About this project
This Kickstarter campaign will help bring the first workshop production of Billy Butler's new musical, Missing: Wynter to the Players' Ring stage in Portsmouth, NH. Billed as a modern cautionary tale somewhere between Cervantes and Brothers Grimm; about a young girl who disappears without a trace, her father’s struggle to find her, and ultimately, himself. The story explores topics not often heard of in musicals. It's a heart wrenching story of love, hope, and living.
We've projected a budget of a little over $5000 and are only looking to raise about half, $2500. There are only 70 seats at the Players' Ring Theatre and they take 35% of gross ticket sales, so even if every seat is sold it won't cover costs. Your pledge will help us make sure we have costume, sets, props, paint, glue, and most importantly everyone will be paid for their time, ('paid' being a relative word.)
Risks and challenges
Producing a new musical is risky from the get-go. The biggest risk being the possibility of low ticket sales because it is an unknown entity. A significant percentage of the box office goes to the venue so one of the biggest challenges is balancing donations and ticket sales to cover all expenses and pay artists for their time.
Funding from this Kickstarter campaign will help us with upfront costs; set and costume materials, light and sound equipment, props, and scripts. Copying the scripts alone costs $100 or more. If we fail, then designers, builders, arrangers, etc. won't have the funding to buy materials and goods, let alone be paid for their work. I've worked my share of projects with little to no money, and it's always an interesting challenge, but it takes time and energy away from what is important and that is the development of the show. Ultimately, this will be the first step in bringing Missing: Wynter to a wider audience and raising awareness of missing and exploited children.
New Theatre Works brought Gay Bride of Frankenstein to the Ring in 2008. It has gone on to have tremendous success regionally as well as in NYC and beyond. We have the experience, talent, and know-how to make this production a success and hope you will support us with a donation to our Kickstarter campaign!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
