexpectedly. Potential set-backs include production delays, shipping and sourcing issues. That being said, I feel extremely confident in my tested suppliers and the conservative timeline I've chosen. Buffers are added to the development plan because I'd love to deliver all rewards as promised, if not before.
As an experienced graphic designer, I've brought many complex products to my audience on time and with great feedback. There's nothing more important for me than getting your rewards delivered on time and as advertised.
Please note that customs MAY carefully open your deck(s) during shipping and thus break the factory sealing/cellophane. These are standard procedure checks to make sure that the parcel contains what it says on the label, and I hope for your understanding in such event. Shipping is handled with Deutsche Post and sent with tracking ID on selected parcels only.
Any additional customs charges potentially applied to your reward during shipping is out of my hands.
