From the desk of Dr. Ego:
"My given name is Dr. Eugene Goodman, but many of my clients prefer the freedom that comes from concealing oneself behind a mask and pseudonym. There is an unparalleled openness that comes when two parties engage each other from behind a veil of secrecy. Like a chat room, or one of those online role playing games -- you can be exactly who you want to be, which is more often than not, exactly who you really are. That’s why I conduct my sessions in a fashion my clients prefer: from behind a mask of my own, as “Doctor Ego, super-psychotherapist”. And you would be surprised by the kinds of things I’m witness to because of that mask.
SUPER-EGO is a light-hearted recounting of my career as told in a somewhat fashionable -- and frankly appropriate -- "comic book style" of sequential art. It contains a peek at just a bit of my day to day interaction with the superhuman community. Recorded and illustrated by a wonderfully talented artist by the name of CAIO OLIVEIRA, and colorized by the immensely talented LUCAS MARANGON, this adventurous volume offers a glimpse inside the world of abnormal para-human behavior, the kind I treat on a daily basis.
These records were first serialized to the public in single-pages posted weekly on the popular website SEQUENTIALINK.COM, but now Caio seeks to bring the complete collection to you in a prestigious hardcover collection.
(And, well… just between you and me, a project such as this will go a long way towards curing Caio’s own preoccupation with drawing monkeys in provocative swimwear.)
I told Caio he should submit this exercise to a suitable printer for mass duplication. A healthy and creative expression of ideas that for once doesn’t involve fatty foods.
The resulting volume, as he described it to me, would be quite lush: 104 pages of full color artwork, printed on a toothy woodfree paper stock at a slightly oversized 7.25 x 11.25" trim. Frankly, I don't completely know what all of that means, and he tells me those specs could change, but only for the better. I have to admire his positive attitude.
Currently, 88 of the 92 pages of story content have been completed as inked, black-and-white line art, with 26 of those pages already rendered in full color. Caio now seeks the funding necessary to finish colorization, complete re-lettering, and printing. He asked if I would loan him the meager $6,000 to accomplish this, but I told him that it will mean so much more if he achieves it himself. He smiled (or at least bared his teeth in what I will assume was a smile) and left with a clear purpose in his (somewhat menacing) stride. That’s the sort of tenacity and spirit we aim for in our sessions.
I have, however, without his knowledge, solicited contributions from several fellow “four-color journalists”, each of whom has selflessly offered to supplement his book with pinups and bonus artwork, should he achieve his goal. These pieces, like a well-orchestrated intervention, will likely come as quite a surprise. And we will have security on hand when that time comes.
We all need help occasionally. There’s no shame in admitting that. What’s shameful is pretending to be capable of more than you truly are. Pride goeth before the fall. If you can’t lift a minivan over your head, don’t say you can. And for God’s sake, don’t try. You can do serious spinal damage to yourself.
In this instance, Caio needs help printing this book. While he could, conceivably, hand-draw thousands of original copies of the material, then hand-bind those original pages into thousands of unique, one-of-a-kind hand-made hardcover books, that would take literally years. Yes, it would provide a much healthier preoccupation than squirrel-trapping and squirrel-dress-making, but in the end, it’s probably not the best use of his time. Time that could be spent making full-sized dresses for orphans.
So he is humbly asking for help – YOUR help – to fund the cost of printing. Trust me, it is a small price to pay to insure he stays safely focused on something non-destructive.
In addition to the ubiquitous “Thanks Online”, we are prepared to incentivize your contribution to Caio’s rehabilitation with a number of exciting rewards:
Colorful digital wallpapers formatted for your various computers and devices – laptops, desktops, mobile phones, tablets, Playboxes, X-stations… if we’ve left a device off the list, let us know and we’ll put a team of engineers on the task.
A digital PDF version of the finished story, delivered to the email address of your choice.
A physical copy of the completed hardcover book itself. Note that this edition will contain some extra supplementary materials not included in the PDF. Please also note the image below does not represent the final cover, which will ultimately be AMAZING.
A fashionable T-shirt, something you can wear over cargo shorts or under a smart blazer. A quality garment made by quality hands of undisclosed nationality.
For a lucky number of supporters, Caio will create an original drawing of your favorite hero, RPG character, alter-ego, or favorite animal dressed in your choice of attire.
You can own an original page of artwork from the book. The hand-drawn, ink-on-honest-to-God-paper pages are one-of-a-kind, and limited, of course, so the selection will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those of you who are not color-blind, Caio and colorist Lucas Marangon will create an original water-colored commission of the subject of your choice. This will be an original, hand-drawn and hand-painted piece of art suitable for framing. So choose your subject matter carefully.
True philanthropists will have an opportunity to examine their own narcissistic fantasy by creating a hero or even appearing in the finished book itself, starring in a brand new prologue sequence that will be generated specifically for this complete edition. Plus you will receive the original page of art commemorating your moment of immortality.
UPDATE: We've just added a personalized tip-in signature card to the Tiers (see sidebar), but if you'd like a signature added, you can adjust your pledge and request it "a la carte" for an additional $10. This will be included gratis in all tiers above $50!!!
UPDATE 2: We will also include an original sketch in both of the $500 tiers!
T-shirts and extra books can also be added a la carte for an additional $20 each:
While I repeatedly warn Caio of the dangers that come from expectation, it is prudent to be prepared for success as equally as failure. To that end, we have discussed a suitable ladder of “stretch goals”, should the initial objective be met.
If we reach $10k, I’ve taken the liberty of conditionally securing an original piece of cover art by Eisner Award-winning artist GLENN FABRY. Yes, he's legendary, we know. (UPDATE: Okay, Glenn's on board already, so its no longer really a stretch goal...)
Beyond that, for each additional $2500 above our original target goal, we will add 5 more pinup dossiers by popular artists to the book. We have agreements in place with over a dozen talented artists so far, with more joining the intervention as I write this.
Beyond that, if you help us raise as much as $18k, we will produce a complete radio dramatization with full score, soundFX, and dare we promise, a celebrity cast. Yes, the term “celebrity” may sound subjective, but we do live in Hollywood, and should we reach this goal, we’ll reveal the cast and you’ll have your justification for any doubt. And if we hit $25k, we will include a CD of that dramatization in every copy of the hardcover book. This will be an amazing cast production, super-professional. You want examples? Check out our Vimeo channels.
Risks and challenges
What in life worth doing is without risk? Risk fends off the mundane, hones our emotional dexterity, strengthens the heart, and fuels the stuff of dreams. If life were certain, we'd be extinct from laziness by now. That said, you want to know that your donation is sound. Understandable.
Caio's project is being executed by Neurobellum Productions, a creative studio with literally decades of experience producing and publishing precisely this sort of material for major companies and popular brands. With so many years of experience producing award-winning graphic novels and multimillion-dollar video games, a project like this is pretty much "by the book" (pun intended). The only challenge remaining is completing the coloring and additional back-matter in a timely fashion, but your support will make that a non-issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
