As was always the plan when I set out to make the The Power Principle, the first eight issues is now headed for trade paperback, this time in full color!
The first arc of The Power Principle was made possible thanks to 189 Kickstarting friends. Digital Issues 1-4 are available for purchase at Graphic.ly or directly, DRM-free at The Power Principle blogspot, along with the print single issues.
Here are production samples from the latest Issue 4, in Black & White:
The remaining four scripts are complete after having been drafted by me, and then edited by series editor Adam Besenyodi, author of Deus Ex Comica and contributing writer for TwoMorrows Publications and The Collected Comics Library.
Now that I've produced 4 issues, I know better what to expect as far as a realistic timetable. Currently, I am drawing issue #5, which will be published in April. Issue #6 is due in June, issue #7 in August, and issue #8 in October. I will be collecting them into the trade paperback in October and, after a month printing turnaround time, have them ready to ship in November.
While the single issues were all produced in grayscale, the trade paperback will be published in FULL COLOR! Tilting the odds in favor of this timeline, I'm already coloring the issues now.
The trade will also contain the 6-page prequel story called "Captain Planet" published only once before in the 11 O'Clock podcast community anthology "Low Concept 2" by King Bone Press.
This Kickstarter is to fund the printing of your trade paperback. You pledge, and I use the funds to print and mail your book to you, anywhere you are in the world.
This campaign is less complex than the last, but we all know how many superhero comic books there are out there, and I still need your support. I think The Power Principle is different, as do many of the readers. In his THOOMcast review, Tim Terrell praised the book by proclaiming "This is how you do characterization!" And, Andrew J. Sanford, a Marvel Noise podcast contributor, was so moved by the story he wrote the Valhalla Comics Group offices a letter praising "...I find myself returning again and again to the first 2 issues ... it feels like we are peering in on a complete world with fully formed, distinct characters... The introductions are well paced and the story takes pleasantly unexpected turns. Each issue is a full and complete chapter but I love the cliffhangers at the end of each one. You have me completely (and happily) wondering where this story will take us."
The goal for this new Kickstarter is only $3000, which will allow me, right after the completion of issue #8 in October, to have the funds available to print a minimum of 100 books at a lower cost than, say, 50 books, and makes it possible to afford shipping this weightier product from the printer and then back out to you.
Raising funds in excess of the goal creates the opportunity to advertise the ongoing single-issue series through merchandising and commercial placement, gaining even more momentum for the trade when it becomes available for wider distribution in December. You might already know that when it comes to commercial distribution, the books need to be already printed and available to ship. A new successful Kickstarter will make that possible. With this campaign, I’m asking you to help me continue telling my ongoing story.
Thanks for your consideration!
Risks and challenges
The risk is that I am the creator-artist of this project. That's about it. I have to stay healthy and strong to complete, color, and collect the last four issues into the trade. Based on what I have learned over the course of creating, publishing, and distributing the first four issues of this arc, I know I can do that.
Whether this ever sees wider distribution beyond the Kickstarter campaign or not, you get what you pledge for here. The funds allow me to do that.
Things like inviting other artists to create posters that I can give to you to say “thanks” as well as to help market the book are the kinds of stretch goals I have in mind should this Kickstarter start to exceed its target goal.
That's about it for now. Wish me luck, and keep an eye out for the Updates as we move along!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
