About this project
Designing on the iPad
Plak is a page layout app for iPad. It will be simple, fast, and intuitive to use. Similar programs on a PC would be InDesign, Quark Xpress, or Pagemaker. Being on a tablet means working on ideas faster and more fluidly, and our ultimate goal is to create a tool so simple that it stays out of the way of the creative process. With most design software, the tools are cumbersome, slowing down the process. These tools require many hours of practice in order to become useful. So we created Plak, a sleek page layout app to accompany you wherever you bring your iPad.
The first version of our app will allow the designer to do the basics. We’re not trying to design an over burdened piece of software. We want a product which allows you to quickly sketch and develop ideas. We also want your input and feedback! This will helps us refine the product adding features that are necessary for sharing, printing, and getting feedback on the designs you create. We plan on creating templates and content so that designers can continue to learn, and small tasks like printing a business card can be expedited through online print services.
We Need You!
For our backer rewards we contacted David Carson, because he was one of the first designers to use the Apple Macintosh as a tool. He democratized design. He once said, “Graphic design will save the world right after rock and roll does.” We couldn’t agree more! David is creating a poster as one of our backer rewards! Our special edition poster will include his interpretation of our app.
Development has begun on the app! We designed the prototype and created technical specifications, working with the developers to refine ideas for implementation. User testing on the prototype is expected to occur in the first two weeks of February. Adjustments to the design will occur after this testing concludes. In the corporate world we run projects in exactly the same way! Very Lean… And, very, very fast! Development is expected to conclude in April.
Your funds will go entirely to completing development and producing backer rewards. If we get out of this simply creating an app that designers love, we will have succeeded! Rather than sketching tools, we need a design tool for the iPad that can accompany us everywhere. David’s comment on our project was simply “Cool!” We hope you feel the same way.
Risks and challenges
The risks include us not meeting our goal, in which case you lose nothing and do not gain a wonderful app! Should we meet our funding objectives, the risks would be limited to delays on launch times. Should costs run over-budget, we expect to cover them. Additional risks include Apple not accepting our app. This is highly unlikely given the nature of the product.
If these risks are not acceptable, but you are interested in having an app like Plak, please sign up on our mailing list (http://signup.plakapp.com)! Follow us on Twitter (http://twitter.com/Plakapp). Like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/plakapp).
Your interest is the most important aspect to this Kickstarter campaign! If we are not funded here, we have already talked to groups possibly interested in funding the project. Give us your feedback!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
