My name is Jamie and I’m the designer behind Neo. I’m a 4th year industrial design student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and this is one of a couple campaigns I’ll be launching throughout the academic year for my Entrepreneurial Product Design class. This class is taught by the one and only Ted Burdett of Strand Design, the mastermind behind the Kickstarter for Forneau Oven.
Neo is a neodymium magnet, hand sewn in between two pieces of leather. It uses the highest grade of Neodymium, N52. The leather protects tools and surfaces from being scratched. Are you a maker with precious tools you don’t want scratched? Have tools that don’t fit in standard tool holders? Short on space? With Neo, all you need is somewhere to put your magnet: a metal fridge, bracket, cabinet, etc.
Neo was designed as a solution to the issues makers have storing tools that are either irregularly shaped, have a delicate finish, or are important to keep sharp. Neo uses the highest grade of neodymium magnets that exist, which results in a high weight capacity.
By using scrap leather from other leather goods companies, Neo doesn't contribute to the harmful byproducts that result from the tanning process. I always strive to do design with sustainability as a core value.
Neo will be offered in 2 limited edition colors: light blue and pink goat leather. *Update: these 2 limited edition colors have sold out! The black, brown, burgundy leather Neo sets are still available in the $25 pledge reward.*
A set will have all 4 of the same leather color. Any friends, family, or classmates that backed rewards will be refunded the $4 shipping in cash upon delivery.
With the support of fellow makers, we can bring this project to life.

I’m a curious creative with a conscious. Sustainability excites me, like a child in a candy store. I avoid plastics and either thrift my clothes or buy them from sustainable and ethical manufacturers. I dumpster dive on the side, restoring and reselling things that were doomed for trash.
I cook and consume far more food than most. The building I live in has a bakery with great conchas, which has been a dream for me. Things that make me smile include bikes, art, salvaged things, old things, food, animals, biking, traveling, and quality presence.
Risks and challenges
In the design world, there are always challenges. In the case of Neo, the only problem I can foresee is the possibility for delays in production. Each Neo magnet is hand cut, stitched, and finished. Neo is a strong rare-earth magnet, and it can’t be machine sewed because it can damage sewing machines. In the case of any delays, I will work diligently to resolve the timeliness and keep backers updated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
