Nick & Noah are powerhouses of biomedical data science and a dynamic creative duo. Meeting in graduate school at Stanford, they became quick friends and collaborators. What began as a radio show (most popular college show on the planet!) quickly developed into a lasting intellectual relationship. Now they're professors at two of the world's most prestigious medical schools and are using their technical and scientific acumen to improve healthcare for the world. Their latest endeavor? A kid's book!

Who is Toshi?

There's a lot of confusion about the blockchain. We wrote a children's book to explain it! Your donation goes to support the illustration and production of the book. It's a great gift for your friends with kids and your friends without kids. And for every book you sponsor, another copy will be donated to a children's library or classroom so everyone gets the blockchain.

Great news! As of November 14th, the talented Cybil Sanzetenea has joined the Toshi team as our illustrator. Cybil is an incredible artist and early childhood educator. You can read about her amazing story

The story

Toshi and her friends love the activities that Teacher Tina plans at school. But when their teacher doesn’t show, it’s up to them to agree on a schedule for the day. The process the kids must go through to figure out how to work together without their teacher is analogous to the way a network of computers arrives at consensus on the blockchain without any of the computers being in charge.

The Illustrations

As of November 14th, Cybil Sanzetenea has joined the Toshi team as our illustrator. Cybil's has an incredible story that has taken her around the world and back.  Currently, she is a dual-language kindergarten teacher in Philadelphia and is excited to use her vibrant and artistic eye to bring Toshi to life. You can view her work and read more about her here.

What the funds are for

The Kickstarter funds will be used for printing ($3,000) and illustrator costs ($5,000).

The first of a series

Blockchain isn't just one advancement but a set of technologies that support the creation and maintenance of ad hoc networks. Other important features of blockchains are digital assets and cryptocurrencies, obviation of trust, and smart contracts. If the kickstarter is successful, we will tackle other aspects of the technology in three additional books!

More on Nick

@nicktatonetti, tatonettilab.org

Nick Tatonetti, Ph.D. is the Herbert Irving Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics  and the Director of Clinical Informatics at the Institute for Genomic Medicineat Columbia University. Dr. Tatonetti received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University. He then headed to Stanford where he completed his PhD in Biomedical Informatics. He focused on data driven detection, prediction and validation of drug-drug interactions during training and worked with some of the most well-recognized experts in the field of biomedical informatics.

Dr. Tatonetti then moved to Columbia University where he is today as an assistant professor of biomedical informatics with cross appointments in biomedical informatics, systems biology, and medicine and director of clinical informatics at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Tatonetti’s current research focus is developing clinical data mining algorithms for the discovery of novel adverse drug effects and interactions applied to the electronic health records. Despite being early in his career he has already discovered two novel drug-drug interactions between commonly used drugs. One of which, ceftriaxone and lansoprazole, results in a dangerous cardiac arrhythmia that was previously unknown.

He has already published more than 70 peer reviewed publications and his work has received a lot of press outside of academia, having been referenced in the New York Times, Chicago tribune and NPR. He is currently the PI on a NIH sponsored R01 looking at drug effect discovery through data mining.

More on Noah

@zimmeee, n1app.org

Noah Zimmerman, Ph.D, is an Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He currently serves as the director of the Health Data and Design Innovation Center and the Center for Biomedical Blockchain Research. His research is focused on improving decision-making in healthcare through the design and implementation of data-driven technologies. Currently he is working on a platform for single patient clinical trials, which you will be able to find in the App Store soon!

Previously, Noah co-founded a venture backed health-tech startup that built a search engine for electronic medical records. He also served as a data science lead at Pivotal Software, where he delivered predictive models for multi-billion dollar companies in healthcare and life sciences. During his final years in graduate school, he created and taught `d.science`, a course exploring the intersection of design and science at the Stanford d.school.

Noah received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Biomedical Informatics and a B.S. in Computer Science and Philosophy from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a proud father to two children under 3, which makes him chronically happy and sleep deprived.

Risks and challenges

While we have BEEN published quite a lot of times, this is our first time doing the publishing. The primary risk is finding an illustrator that is a great match for this story to help bring Toshi to life.
