About this project
About the Record:
Time Ain’t Free, but Nick Moss is: free of labels and limitations, of boundaries and expectations. He has followed his heart from the very beginning, faithfully and passionately playing traditional Chicago blues the way he learned from listening to and playing with the best. He widened his scope on the critically-acclaimed Privileged and Here I Am, stretching himself and challenging his devoted audience to hear him in a whole new way.
One listen to Time Ain't Free makes clear those records are fully realized works as well as mile markers on a journey to an ever-expanding idea of what is possible. From the rollicking opener “She Wants It” through the finale “(Big Mike's) Sweet Potato Pie,” we are treated to jams, grooves, shuffles, and blues whether in the form of the greasy guitar workout “Was I Ever Heard” or the funky, strutting title track. He is all over the place and yet nothing is beyond his grasp. That confidence has him taking chances musically and vocally and those risks pay off, rewarding him and his audience. Nick has worked with outstanding musicians throughout his career and the talent and versatility of this new lineup is capable not only of carrying out his new ideas but even inspiring a few of them. He's always been generous as a bandleader and now he's taking that one step further, passing the microphone to second guitarist Michael Ledbetter (descendant of Huddie, or "Lead Belly") to sing lead vocal on a few of these new songs. Led's voice and guitar work bring a powerful, soulful dimension to this album and the live shows.
Speaking of live shows, the songs from Time Ain't Free are already appearing in Nick’s setlist months before the record's release. "I usually only play a few songs off whatever record I'm putting out at the time, but I can't stop playing these," he said. "We play almost the whole album every night."
Nick's musical and career trajectory has been both upward and forward from the beginning but he has entered into a golden period and Time Ain't Free is the exhilarating sound of a man accelerating into the future.
In the past, we've put every record out through our own Blue Bella Records. That means we've used our own money to fund each project (musicians' fees, recording, mixing, mastering, manufacturing, radio promotion, press publicity, advertising, shipping, tour promotion, etc)... we simply need a little hand this time. Your help will be key in getting this record not only manufactured and released, but also (the most important part): professional promotion. We feel this is the best work Nick has done to date, and this CD deserves to be professionally promoted.
In order to get it distributed and heard by the masses, it needs a few things:
- Fab packaging! (hire a designer, pay the manufacturer)
- Radio Promotion! (hire a radio promoter)
- Publicity! (hire a publicist)
- Distribution! (cover shipping costs)
- Advertising! (buy ads in print and on the web)
Every pledge from every fan, friend and family member who wants to be a part of this momentous release will help the cause... we're confident our loyal fans (over the last 20 years!) will come through - and for that we thank you in advance!

Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk is that of not fulfilling our monetary goal, which would delay the release of "Time Ain't Free." We're so proud of this project that it would be a big disappointment to not have it see a spring release - so we can get it out to our fans during our 2014 tour season. Remember, backers get the CD in advance of release, when we're sending out to press (January 2014)!
There are, of course, risks in bringing a project of this scope together, as there are many elements to manage. Manufacturing of the CD (artwork is being created right now - we'll keep you updated on its progress), production of the t-shirts, printing of the Murob posters, creation of the Murob guitar wall hangers... and even our personal-touch rewards... we're ready to tackle all of those tasks to make this a very successful project. We're excited to connect with our fanbase in this way!
Our most substantial challenge is that of making the largest impact that we can with this record, which requires a substantial amount of promotion (hopefully leading to great publicity!) - this is where the help of our loyal fan base comes in.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
