"when i was an ice skater" is an album ive worked on for a decade.
in 2002 i first began collecting songs that didnt fit with my current projects... songs i couldnt quite finish or knew i lacked the life experience to complete properly. years passed and they kept accumulating. in 2005-06 i wrote a bundle of new songs, many of which felt at home among the ones id been collecting. for a while i imagined them all together as one enormous album but eventually chose to record and release some as "eyes & eyes & eyes ago." it took another 6 years to fully complete the writing and recording of its sister album "when i was an ice skater."
it was recorded in maine, new hampshire, massachusetts, connecticut, new york, kentucky, north carolina and georgia. many songs began on a portable nagra reel to reel recorder and were later transferred to an 8 track for additional overdubs. some in my friend wills room on his four track and others with a tandberg 2 track. all ended up on a laptop for mixing. catastrophe was narrowly avoided in the summer of 2012 when that laptop began sputtering and dying one afternoon and i nervously began ferrying files onto another computer as the ship was sinking. the album just barely escaped with its life!
i would like to see "when i was an ice skater" released on vinyl but lack the means in the foreseeable future. my solution is to use kickstarter to raise the funds. if it generates the money needed for this project to conclude as desired, then hurrah! if not, then now is not the time for it to exist!
i have created a small selection of rewards because i prefer to keep the focus on the purpose of the project itself, rather than contriving a host of additional burdensome materials. distractions that needlessly inflate the monetary goal and require the time, energy and resources that ought to be devoted to making the "ice skater" LP the best it can possibly be.
the finished physical object will be a 150 gram 2LP set in a single pocket recycled jacket. i know some will be disappointed that it isnt a fancy, elaborate gatefold contraption but i've intentionally chosen an economic approach to make this a more doable project without sacrificing the quality of the vinyl. i'm broke and you're probably broke too, so if we all want to continue to put nice new things in the world we should lower our standards on luxury items like vinyl records a little bit! let me put it this way: it means the goal can be about 1,000 dollars less and i can ask for 20 dollars instead of 30 per copy. not too shabby, eh?
for folks with a little more to spare in your pocketbook there will be a "deluxe" version available. and an option involving a tee shirt. other rewards include significantly discounted audio mastering services for music or film projects! sorry, no bobble heads, frisbees, picture discs, or popcorn balls!

Risks and challenges
i think things will go smoothly. at this point everything is recorded. i just need to re-mix and re-master some of the tracks and finish assembling the artwork. i have experience interacting with manufacturers from when "eyes ago" was pressed in 2009. i had to be in contact with the vinyl plant and the printers that made the fancy booklets. in spite of being a lunatic artist person, im also kindof secretly becoming a competent adult. and i have some experienced friends around that can help me with anything i find tricky.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
