"NEVER BEFORE HAS A KNIFE BEEN MADE AT A 71 ROCKWELL HARDNESS"
WE DID THE IMPOSSIBLE
Tungsten carbide – one of the hardest substances known to man – is very brittle. This – traditionally – made it “impossible” for use as a knife blade.
Consider these key facts…
- Steel knives are in the 52 to 56 level of Rockwell hardness.
- High quality knives are in the 56 to 58 range.
- Exceptional knives are at 62 Rockwell hardness.
But now, with the introduction of our new “Sandrin” Knife, it is the only blade in the world made of tungsten carbide, and it’s rated at 71 Rockwell C
HARDER THAN ANY METAL KNIFE EVER MADE
This industry-wide success story starts at the legendary Italian metallurgical company, Turmond SPA, where they developed a proprietary “breakthrough” method for using tungsten carbide in truly revolutionary ways.
In so doing, they developed the most technically advanced Chef knife ever made.
First: Not only is the tungsten carbide blade made of the “unheard of” hardness rated at 71 Rockwell.
Remember: Engineered metal is capable of so much more than regular steel.
Because of the properties of this special metal, functional stresses are setting new standards for the knife industry as demonstrated by the Sandrin TCK folder
Plus, since the engineered metal (tungsten carbide) is now the hardest knife blade in the world, this unique knife can probably be called…
THE KNIFE THAT WILL LAST FOREVER
That’s not an exaggeration. This is a knife that gets sharp and STAYS sharp.
Nothing cuts like tungsten carbide. But everyone always thought TC to be “too brittle” for knife applications.
Plus, standard abrasives and manufacturing processes normally used for grinding steel simply can’t handle tungsten carbide. It has to be surface-ground, not machined. In fact, diamond abrasives must be used.
Thus, tungsten carbide was “ruled out” as a material for knives.
But the experts at Turmond, the parent company of Sandrin, proved everybody wrong. With the Sandrin, they came up with a patented mixture that produces a solid piece of tungsten carbide.
Regular tungsten carbide metal would shatter if dropped.
But not the Sandrin proprietary Polyhedral Tungsten Carbide (PTC).
These knives – based on the limited-run “experimental” Kitchen Knife known as the Sadrin Nakiri are now available for the first time ever here on Kickstarter.
Others said it couldn’t be done. But we didn’t flinch.
OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY
New technologies produce new knives.
This is one of them.
Innovation and precision come together in the Sandrin Nakiri – changing the way knife-making has been done for thousands of years.
Now you can own a piece of “history in the making” with a knife that boasts the kind of precision that comes with 40 years grinding carbide and engineering new grade of TC.
Experience matters. So does the patented technology behind the Sandrin line.
The extraordinary precision of these knives can be measured to lightband tolerances. (Aerospace components used in our knives have a tolerance of 0.0002”)
And since the hardness of the metal is so incredible (HRC 71), this will prove to be…
THE MOST DURABLE KNIFE BLADE EVER MADE
Even with repeated, rugged use – these patented tungsten carbide blades will keep their edge and remain razor sharp vastly outperforming steel steels..
Sure, nothing lasts forever.
But – with industry applications showing that a carbide edge lasts up to 20 times longer than steel – this sure comes close!
Born of a new idea… a new material… and a new standard for precision that will make everything from the past completely obsolete.
We don't just want to improve the kitchen knife with the Nakiri, we want to change the industry forever through the latest technology and innovations in blade materials.
The Sandrin Nakiri is designed and manufactured in Italy and uses nano technology to create a blade made of Tungsten Carbide that is harder than any steel at a Rockwell Hardness of 71 yet still flexible due to the unique polyhedral structure of the bonded molecules. This means that the Nakiri will stay sharp up to 20x longer than steel knives and is durable enough to survive the harshest use.
The bottom line is that The Sandrin Nakiri will stay sharp longer and cut better than any other kitchen knife... period.
WHY TUNGSTEN CARBIDE?
