About this project

Big Important Update - June 7: We've reached our goal!!! Thank you generous, amazing supporters! We'd like to announce that half of anything we make above and beyond our printing and shipping costs will go toward presenting performances at our 20th Anniversary party, August 20th, in Portland, and the remaining half will go toward printing our next magazine.

Thank you for your support!

Plazm #30: our 20th Anniversary Issue

We've got another big, beautiful magazine ready to go to press. Issue #30 features David Lynch, Bruce Sterling, and many other excellent artists and writers. We just need donations to help print it. We even got a grant, because high quality printing on truly good paper is very expensive these days and we like to keep our cover price affordable enough for regular people.

Unfortunately, our printer was bought out by another company that can't honor our original bid, so we're scrambling to raise the extra funds, extra fast. Help make it happen! You'll win fabulous rewards, and if you request it, we'll be happy to provide a receipt for your taxes—Plazm is now published by a nonprofit, New Oregon Arts & Letters.

Celebrate two decades of Plazm with us. Donate today.

What is Plazm magazine?

Founded by Portland artists in 1991, Plazm is an award-winning magazine of design, art, music, literature, and culture, beautifully printed on quality paper. Plazm publishes new and unknown talent alongside established folks like Iggy Pop and Yoko Ono. The magazine is known for taking risks, including artistically unusual work, innovative writing, and political art.

How will you use my donation?

Your money will go directly to paying the print bill and related shipping costs; all our contributors and editors donate all of their time and talent for free.

Things people say about us:

“Plazm is an expertly crafted blend of brain food, eye candy, smart design and sexy typography." — PORT

“Those who like their magazines slick and formulaic are hereby given a last chance to change their minds.” —WIRED

" 'Magazine' doesn't quite cover it. Not even 'art magazine'. Maybe 'magazine as art' is closer to the mark..." —The OREGONIAN

"In an era when more and more media are controlled by fewer and fewer outlets, small press and independent media allow outsider voices to be heard...Find a copy of Plazm and expand your perceptions." —The FEMINIST REVIEW

"The best American magazine since Interview.” —NIEUWS (Netherlands)

What will I get if I donate to Plazm magazine?

Donate $1000 and the author/screenwriter Jon Raymond—who happens to be one of our editors—will name a character after you in his next book or movie. Nearly all donors will receive a digital preview of the magazine before it comes out in print, and an invitation to a VIP event (in addition to our August 20 launch party; past launches have featured musicians Dead Moon & Glass Candy, artist Storm Tharp, dancer Tahni Holt, filmmaker Vanessa Renwick, performers Sissyboy, and many others).

Other rewards range from a copy of the new magazine to original artworks by noted designer Ed Fella and celebrated Northwest painter Michael Brophy, with limited edition T-shirts and other fun stuff in between. High-end contributions will earn a dinner event and show, curated by Plazm for the winner and ten of her friends.

Best of all, you will sleep well at night knowing that you've done your part to keep print alive!

Details and images for some prizes appear below...NOTE: Additional shipping charges may apply if you're not in Portland. We'll get in touch with you if that's the case for your prize.

What's in this 20th Anniversary Issue we're funding?

Over 150 pages including:

- art by David Lynch, Wangechi Mutu, and Raymond Pettibon

- interviews with Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney), Bruce Sterling, Erik Davis, Kevin Kelly, Sherry Turkle, and Douglas Rushkoff

- photography by Bruce Wolf, Christina Seely, and Lori Waselchuk

- graphic design by Ed Fella, Stephen Oh, and Zeloot

- fiction & poetry by Arthur Bradford, Lisa Wells, and Kevin Sampsell

- pull-out poster of artwork by Dan Attoe

If print costs so much, why not just publish electronically?

Plazm magazine is found on coffee tables and on book shelves with the art books and the limited edition, silkscreened album covers. It isn't something you look at for thirty seconds and then get distracted by a cat video on YouTube. It presents art, and according to some critics, it *is* art.

Being able to download a cheap publication for $1.99 does not and cannot replace the unique, tactile sensation of print and the ability to reproduce amazing art beautifully. A backlit, monitor-colored screen JPG of a painting doesn't do the work justice. Of course, we do have a website, blog, Twitter feed, etcetera, and will soon be launching a new site at plazm.org. But the magazine remains at the core of our work.
