In the fictional world of "Back to the Future Part II" masterfully created by Director Robert Zemekis, Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, and Screenwriter/Producer/Co-Creator Bob Gale, Marty McFly was on his journey forward in time to the year 2015 where hover boards were as common as skateboards and bicycles. Now that we are approaching that infamous date in reality, everyone is asking, "where are our hover boards?!" Well, we are here to answer those cries! Don't be a Biff; hear us out!
In honor of the 30th anniversary of the movie, NeoLev Technologies, LLC is thrilled to announce we can celebrate one of the most magical BTTF moments with a little token. Not only are these boards' uncanny resemblance to the BTTF hover boards as exciting as George McFly upper-cutting Biff’s sleazy grin, but the science and technology engineered by the minds of NeoLev Technologies, LLC is 30 years ahead of its time. Yes, they are very cool.
This special Back to the Future edition of the NeoLev Mini Hover Boards is designed to hover in place or move forward and backward in a near-frictionless manner along a base. This track is purposefully designed to be about twice the width of the board and provide superior lateral stability. NeoLev technology uses diamagnetic levitation which is one method for magnetic suspension without the use of control devices, electromagnets, moving parts or materials requiring sub-freezing temperatures. Seeing it levitate up close for the first time is remarkable.

Eric founded NeoLev Technologies, LLC in 2013. He has a BS degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University and a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University. He has 25 years of experience in engineering analysis and testing, project engineering and technical lead capacities in solid and liquid rocket programs, spacecraft and satellite integration, ground transport vehicles, fighter jet testing, signal processing and instrumentation. Outside of work, he designed and oversaw construction of several residential homes in the mountains of Colorado. He is an instrument-rated private pilot, runner, hiker, and accomplished mountain climber. With a keen interest in history, travel, reading, science, and technical innovation, he has taken on the challenge of creating NeoLev products, and experiments with all sorts of high tech gadgets. Dave is responsible for Modeling and Drafting NeoLev® prototypes and production units using SolidWorks. Dave has also developed our hardware integration and vendor/supplier databases. He has a BSBIS degree (also an AA in Electro-Mechanical Drafting) and 28 years of experience in Engineering Mechanical Design and Drafting. He specializes in Fixture and Jig design. His diverse career has included work from the Ore Mining field, government DOD projects, military transport design, semiconductor wafer loading equipment and mountain bike design. His most recent 17 years has been exclusively involved in medical applications. He specialized in Artificial Graft and Stent design and their manufacturing and processing equipment. The last 9+ years have been directed toward Knee and Shoulder repair anchor design manufacturing and processing. He presently holds 9 issued US Patents in the medical field. He is an avid mountain biker in the Phoenix area. With his extensive knowledge in the design field and maintaining product lines in manufacturing, we have asked Dave to take on the role of Director of Manufacturing and Quality. Janice Johnson has a BA in English and a master’s degree in Education, both from National University, Sacramento. She received her journalism training at Walter Cronkite School of Mass Communication at ASU through the Reynolds Institute and is a fellow and teaching consultant through the National Writing Project. When she's not managing communications for NeoLev Technologies, Janice is a full-time educator at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, Calif., teaching English and Mass Communications. What Will We Do With The Money?
Once we honor our commitment to send the donor's their Rewards, the goal is to present the innovation to toy companies and catalogs so we can manufacture these in large quantities. We need funds to devote to more research and development, producing more suitable prototypes, creating a strategic marketing strategy, seeking legal counsel, completing the US patent, pursuing foreign patents and extending public awareness. We will also need to build resources and marketing tools on our website so that we have a solid hub for feedback. Finally, we need a special place to house updates about ongoing research and development for an increased board size using a different technology. The Back to the Future miniature levitation products have the potential to be the coolest toy in a decade, but it won't be possible without YOUR help and support.
The R&D in proving the technology has been successful. By developing a variety of prototypes through these efforts, the manufacturing process and vendors have been determined with quotes calculated for Rewards manufacturing. During this fundraising campaign, sufficient materials have already been ordered for Reward levels to serve as final pathfinders to identify specific problems in dimensions, tolerances, supply chain, etc. For example, the magnets used for the levitation surfaces are unique arc magnets which are not readily available, so they have been precision drafted requiring long lead times from order to manufacture/shipment. Shipping containers for each Rewards Level has been evaluated along with method of delivery. All manufacturing for the pathfinder Pre-Rewards are assembled in our southern California facility.
Rewards ManufacturingImmediately upon completion and funding of the campaign, vendors and suppliers (magnets, acrylic plates, hardware, decals, shipping materials) will be notified of the exact quantities needed and materials will be ordered. In parallel, levitation boards will be produced. We are approaching the Rewards manufacturing strategy based on potential levels of scale up to $100,000 in funding. All assembly can be done in California as described above in the Pre-Reward Manufacturing section. This scale potentially involves the assembly of up to several thousand Rewards, so additional hourly personnel will be hired to assemble, pack and ship the Rewards if we surpass the $100,000 mark.
After Rewards have been sent to the donors, efforts will focus on lessons learned in manufacturing and supply chain management depending on the scale of the production. The ultimate goal is to present the technology to be licensed and/or have the patent purchased by a large company for mass production. Therefore, more research and development of advanced prototypes are required. Depending on the scale of donations, these prototypes will be designed and tested in our warehouse if very large scale production is warranted. We fully expect there to be a large demand for these , so manufacturing likely will continue in the same manner as during the Rewards manufacturing process.
First, we will focus on producing the rewards to ship out to our faithful supporters…you, the donors! We are looking forward to this challenge as it involves a full manufacturing procedure of the hover boards by which we’ll discover ways to improve the board and optimize the process along the way. You are helping us to make elite technology and production quality. Our goal is to have most of the rewards in transit to their new owners within three (3) months of meeting our funding goal, which just happens to fall on October 2015. Specially-ordered magnets and board material need time to be manufactured from scratch. Meanwhile, marketing and legal strategies will be formulated and a further social media push will be done in attempts to get the attention of larger companies and catalogs. Completion and approval of the US patent will also be done.
Risks and challenges
Every project has its setbacks and we believe we’ve addressed the majority of technical issues by producing and testing a myriad of prototypes. This involved working closely with vendors and manufacturers in all aspects of design and procurement. Precision has been applied by incorporating Computer Aided Design while finite element analysis optimized the levitation height and stability of the NeoLev products. By drafting a patent we’ve performed extensive due diligence to remain confident about the commercial and legal viability.
A most critical issue is safety. Anytime high grade magnets are distributed to the public, their use must be scrutinized. Recently there have been mishaps with children swallowing several small magnets causing internal damage. We’ve designed this system with those dangers in mind by mechanically bolting the levitation surface magnets together and making their geometry such they cannot be ingested. In addition the Rewards and patent application offer various safety designs so the magnet surface is physically shielded from flat surfaces thus forcing the strongest parts of the magnetic field to be far from pacemakers, credit cards and metal objects. A prominent warning label is included with each levitation surface and on the box sleeves. The pyrolytic graphite material is carbon-based and similar to pencil lead. Each of these materials are commercially available and able to ship domestically and internationally from the US.
The agreement with Universal is for distribution of the Back to the Future products in the United States only. We are considering obtaining foreign licensing. In the meantime, we offer non-Back to the Future Rewards to highlight the cool levitation technology.
All of your support and funding will be crucial in finding solutions to these risks and challenges. Our dream is to boost NeoLev into full force, so we need time to focus all of our energy on development. As we all know, time is money. That's where you come in!
