Three essays, five thousand words each, every three months. We want to build a better conversation with you.

Read more about Distance at our site.

Help fund the first issue of Distance, a new quarterly publication featuring long-form essays about design and technology. (Follow Distance on Twitter.) Your support will fund printing and shipping, paying our writers a respectable fee, licensing top-notch typefaces, and distributing digital bundles containing PDF, ePub, and Kindle editions.

There's a lot of writing about the hows and whats of design, but we wonder where the whys are. So much of the writing about why we design, and the ramifications of our work, lacks the research and analysis that is critical to any serious discourse. We want to change that.

We have a track record of making things that are internal exemplars of their principles, which are reserved, economical, and confident in their execution; and we are hellbent on applying the same jam econo beliefs to Distance. The final product is small, and will remain small, so that we can do an exceptional job on it and feel comfortable with what we put out the door.

Each issue will have a theme. The first issue is about beginnings. Here are the authors:

  • Benjamin Jackson is writing about new ways to critique user experiences in gaming.
  • Jon Whipple is writing about how to handle research in the design process.
  • Vitorio Miliano is writing about local professional communities.

It's going to be a very good issue, and we're confident you'll want to read it – hence the Kickstarter project.

The first issue will be ready to print by the time that this project ends. We've already received first drafts from everybody, and we're busy polishing their work to a shine. At the end of the project, you'll receive the digital bundle to hold you over until the books are printed and shipped. And because we don't think it's right to pay twice for the same content, when you preorder a book you'll always receive the digital bundle, too.

At the same time, we're already planning content for the second issue; do get in touch if you have a great idea kicking around, or want to talk anything through. But right now, we can't launch without your support.

We want to make something that fits your reading habits, looks good, and will make you proud to own. We want to encourage better writing, and we want to make the act of writing better, for everybody in our field. We think this is possible, we think Distance represents a good step in that direction, and we hope that you can join us.

Thanks for reading. We love you. You're very nice. Have a good day.

FAQ

  • That isn't a question, but you're probably wondering whether you'll receive all four issues next year, or an issue every three months. The answer is that you will receive an issue every three months, including shipments of the physical books where applicable. The fourth one should ship in March 2013, hence the delivery date.

  • We used to have a $500 reward to sponsor the first issue of Distance, but somebody bought up all of the available slots on the first day of the project, so we're not offering them on this project anymore. That said, we still have ample room for sponorships in future issues. If you'd like to sponsor the second, third, or fourth issue, you can select one as your backer reward at right. If you'd like to sponsor more than one issue at once, let me know over email and we can figure out a way to get that ball rolling. Read more about the process at http://distance.cc/sponsor/.

  • Your card won't be charged in any way until the end of the project - and even then, only when it's successful. We promise. Pinky swear.
