Help our nonprofit organization open a recording studio to provide free recording for artists and music production classes for students
Nov 14, 2013 - New Reward Added!
Did you miss Jason Butler's Reddit AMA? Or maybe you didn't get your question answered? Fear not, for the first 20 backers at our brand new reward you will get a personal thank you phone call from none other than Jason Butler of letlive. Back us and share the ll.ove. Let's do this!
We're building a new kind of recording studio for a new kind of music industry!
New Noise Group is a 501(c)(3)(pending) nonprofit organization looking to provide artists with free professional studio recording, mixing, and mastering services. By taking money out of the equation, the artist's creative process is uninhibited to create their true vision of their record. In addition, we'll open up this creative environment to students for hands-on learning as well as dedicated classes to learn everything about the recording process from pre-production all the way to mastering.
New Noise & The Studio
We need your support to open our studio!
Your Kickstarter pledge will go towards securing a studio space, studio computers, audio interfaces, i/o interfaces, preamps, outboard gear, sound reinforcement, cables, headphones, stands, and many other items that make up the equipment necessary for a proper recording studio.
Once our studio is open, we will record artists for free. Simple as that. All studio sessions at New Noise Group will be open for students to sign up and sit in to learn from real-world experiences about the record making process.
The studio itself will be located in the Los Angeles area and we are currently looking into the best possible space for the best possible price. Outside of Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, and surrounding northern Los Angeles areas, there really aren't any major recording studio facilities, and that's where we want our studio to be! Our main goal for location of the studio is to be as centrally located within Los Angeles as possible in order to serve as much of the community as possible. The map below outlines the area where we're currently searching.
Timing & Grand Opening
Our Kickstarter project is scheduled to close on November 28th. Thanksgiving.
We want to be able to give the most meaningful thanks of our lives this year and we want to give that thanks to our backers! From the close of our Kickstarter project we will spend the next months planning, building, and making our studio the best it can be. Our target date for the studio opening is February 1st, 2014 with our grand opening party taking place on or around that date.
Artists & Organic Music
By taking money out of the equation, the artist's creative process is uninhibited to create their true vision of their record.
Up and coming artists who don't have the support of a label typically pay out-of-pocket to record their music. And those that do have support from a label must pay back the label through record sales before they see any money. Recording with New Noise Group will allow artists to have an album to release without any debt, personal or owed to a label in recoupable costs.
We want to benefit artists that truly need the services that we are offering. For the most part the artists that New Noise Group will be recording will be on a first-come first-serve basis (artists can sign-up right now at www.newnoisegroup.org) as long as the artist meets our eligibility criteria. In addition to demonstrating financial need, some of the criteria we have put in place include the artist having an album's worth of material to record (LPs or EPs), being able to provide us with information of all band members to be recorded, and the artist agreeing to allow students to sit-in on their sessions as part of our educational programs.
Students & Music Education
In addition, we'll open up this creative environment to students for hands-on learning as well as dedicated classes to learn everything about the recording process from pre-production all the way to mastering.
Learning the recording process can be very tricky. There are tons of tutorials available online via YouTube, Lynda, and more, but there's only so much you can gain from viewing and so much more to gain from actually doing.
Our educational programs will begin with allowing students to sign up to sit in on our actual recording sessions (students can sign up right now at www.newnoisegroup.org). During these sessions, students will essentially serve as assistants in the studio and be provided with nurturing guidance every step of the way. All processes, methods, techniques, and actions will be explained as the session progresses. This immersive methodology allows the concepts to be learned and more importantly, retained.
As we grow (we're shooting for 2 - 3 months after our studio opens), our educational programs will expand to include dedicated classes along with our sit-in sessions. This will give us an opportunity to dive deeper into single concepts and completely break down crucial knowledge. We're in the process of finalizing and fine-tuning our dedicated curriculum, but some of the classes we've outlined so far include:
- Introduction to Music Production
- Recording for the Home Studio
- Pro Tools 101
- Logic 101
- Reason 101
- Microphones & Microphone Techniques
- Critical Listening & Ear Training
- Mixing Techniques
- Mastering Techniques

Share The New Noise: In addition to sharing New Noise on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, we encourage you to literally share new noise with a friend! We'll send you a New Noise branded headphone splitter so that you can listen to your favorite new noise with someone special.
We Need New Noise T-Shirt: Help spread the word in the real world! Our T-Shirts are premium American Apparel white t-shirts available in sizes from youth small to extra large.
The current configuration that we've budgeted for our studio is somewhat tentative, but what we can say for sure is that for our main funding goal the studio will be primarily an "in-the-box" solution with the ability to expand. And that's where our stretch goals come in:
- $50,000 The Outfit: We will be able to fully outfit our studio with instruments including a piano, guitars, amps, drums, keyboards, and more.
- $75,000 The Board: In addition to The Outfit, we'll be able to add onto our in-the-box solution by breaking out a full sound board (model and configuration TBD).
- $100,000 Studio B: In addition to The Outfit and The Board, we'll expand to a full second studio room. Our Studio A will be the outfitted studio with full sound board, and Studio B will be the in-the-box second studio.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
As far as we can tell, there is only 1 risk with this project, and 1 challenge:
The studio space. Some spaces may require some work before they're ready to be used as a recording studio, and others may be ready to go, but more expensive. We'll be sure to do our due diligence to find the most efficient studio we can so that our budgeting can remain in tact, we won't just settle. There are several resources and contacts that we have in the community that can help facilitate finding a suitable studio space.
Continued funding for the studio to remain open. We have put in place several revenue streams including public support through donations on our site, local and federal grants, and corporate donations. In addition, We intend to offer all recordings that we make available at a suggested donation through our website and will continue our funding efforts perpetually. We are committed and able to make sure that our studio opens, remains open, and provides new noise for artists, students, and the community.
We've come up with a cost spreadsheet that we're still working on and finalizing, but if you would like a peak at some of the gear that is currently on our list please contact us and we're more than happy to share! Once we have finalized our equipment list we will be updating the Kickstarter page with all of the details!
We're not simply relying on $25k from Kickstarter to be the end all of our studio finances. We've outlined the following revenue streams to make this sustainable:
A) The educational programs we are offering are paid programs and we are going to price them aggressively to make it as accessible as possible (somewhere between $20 and $50 per student per session).
B) Full details are still being worked out, but the artists will own the recordings 100%. New Noise Group will retain a digital distribution license to be able to offer the recordings through our site for a suggested donation of $10 per album.
C) We are pursuing as many grants as we are possibly eligible for.
D) We are pursuing corporate / company donations in the form of cash and / or studio gear from all major players in the music industry (record labels, equipment manufacturers, instrument manufacturers, etc.)
E) As a nonprofit we will be fundraising constantly, one of the main initiatives right now being the Kickstarter itself. Since we have a network of artists on board with us it allows us to set up benefit concerts, giveaways, contests, etc.
F) And lastly, public support. Plain and simple donations through our website and directly at the studio.
We've crunched some numbers and the math does add up. It's a ton of work, but we're doing it and if we can have a successful Kickstarter campaign it will make it much easier. If our Kickstarter fails we will simply spend more time fundraising and have a delayed grand opening, but regardless we are going to give this a shot!