Tungsten Carbide is an incredibly hard metal that has been used in industrial cutting tools for decades, but it's normally brittle and not suitable for knife blades until now.
Our proprietary blend of Tungsten Carbide allows it to be flexible while maintaining its hardness. This advancement allows us to make knives that are more durable, corrosion resistant and perform better than steel or ceramic knives.
A sharp knife is easier to control and the Sandrin Nakiri will stay sharp up to 20x longer than traditional steel knives making it safer to use. Also, since our knives achieve an amazing 71 on the Rockwell Scale, they don't leave behind microscopic particles in your food the same way steel knives do.
With all of the technology and engineering going into the Nakiri blade, we knew a traditional handle was out of the question. We enlisted acclaimed Knife Artisan Jason Morrisey to design the Nakiri Handle with unique Thumb Grooves that allow for better control when cutting in either hand. Utilizing the latest 3D printing techniques and a PA11 Glass Fiber reinforced material, we are able to make the Nakiri handle light, strong and safe for food use.
A nakiri style blade is a Japanese-style blade design generally used for chopping vegetables. Characterized by its straight blade edge and squared off tips, the nakiri knife allows you to cut all the way through to the cutting board without having to use a horizontal push or pull.
The Nakiri blade is sharpened to a combined final angle of 21 degrees which allows for a very fine and durable cutting edge while being as wear resistant as possible. We rounded the tip to help prevent any "accidental" cuts as this blade will stay VERY sharp for a long time.
Sandrin Knives is a subsidiary of Turmond SPA, a leading manufacturer of Industrial Tungsten Carbide cutting tools in Turin, Italy. Turmond has been working with Tungsten Carbide for over 50 years and is making the Nakiri using the latest technology and processes. As such all Sandrin Knives are backed by Turmond with a Lifetime Warranty against manufacturers defects.
Under normal household use, we don't anticipate the Nakiri having to be resharpened.... EVER! But if you are a superchef and do manage to dull the blade it can be resharpened with Diamond stones. Please let us know if you do manage to use it enough to lose the edge.. we haven't been able to do it without undergoing intense testing and stress.
As a manufacturer, we would normally sell the Nakiri's to a distributor who would then turn around and resell them to retailers and by the time the consumer (you) were able to buy it, the retail price would be well over $200. However, we are out to change the Knife industry and that means the Nakiri needs to be accessible to everyone. So our backers are getting their Nakiri's at an incredible price and we want you to join us and help spread the word about Tungsten Carbide.
Since we are already in production of our first 500 Nakiri's, we anticipate that we will be able to start delivery to our first Backers in JULY 2019. We are anticipating very high demand for these tungsten Carbide Kitchen knives and we have the capacity to produce as many Nakiri's as needed in the coming months.

Sandrin Knives are finished with the kind of precision and expertise that only comes with 40 years of experience in grinding carbide and with the knowledge, experience and passion passed along from my father. Sandrin blades are the perfect combination of hardness and strength whose extraordinary precision can be measured to light band tolerances. With an outstanding hardness of HRC 71, simply put, they’re nothing short of the hardest and most durable knife blades that have ever been made.
We have been amazed by the support we've received in the first few days of this campaign and the momentum keeps on building! Since blowing past our modest funding goal, we have been trying to come up with a new way to reward our backers if we go crazy and hit $100,000 in funding.
Well we have working prototypes of a 3D printed magnetic blade cover that protects the Nakiri (and your hands) but we weren't able to get them into production in time for the campaign. However, if we hit our Stretch goal of $100,000 we will put these covers into production and send them out to EVERY BACKER! Share our campaign and help us reach our next goal so you can get the Magnetic Blade Cover for your Nakiri.
Risks and challenges
We currently have completed production on the first 500 Nakiri's in our Italy Factory! Now they need to be imported to our US fulfillment partner and shipped out to YOU. We have years of experience in this process with our fixed blade and folding knives, but like any import, we can get held up at customs or have shipping delays that could delay delivery. However, the odds of that happening are very slim.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
