Help this audition-free community orchestra present Mozart, Mahler, Beethoven, Handel and more in White Plains on Oct 21!
Why Support This Project?
Do you love live music? Do you want to help bring more art, beauty and happiness to the lives of people from all walks of life? Do you want this to happen in your own backyard? Then this is the perfect project for you to support!
The New Westchester Symphony Orchestra ("NewWSO," www.newsymphony.org), an audition-free ensemble of local amateur musicians, needs your help in order to hold its Fall 2012 performance at the ArtsWestchester building in downtown White Plains, NY on October 21 at 3:00pm. The results of this performance will be all of the above, and more!
Who is the NewWSO?
Most members of the NewWSO consider themselves “hobbyist” musicians. The vast majority of members have occupations in fields other than music and never dreamed they would play great symphonic works such as Mozart’s the familiar first movement of 40th Symphony, the breathtaking second movement from Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, Handel's second Water Music Suite, and other well-known chamber and vocal pieces.
Well, the NewWSO is a place where dreams do come true. We will present all of the above works and more on October 21, 2012. Our live performances prove that anybody who loves playing music can play "serious" music while having lots of fun. Audiences are continually amazed and inspired by our dedication, happiness, and, of course, how good we sound. Yes, that's us on the video soundtrack!
Why do we need your help?
Our musicians are all volunteers - in fact, our musicians pay a membership fee to play these great works of art and don't get paid a penny to perform. As you can see in our video, NewWSO brings its collective love of music to the local community by performing for audiences at venues such as public libraries, retirement homes, and rehabilitation centers. Inspiring happiness through music is an overlooked but very necessary community service that we provide to a diverse cross-section of Westchester County residents.
While we don't have to rent most community performances spaces, we usually don't charge admission, either. In order to be able to rent the beautiful ArtsWestchester performance space and bring a great program to an enthusiastic audience at the low price of only $10/ticket, we need your help!
Where Exactly Will Your Money Go?
Our goal of $3500 will go directly towards expenses associated with this concert, including: rental of the performance space at ArtsWestchester ($1100), two months' rent at our weekly rehearsal space ($1000), printing of 150 concert programs ($300), advertising costs ($500), and extra personnel costs necessary for a smoothly-run event ($100). We also need to create and distribute the nifty rewards we are offering ($500 or more, depending on how many are ordered). Every penny will be put to good use.
ArtsWestchester is housed in a historic bank building centrally located in downtown White Plains next to the bustling City Center shopping center. It's one of the few concert venues in Westchester that is accessible without a car! One can literally walk right into our 3:00pm performance after lunch and/or shopping. The orchestra will be set up on the floor of the beautiful ground-floor gallery space, and the audience will be seated “in the round” for a thrilling, up-close experience.
You might be wondering how we paid for our first concert at ArtsWestchester...
On March 18, 2012, only three short months after being founded, NewWSO took a big risk and gave its “debut concert” at the very same venue. We packed the house with familiar faces as well as folks who walked in off the street. We raised funds from amongst our own membership in order to pay for that concert.
For this upcoming public concert we are asking for public support to keep ticket prices low and keep the music alive for our members and for our audiences.
A word about tax-deductible donations:
Our application with the IRS is currently “pending,” which means we may get approved as soon as next month or as late as next year. Without tax-exempt status we are not eligible to apply for corporate sponsorship or grants, which means performances for the public are exceedingly difficult to finance.
That is why we're appealing to YOU - our friends, family, fans, and strangers who believe in our cause - to donate as much or as little as you can. Kickstarter is an amazing tool to help us raise a little bit from a lot of people. Every little bit helps, it truly does.
And, if our tax-exempt status is granted in 2012, your donation will be tax-deductible. We are grateful that Congresswoman Nita Lowey's office is helping us expedite the process. Fingers crossed!
Here's what our members want you to know about the importance of contributing to our project:
“We are a united group dedicated to improving our collective musicianship and providing quality music to our audiences.”
“[NewWSO] improves the lives of the people who participate in it as well as those we play for.”
“If you love the arts and want to promote them as good way to spend time as opposed to sports or watching TV, making a donation to the NewWSO is a good use of your charity.”
“How often can you support an organization that provides enjoyment to so many different kinds of people, promotes the arts, builds community and provides another great reason to live in Westchester?”
“[Your contribution] supports the type of first-rate activity that encourages friendship, artistic expression and a sense of community in a rapidly fragmenting and isolating world.”
And If We Exceed Our Funding Goal?
If we exceed our funding goal, extra funds will be put to good use towards expenses associated with future concerts. An exciting, upcoming example is our Messiah Sing-Along with full orchestral accompaniment, to take place on November 30, 2012, 7:00pm at the Music Conservatory of Westchester.
There is always music to be played, and people will always need music. NewWSO exists to fill that need in Westchester County, now and in the future.
A note on how Kickstarter works and how to be a Backer:
To make a pledge to help bring our Fall 2012 Concert to life, click the green "Back This Project" button at the top right of this page, next to the video. You will be asked to enter your pledge amount (minimum pledge of $1) and select an optional reward. You will then be prompted to complete the purchase through Amazon. If our project is successfully funded, your card will be charged when we reach the funding deadline. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need help!
If you have questions about the Fall Concert or general questions about New Westchester Symphony Orchestra, email email@example.com, call 914-260-1811, visit our website www.newsymphony.org, or visit our Facebook page for more information about this project and about the NewWSO. Hope to see you at our Fall concert, and THANK YOU!
Yes! Login to your Kickstarter account and go to this Kickstarter page. The green "Back This Project" button is now a blue "Manage Your Pledge" button. Click that, and you can change the amount, the reward, or even cancel it entirely (although that would be sad, boo hoo).
I want to donate to the Kickstarter campaign, but I don't want to give my credit card information. Do you accept checks?
Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you really want to give a check. We may be able to work something out and still have it count towards this campaign.
We should hopefully know in a month or two what the status is. We have contacted the local congresswoman's office, who has contacted the IRS representative in NYS, who is looking into our application status. If our status is granted for this year, you will have the option of providing your address so you can receive the necessary letter from us to claim tax-deductibility.
