Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes are a simple, economical, and elegant solution to dramatically increase night visibility for bicycles.
Designed for modern double-walled rims, these reflective rim stripes apply in six sections for easy applications. They are precisely cut on a digital computer-controlled cutter.
This before and after picture shows the dramatic difference with Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes. Both pictures were taken in the exact same conditions and camera settings. The more powerful the light source is, the more brighter the reflection is. So, car headlights reflect back significantly more light than the flashlight used here.
Even with front and rear lights, side visibility of cyclists is very limited. Both of these riders have front and rear lights, but the bike with Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes is drastically more visible.
Even though Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes offer a huge increase in side visibility, you should always ride with front and rear lights at night.
The special retroreflective material offers a increase in night visibility of bicycles from any angle.
Light from vehicle headlights bounces back towards to the source--the vehicle and driver-- to make bicycles more visible on the road, keeping everyone safer.
In black, Fiks:Reflective Rim stripes match black rims almost seamlessly.
The colors of the first production run will be announced at the beginning of December. There will be at least 6 color options.
The final colors will be:
Black and white both reflect back white, but all others reflect their respective colors.
Since the profile of rims vary from model to model, there will be a few sizes available to accommodate most modern rims. You will select your size and color after the funding period ends.
Will they work on my bike?
If there is at least 6mm of surface between the braking surface of the rim and the edge where the spokes meet the rim, they will work. If you have disc brakes, drum brakes, roller brakes, or a single rear coaster brake they will also work. You cannot apply Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes to the braking surface of the rim.
I plan to the first run of productions myself out of my apartment. Though future production my not be handled personally, Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes will always be produced locally.
Limited Edition Tee Reward for Backers at the $65 LevelThe sketch below is a preliminary design that is subject to change, but it gives you an idea of what I'm shooting for. They will probably be the last thing to be produced of the project, but they can be shipped out separate from your set of Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes.
At the current time, I only plan on producing them to fit standard 700c road wheels (IS 622), 29" MTB/Hybrid wheels (ISO 622), and 26" MTB/Hybrid wheels (ISO 559).
Exclusive for Kickstarter backers, I will make custom sized sets for non-standard wheels--recumbent bikes, folding bikes, kids bikes, and non-standard wheel road bikes (650c) for an addition $5. So for a $30 contribution, you'll get One set of reflective rim stripes in a custom size up to 29" (enough for both sides of two wheels) + Reflective sticker set + Your name on the F:R website. (Add $10 for international shipping)
Due to the custom sizes, the expected arrival time is a little later.
*If I've already been in contact with you about a special size, this does not apply to you.
Black, white, yellow, orange, red, and purple will be the colors available to Kickstater backers. After the funding period has ending, purple will not be available.
There only requirement for Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes is that there is a semi-vertical surface of your rims that isn't used for braking.
Still unsure? Look at you bike upright. Does it have brakes that grab the metal hoop (the rim) that holds the tire? If it does, does the rim have any vertical space between where the brakes grab and the spokes go in? If there isn't, unfortunately Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes will not work on your bike.
Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes are made with a special semi-permanent adhesive that is strong and durable enough to withstand harsh conditions, but will remove easily and cleanly if you wish to remove them. However, they generally are not reusable.
No. They will be sized to fit most modern double walled aero-shaped rims without affecting the braking surface. They apply to the area of the rim between the braking surface and the spokes--on non-aero boxed rimmed wheels with disc brakes, Fiks:Reflective Rim Stripes will apply to the side of the wheel where the brake surface would be.
On most wheels on modern bikes, this area measures about 14-16mm across. Though final sizes have not been determined, the preliminary sizes are 6mm, 14mm, and a larger size for deep-v wheels.
