Shahrzad Darafsheh is a 36 year old artist battling cancer in Tehran. This deeply-layered book, in a limited edition of 300, is a window into her life and experience.
We first discovered Shahrzad's work in 2017, and were intrigued by her sensitive storytelling and enigmatic subject matter. As we started to talk, it became clear that she had been struggling with cancer for some time, and was about to undergo surgery, followed by a course of chemotherapy.
This book operates on several levels; as a chronicle of her journey through a sickness, an object made of various materials of different opacities evoking the fragility of skin, obscuring and revealing life's scars. As an experiment in storytelling - when read in Farsi, from right to left, the result is very different from that which an English reader will experience: it is a bilingual project that provides a view into life in a country which many of us have no knowledge of, or visibility into.
Half–Light is one of the most challenging projects we have undertaken to date. We hope you will support it by pre-ordering what is sure to be a remarkable object, with a remarkable story.
Risks and challenges
Printing any book is a labor of love and requires skill, experience, and patience. Every printing process encounters some challenge - whether they be paper availability, technical difficulties, or customs delays. Through our previous projects we've built strong relationships with some of Europe's finest printers and are confident that we will be able to work through any problems to deliver a beautiful result.
We are not certain that Shahrzad herself will be able to receive copies of the book itself in an uncensored form; the political aspect of this project is a learning process for us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
