The March Hare Project

$292

HEY! We're Running An AWESOME POLL Right now! We'll use the results to make a very scientific chart about the relative speeds of things to a rabbit!

And then go tell your friends to take it, and then come back and back the project to be notified with the results and to see the final piece of art!

**Ahem** Back to the project info:

We're going to make some stuff and you're going to help!

I'm an artist and author (or a pair of artists and authors) in Olympia, WA, and we're running a project to design and produce a poster print, a book, and who knows what else. The poster print will be 11"x17", and will feature a series of rabbits made as individual pieces of art that are then mixed and matched together in Photoshop to create the final. The book will be an evolving project that's created over the course of the campaign.

The way you can help is by answering the various polls and questions that will be sent out during the course of this campaign (and after). What should our stretch goals be? What should we draw next? How many cuss words can we find to rhyme with Rabbit?

But the campaign goal is only a buck!?!

Yup. We're going to make this stuff either way. The goal of the Kickstarter isn't funding (well, it is), but to find an audience to help us create this project together.

Critical Mass

The way a project like this is most interesting for everybody, is when it has a larger group of participants. This is tricky, especially for those of us who can't figure out what the hell a twitter is or why the facebook keeps trying to steal my identity. And I KNOW that people are really loathe to pass on Kickstarter links to their own buddies, since it seems so much like shilling. So how do we get enough people to back to make it interesting?

Bang for the Buck

The solution we're going to be trying here, is to pack as much bang for the buck as we can in for our backers. This will be in the form of interactivity and updates. By backing the project for even as little as a dollar, you'll receive regular updates through Kickstarter during the life of the campaign. Our hope is that backers will share the project with their friends and family to entice them to join. After all, it's only a dollar.

From our point of view, the plan isn't to collect as many singles as we can fit into a pillowcase, so much as wanting to grow the number of participants. Some of them will opt to get the physical goods, as well as the digital goods that all backers receive, and that's awesome. We really appreciate it, and will put out quality items, the same as we always do. But the heart of the project is the creation, and you can buy into that for only a buck.

MarchHare.NeverKnows.com

Since clicking through all of the updates we post on Kickstarter is something of a hassle (back the project for a dollar and have them emailed to you as they happen!!!), we setup a blog over at MarchHare.NeverKnows.com, where we've been posting updates. Check it out!

 REWARDS!!!

Stickers: We've got a lot of stickers floating around that we've made over the years. We'll probably be producing a few more through the campaign, since they're fun. Back for a fiver and at the end of the campaign, some of them will be stuck in an envelope and mailed to you.

Poster Print: An 11"x17" print, suitable for framing, will be produced. There will actually be a couple of them designed and then one of them produced based on a backer vote. The first poster will be pieced together from different rabbit drawings (which are also available individually as rewards).

Check out the final poster, at marchhare.neverknows.com!

The other poster print will be a motley collection of animals selected by all of our backers, very similar to this other poster that we previously designed using internet polls:

If we hit certain arbitrary stretch goals, then we'll produce more poster prints beyond just the one. Wouldn't that be neat?

Book: I'm not sure what the book will look like just yet. Maybe I'll get inspired by a witty poll entry or a backer comment, and produce a novella about a rodeo clown who ends up fighting crime on the moon. Maybe it'll be an alphabet book. Perhaps a book of poetry. These are all possibilities. I once produced a picture book in public during an arts festival based entirely on online poll results. For realsies. It's called The Smallest Possible Murder. So maybe we'll do that again. I also once produced a book from over a hundred animal drawings, called Animal Parade, which is much more of an Art Book. The options are wide open.

Stencil Paintings: To start with, as a special limited reward, I did these eight 10"x10" paintings, using canvas, house paint, a cardboard stencil from a foodstuffs box, and some paint pens. These are both editioned AND one of a kind, as you can see. These are available now, but other similar stuff may appear if people are interested, or if I decide to make some more. They're fun. They're the closest I can get to printmaking in my garage right now. If you want to see a different type of original art show up as a rewards: leave comments or email me. I'm open to most anything that I can pull off.

Pretty cool, right? Yeah, well, I think you're stupid, too, so there.

Stretch Goals!

So what happens if we make more than a dollar? Good question!

50+ backers: Bonus print! At this point, we'll produce both poster prints: the one of the animals, and the rabbit one. If you back a level with a poster print, you'll get both!

50,000% of the goal: Add another reward tier! At this point, we'll have enough to make something entirely new, which backers can vote on. Will you want to add March Hare coffee mugs as a reward you can choose? T-shirts? Enamel pins? Something I'm not thinking of? We'll cross this bridge when we get here, then find a way to let you add it on at the end of the campaign.

We'll add more goals if we need to/can. I'm thinking another bonus print somewhere, and another backer choice one somewhere else.

So, that's basically the idea.

For only a buck, what do you have to lose, right? You'll get to be part of shaping a unique art and literature project. You'll get to watch pieces of art coming together through your recommendations and answers. You'll get to see a Pacific Northwest Artist go completely mad before your eyes as they struggle to draw hundreds of bunnies while attempting to rhyme words with Nuralagus.

Chupacabra!!!
Chupacabra!!!

Thank you for reading this far and so forth!

Risks and challenges

Aside from Acts Of God™, the most likely problem is that regular life intercedes with manic creative life, and eats into the amount of time that can be put into this project. I've made books, I've made art, I've made posters, so I don't really have any concern about getting these projects done, but on occasion proceedings can slow down to a crawl. It happens. Though not very often.

The thing that's most terrifying is shipping stuff. I'm trying to build in good padding for shipping costs, but it feels like it's always a crap-shoot.
