About this project
So what is The Power Racing Series?
In July 2009, a group of hackerspace members from PS: One in Chicago, IL stumbled across a children's Power Wheels in a state of disrepair. With a little bit of TLC and a good dose of tinkering, the machine was up and running again in no time, and became the cause for much amusement as we drove it around the block for days, and then weeks. Then we made it faster. Then we made it better. Then we made a few more. Thus, the 'Pow-Pow' Power Racing Series was born.
From that fateful day, Power Racing has taken a life of its own. Teams from across the country prep their modified cars for drag races, crazy road courses and menacing endurance runs designed to bring out the engineer in everyone. Teams are restricted to a $500 budget (aside from safety equipment, of course). The Power Racing Series has since run a circuit through Maker Faire Detroit and Kansas City Maker Faire and includes teams from Sector 67, i3 Detroit, Omni Corp Detroit, Milwaukee Makerspace, CCCKC, and of course, PS: One.
We've got big goals.
We want the public to see the wonders of hackerspaces, to witness them share tools and resources. We want to use these tiny cars to promote the idea that making is for everyone: child, parent, and grandparent, and hackerspaces are the welcoming environment to support it. Motors and controllers are just as accessible as the downhill speedster of yesteryear.
We are the Soapbox Derby of the 21st Century.
We need your help.
Due to the growing size of the series, we are in need of funds to continue spreading the epic proportions that are Power Racing Series. We want to launch more events, thus allowing for more participation from hackerspaces nationwide. We hope to continue to follow the Make circuit to more mini maker faires, and hopefully to Maker Faire San Mateo or Maker Faire New York in the upcoming season. We also would like to allocate funds to renting a more comprehensive timing system or financially supporting a community-built solution.
Your donations to this project go towards the following:
- renting or developing a timing and scoring system for the series
- introducing new races to the calendar
- affording more safety equipment for the drivers
- affording increased travel and lodging expenses for our racers
- inventing and build exciting new event obstacles
Join the party!
We want to make the 2012 season amazing, with the full support of the community. We've come together to offer some really fantastic gifts to our supporters. Our goal is to reach out to the public at large and advocate the wonders of making to everyone. We hope that this event will continue to show the public what hackerspaces are and what they are capable of doing. We at PPPRS believe in the maker movement and promoting DIY self-reliance. We show our dedication by racing kids cars.
Join us in bringing the Power Racing Series to your community!
