KILLSTORM is an intense action game for PC/Mac and touch screen devices with rich 3D environments that puts you in the pilot seat of a lethally-armed, highly agile attack helicopter.
Deep inside opposition territory, you are thrown into explosive missions and pitted against deadly enemies who will use everything in their arsenal to take you down. In order to survive you must pilot your helicopter and gun down targets to destroy your enemies. Our innovative, responsive and easy-to-use flight controls allow you to be a daredevil pilot and unleash your weapons with deadly accuracy. And that’s important because every kill counts. Each kill will charge your Dominator weapons, and you can use your Dominators to get the upper-hand on your enemies, or just to utterly decimate everything around you.
KILLSTORM is our love-letter to the classic action games of the 16-bit era. We wanted to play this game for a long time and no one else was making it - so we decided to build it ourselves! In this reimagining we are committed to keeping the classic gameplay, camera angle and action, but with modern controls and visuals. We want to make an updated classic for a new era of gaming, and we have worked hard to show some great assets for this campaign. We are coming to the Kickstarter community because we want your input; we want this to be a game that you want to play too.
This is not our first time making a high caliber video game, and we know we can achieve our goals. With professional backgrounds making AAA titles at Sony and Criterion, we are ideally skilled to craft KILLSTORM into an exciting and polished action game.

Forget what you know about twin stick gamepad, mouse-based and touch-screen control shooters. We've engineered KILLSTORM from the ground up to have the perfect modern control set that needs to be experienced. Using simple actions you will fly your gunship around the battlefield, aim at targets with easy enemy selection and let loose the dogs of war with auto lock-on mechanisms. Swing your helicopter around targets to out-maneuver them and gain breathtaking speed leaving enemies in your down draft. The built-in physics engine will provide excitement from the inertia of the helicopter all the way to the explosive chain reactions from the enemies you leave behind.
We have worked hard to get the feel of the control system just right; it’s immensely satisfying to fly and shoot. This is how an action shooter should be controlled.
We plan to bring KILLSTORM to both PC/Mac and touch screen devices (including Windows Phone, iOS and Android) with game play balanced to each control system. However if another platform has enough support from the community we will endeavor to create a version to support it.
Your guns and missiles will get you pretty far, but we've also equipped you with Dominators. These are special attacks that give you the upper-hand against opponents; they let you totally destroy a wave of enemies. Activate your Dominators by reaching a certain number of kills on the battlefield.
There are five different types of Dominators at your command:
The missions we have planned for KILLSTORM will be many and varied. You will never enter the battlefield without an objective to accomplish. We have already implemented systems for many missions including:
- Attacking enemy locations defended by static and mobile AI enemies
- Defending a location against enemy attacks
- Joining the battle and assisting friendly AI against enemy AI
- Destroying static enemy targets
- Escorting friendly AI across danger zones
- Gathering intel by securing an area and landing to collect it
- Following a path marked by beacons and destroying enemies along the way
- Killing all enemies inside a given area
Each of these systems is sensational on its own, but when we combine them in missions the action is exhilarating.
KILLSTORM will also include both environmental and time of day changes. For the gear heads among you, night vision mode will give you the upper hand in the darkness. And for those nautically-inclined pilots, battling ships at sea will test your skills.
You can improve the performance of the helicopters in the game. Each helicopter has stats in Speed, Acceleration, Armour, Gun Accuracy and Missile area of effect. We've kept things very simple - so the more you play, the more you improve. Want a faster helicopter? Go fly more! Want to increase your accuracy? Go shoot more enemies!
We are massive fans of an original retro game and we know you are too. We already have mission milestones and gameplay mapped out, but we are open to feedback. During this campaign we want to engage passionate gamers and fans to help mold KILLSTORM into a title that we all want to play. Have an idea for an insane mission? Tell us! With your funding we can hire more talent, create more content and refine every system. We didn’t choose to Kickstart this title to start development. Instead, we wanted to create a community of fans. We know we can deliver a good game, but we want to deliver a great game. Kickstarter will allow us to find people who want to play this game and help shape what the game becomes. By funding us you will help decide what goes in KILLSTORM.

Since development started we have made quite good progress, but our goal isn't just to make KILLSTORM. We want to make KILLSTORM the best – that’s the best game in its genre, the best game we’ve produced, the best game you’ve played. It’s a tall order, but we think with your help we can achieve this goal.
We have achieved several milestones already. We knew this game could not work without good controls, so our initial goal was to get the game controls feeling perfect. After a lot of interaction and experimentation, we are very happy with the results. Once satisfied we began to focus on all the systems that would make the missions possible, as well as the presentation and visual style we want the game to achieve. We knew the Kickstarter community would be a great medium for such an ambitious project and a fantastic way to receive the community feedback that we think is necessary to mold this title into something great. With this is mind we wanted to show off some polished screenshots as early as possible.
As a team this is the most ambitious game we have ever made. With your help we can create a community led game that puts a massive grin on your face when you play it. Like we said, this is not just a video game; it’s a modern love letter to a classic.
And just to clarify, by modern we don’t mean a freemium, pay-for-every-level game. We do not want to see this retro game abused with a freemium style pay plan that ruins the action. Sticking to a vintage model, once you own this game you will not be asked to pay for additional levels or necessary game-play functions. We are making a quality, premium game.
We would like our Kickstarter funds to be focused on the development of the game. With that in mind we have focused on digital rewards as we know the costs of producing and shipping physical rewards can be astronomical. All pledge tier digital downloads will be the users choice of PC or Mac.
KILLSTORM is being created by Nice Touch Games. The company was started in 2011 by Richard Bunn and David Green, two veteran AAA developers, who have worked at some of the biggest companies in the industry including EA, Criterion and Sony Computer Entertainment. Together they have published several indie games.
Richard (Creative) has been with the industry over 15 years and can list titles like Black and Burnout to his credit. A designer by trade he prides himself in the refined design detail of the titles he creates while driving David crazy with his incessant pursuit of a perfect look and feel.
David (Coder) has also been in the industry for the majority of his life, including a stint working on the real flight simulators used by fighter pilots today. An insomniac programmer he sits at a laptop for the best parts of his days and nights. For him sleep is merely a time to reflect on the next coding solution.
Since leaving the big studios we have prided ourselves on making games we want to make that we think the audience will appreciate. We’ve received the odd award along the way and it’s always a huge validation for an indie developer when someone acknowledges your hard work. When you are doing what you love, it’s an incredible feeling to have people love what you produce.
Risks and challenges
We are a two man team, and as we mentioned previously this our most ambitious project to date. We have lofty goals, and creating a game of this calibre takes time and effort. We are well aware of the risks and challenges associated with game development from code bugs to gameplay refinement. We have faced many challenges in our careers, and as a team we are well equipped to deal with them and continue development.
Our AAA and indie game experience means that we are veteran game developers which will help us to meet these lofty goals. As you can see from our demo and game trailer, all initial conceptual challenges have been conquered. We have mapped out a development timeline and already reached our initial milestones like figuring out the control system, physics system and visual style. But we know that is just the beginning. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot of polish that we want to put on the game.
