Neo New York is a creative, six-day workshop series for students at the acclaimed Cooper Union in the East Village. NEO promotes merit-based, free education by providing grants to 30 deserving, international participants to attend creative workshops led by some of New York City's most talented and contemporary artists and art instructors, including Paul Sahre, Maja Cule, K-HOLE, Jake Yuzna, and Alexandra Gorcyznski & Marisa Olson. The week of hands-on, interdisciplinary symposia culminates in an exhibition of work produced by participants, open to the public on the final day. Day five will also include a public symposium given by six of the presenters (OKFocus, Romke Hoogwaerts, Carla Gannis, Cammisa Buerhaus, The Rodina and Istvan Kantor). You may reserve a ticket here. Participants will be selected based on their application and portfolio. We are seeking student artists from a variety of practices.
Students from around the world will immerse themselves in a creative storm with other passionate thinkers as they collaborate in the studio, participate in meaningful presentations by expert presenters, share their portfolios, and finally exhibit their work from the week.
All funds will directly provide stipends for our workshop leaders, supplies for the workshops (printers, scanners, cameras, paper, and ink), and a guard to watch the facility (required by The Cooper Union). Your generous financial support will create a structure whereby student artists can experiment, learn, and produce. Students’ artistic projects will include, but are not limited to, motion graphics, mixed media, performance, sculpture, videography, photography, and print making.
Neo New York is a not for profit, student organized event. Inspired by our own experiences at Cooper Union, a merit-based institution, we have developed Neo New York to extend this opportunity to other deserving student artists. If you believe that new artists must be nurtured and supported, please donate now. This event can ONLY come to fruition with your assistance. Let's make this happen!
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges of this project come from building from the ground up. We are students looking to make sure this event occurs effortlessly. We want to ensure an open flow of communication amongst the workshop leaders, the administrators at Cooper Union, the participants, the lecturers and the public.
Having sufficient funds to support our hard work is essential in making this project happen. Not for us, but for the sake of the workshop. If we do not raise enough funding we still plan to hold the workshop, but in doing so, we compromise the stipend we wish to pay our workshop leaders and speakers.
*We strongly believe educators and teachers deserve a respectable wage and an acute attention to their needs. We have immense respect for the professionals we are inviting and want to create a productive environment for the visiting students.*
Other modes of education are essential in a time where student debt is crippling young adults. Having a vision for education is one thing, bringing it to life is another. The Neo New York Workshop is an effort to creatively prove another way is possible.
Help us make this happen!
