 NEO   NORTE EXHIBITION

1.-   CONTEXT:
  - Latin American Culture does not has enough visibility in the London's   creative scene.
  - Supremacy of Eurocentric curatorial practices are questioned in   Post-Colonial era.
  - Latinos Creative Society of the University of the Arts London showcased Neo   Norte (‘New North’) at Fundación Cultural de Providencia, Santiago,   Chile in 2018.
  - Neo Norte had over 1.900 attendants, offline and online publications in   Chile, the UK and Italy, near 220 publications in social media, 4.300 likes   and 9.250 plays of published videos.
  - Neo Norte challenged the norm by encouraging a dialogue between ‘Western’,   ‘ethnic’ and ‘folkloric’ expressions in the same space.
  - Exposed Arts Projects will be showcasing an Empowerments series in 2019 to   reflect upon the notions of power.

  2.- FINDING:
Latin American community does not have enough visibility in London’s cultural scene.   Therefore, ‘Neo Norte’ gathers Latin American creatives, to give them the   possibility of enhancing and exchanging their cultural richness   through art volunteering.

3.- NEO NORTE SECOND CHAPTER IN EXPOSED ARTS PROJECTS
  - Instead of having ideas always travelling north to south (from Europe or   North America to Latin America), this time the idea travels from the   southernmost country of the world to the north.
  - Project will be developed through collective research where artists will be   asked to respond to the main topic through a series of workshops that will   culminate in the exhibition.

4.- NEO NORTE CONCEPT: Who determines the North?
  SUBTOPICS:
  - Migrations as creative destructions: Cultural richness of Latin   American melting pot.
  - Natural v/s Digital: How do traditional crafts survive in the digital era?   Intersection between Pre-Columbian crafts and modern technology.
  - Cultural syncretism: Contrast between Pre-Columbian and Western   heritage.
  - Shamanism: Pre-Columbian approach to nature and connection to the earth vs.   western rituals.

7.- PROJECT OUTCOME:

       - ‘Neo Norte’ will not only empower Latin American minorities and     reframe pejorative stereotypes but will also open debate on the cultural sector     about Eurocentric curatorial practices.

     - Emergent artists support.
    - This project is just the beginning of an ongoing series of collaborations     with the Latin American community in London. Collaborations that involve     future exchanges between the UK and Latin America.
    - One of the objectives of organising previous workshops and a diverse     public events agenda, is not only focusing on ‘exhibiting’ something, but     giving spaces to network and build up a stronger community.
    - On all public events we will offer the possibility to the audience to     subscribe to a mailing list to keep them updated of future events.
    - We’ve been thinking of publishing content related to the outcome of the     project in newsletters, blogs and press media from the UK and Latin America     as for example: UK Express News, Cantos de América, University of the Arts     London, Royal College of Arts, Goldsmiths University of London, Slade     School of Fine Art, Latin American House, Latin American Embassies, Arte al     Límite, A-N, Latino Life, Art Rabbit, Social Media among others.
    - Lastly, near the 20% of our budget is for the catalogue and close to the     15% to make a professional video to show the outcome of the project. Once     projects are finished, a professional video and catalogue will always     remain and help as a ‘key’ portfolio element for all volunteer involved on     the project to apply for jobs, future projects, funding and give continuity     to ‘Neo Norte’ maybe in cultural institutions in other cities in     the UK or even other countries.

Risks and challenges

As emergent artists, always the most challenging part of any project is to fundraise enough money to cover the basic costs of the show.
After finishing installing things, the second challenge is always to attract the right audience.
