Exiled from a world he knew, Prospero created a New World. Part magical, part mechanical, this is our Steampunk Tempest.

HOW'S THE DAY?

We've only hours to go!

We're stunned.  And humbled.  And so excited to get going on this production.  Thanks to all of our backers, we're overshot our initial goal by over $1,000.

Now we're wondering ... what could we do with just a little more?  Well, for one thing, we could invest in better lights, replace some of the sound equipment that's gone dodgy (the perils of performing outdoors), or even explore some of the wonderful Steampunk community contacts we've made to employ the best of the best in gadget and gear fabrication.

Or maybe we'll just build that giant tea-serving, steam-powered robot we've been designing.  The one with the monocle ...

Anyway.  To our backers, thank you.  To our new visitors, welcome ... read on ... and if you dig what we're doing: Back This Project!

THE PROJECT

1893.

The World's Columbian Exposition opens in Chicago … Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9  premiers …  Prospero, the Duke of Milan, is deposed, exiled and set adrift at sea with his infant daughter, Miranda … and his books …

1909.

Ernest Shackleton's expedition discovers the South Pole … The Grand Isle Hurricane devastates Cuba … Alonso, the King of Naples, shipwrecks with his crew on the shore of a strange, uncharted island ...

And this is where our steampunk Tempest begins.

STEAMPUNK TEMPEST? REALLY?

Yes.  Really.

The last of Shakespeare's comedies, The Tempest is a wonderful tale of magic both real and imagined, of love as a voyage of discovery, of wild things that cannot be tamed.  It's big and bold and we can't wait to get started.

And yes, there will be gears. Among other things.

Our plan is to produce a well-considered steampunk take on the classic -- more than simply "putting a gear on it." As such, our budget will be bigger than usual.

Our Prospero will be an illusionist, the product of a late 19th Century that resembles history, but only just.  His magic will be borne of electricity and steam.  Exiled from Milan, his known world, our wizard will engineer a mechanical world of illusions.  At his side is Ariel, the embodiment of energy unbound, like electricity alive.  His Miranda is just as brilliant as her father, empowered further by hope and joy.  And sharing the island is Caliban, nature itself, doing Prospero's bidding only until he can find a newer, better, stronger master.

North Fulton Drama Club (NFDC for short) is a non-profit and while the proceeds from one show typically funds the next show … for Spring 2012, we're going to need a little help.

WHO ARE WE?

We're North Fulton Drama Club and we do Shakespeare, outdoors, for free.  We've been doing this for almost six years. We believe that theater can be accessible to any and all, so long as we stay true to the text.  To that end, we've taken the works of William Shakespeare to some very unexpected places.

We do big ideas with small budgets.  The works of William Shakespeare are incredibly malleable, and so long as we remain true to the text, there is nothing we cannot do and nowhere we cannot go.

We took Much Ado About Nothing to World War II, our Benedict a hero returning home to a reluctant Beatrice.  Our Macbeth drew the ire of a Marie LeVeau-esque Hecate deep in the Louisiana Delta.

In 2010, our Two Gentlemen of Verona faced-off in the Wild West.

Our most recent production, Henry IV, Part 1, was done in the spirit of Rebel Without A Cause and our audiences just loved it.

But for our Tempest, we're going to a time that has never been.

For months now, we've been posting images and inspirations to Pinterest.  The board, simply labeled "Tempest", contains images of newspaper headlines, abandoned gasworks, steam whistles, beautiful dresses, men in uniform aboard ironclads, lights in cages.  Something new is added every day.  We've always been wonderfully collaborative, but for the first time, the process is right out in the open.  Like a building under construction on a city-street, virtual passersby can look at the component parts and wonder just how all of these things will come together.  (Want to follow along?  Go ahead.)

We work best under a little pressure, with a level of temporal confinement.  For a punk-rock theatre company, we enjoy the rules we set for ourselves.  If we're going to place a play in 1945, then our costumes, our music, our props, our attitude should reflect 1945. We don't have an infinite budget, so we choose our priorities carefully.  We build sets that are as reusable as they are impressive.  We build costumes that look as good from the front row as they do from the back row.  And we populate those sets, fill those costumes, with actors and actresses that ask questions and put in the effort required to make the unreal real night after night.

And this is where you come in.

BE A BACKER!

By backing us on Kickstarter, you can ensure that NFDC's Tempest will be just as awesome as it deserves to be.

And to help you make up your mind, we've come up with a few premiums … including the hand-made dress our Miranda will wear and Prospero's magical staff of engineering wonder.

Should you decide to back us (and we really hope you do), we'll keep you informed of how the play is developing and building.  You'll get exclusive behind-the-scenes photos, and even videos, much like the Vlog Series we did for Two Gents back in 2010.

So take a look at the premiums to the right, scroll back up and check out a few videos, then click that nice green button over there and Back This Project.

North Fulton Drama Club is a non-profit community theatre in Roswell, Georgia.  As we are a registered 501(c)(3), so your contribution to this Kickstarter is tax-deductible.

Trouble reading details about the Premiums?  We've a page for that.
